SO(10) SUSY GUT Model with a U(1) x Z_2 x Z_2 Flavor Symmetry

An SO(10) SUSY GUT model which leads to maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and the LMA solar neutrino solution, developed in collaboration with S.M. Barr, is briefly described. Since the model is quantitatively predictive, it can be used to assess the need for a neutrino factory, as shown in collaboration with S. Geer.

GUT Model Predictions for Neutrino Oscillation Parameters Compatible with the Large Mixing Angle Solar Solution

Within the framework of an SO(10) GUT model that can accommodate both the atmospheric and the LMA solar neutrino mixing solutions, we present explicit predictions for the neutrino oscillation parameters \sin^2 2θ_{13}, \sin^2 2θ_{12}, \sin^2 2θ_{23}, and Δm^2_{21}. Precise measurements of \sin^2 2θ_{12} and Δm^2_{21} by KamLAND can be used to precisely determine the GUT model parameters. We find that the model can then be tested at Neutrino Superbeams and Neutrino Factories with precision neutrino oscillation measurements of \sin^2 2θ_{23}, \sin^2 2θ_{13}, and the leptonic CP phase δ_{CP}.

GUT Implications from Neutrino Mass

An overview is given of the experimental neutrino mixing results and types of neutrino models proposed, with special attention to the general features of various GUT models involving intra-family symmetries and horizontal flavor symmetries. Many of the features are then illustrated by a specific SO(10) SUSY GUT model formulated by S.M. Barr and the author which can explain all four types of solar neutrino mixing solutions by various choices of the right-handed Majorana mass matrix. The quantitative nature of the model's large mixing angle solution is used to compare the reaches of a neutrino super beam and a neutrino factory for determining the small U_{e3} mixing matrix element.

Neutrino Oscillation Scenarios and GUT Model Predictions

The present experimental situation regarding neutrino oscillations is first summarized, followed by an overview of selected grand unified models which have been proposed to explain the various scenarios with three active neutrinos and their right-handed counterparts. Special attention is given to the general features of the models and their ability to favor some scenarios over others.

Overview of Grand Unified Models and Their Predictions for Neutrino Oscillations

A brief overview of Grand Unified Models is presented with some attention paid to their predictions for neutrino oscillations. Given the well-known features of the two non-unified standard models, SM and MSSM, a listing of the features of classes of unified models is given, where a GUT flavor symmetry and/or family symmetry are introduced to reduce the number of model parameters. Some general remarks are then made concerning the type of predictions that follow for the neutrino masses and mixings.

Explicit SO(10) Supersymmetric Grand Unified Model

A complete set of Higgs and matter superfields is introduced with well-defined SO(10) properties and U(1) \times Z_2 \times Z_2 family charges from which the Higgs and Yukawa superpotentials are constructed. The Higgs fields solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem, while the structures of the four Dirac fermion mass matrices obtained involve just six effective Yukawa operators. The right-handed Majorana matrix, M_R, arises from one Higgs field coupling to several pairs of superheavy conjugate neutrino singlets. In terms of 10 input parameters to the mass matrices, the model accurately yields the 20 masses and mixings of the lightest quarks and leptons, as well as the masses of the 3 heavy right-handed neutrinos. The bimaximal atmospheric and solar neutrino vacuum solutions are favored in this simplest version with a moderate hierarchy in M_R. The large mixing angle MSW solution is obtainable, on the other hand, with a considerably larger hierarchy in M_R which is also necessary to obtain baryogenesis through the leptogenesis mechanism.

Explicit SO(10) Supersymmetric Grand Unified Model for the Higgs and Yukawa Sectors

A complete set of fermion and Higgs superfields is introduced with well-defined SO(10) properties and U(1) x Z_2 x Z_2 family charges from which the Higgs and Yukawa superpotentials are constructed. The structures derived for the four Dirac fermion and right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices coincide with those previously obtained from an effective operator approach. Ten mass matrix input parameters accurately yield the twenty masses and mixings of the quarks and leptons with the bimaximal atmospheric and solar neutrino vacuum solutions favored in this simplest version.

Construction of a Minimal Higgs SO(10) SUSY GUT Model

A full account is given of the procedure used by the authors to construct an SO(10) supersymmetric grand unified model of the fermion mass matrices. Various features of the model which gives remarkably accurate results for the quark and lepton masses and mixings were presented earlier in separate publications. The construction of the matrices is first discussed in the framework of effective operators, from which one naturally obtains the maximal ν_μ- ν_τmixing, while the small angle or maximal mixing solutions for the solar neutrinos depend upon the nature of the Majorana matrix. A set of Higgs and fermion superfields is then introduced from which the Higgs and Yukawa superpotentials uniquely give the structure of the mass matrices previously obtained. The right-handed Majorana matrix arises from one Higgs field coupling to several pairs of superheavy conjugate neutrino singlets. For the simple version considered, 10 input parameters accurately yield the 20 masses and mixings of the quarks and leptons, and the 3 masses of the right-handed neutrinos.

Bimaximal Mixing in an SO(10) Minimal Higgs Model

An SO(10) SUSY GUT model was previously presented based on a minimal set of Higgs fields. The quark and lepton mass matrices derived fitted the data extremely well and led to large mixing of muon- and tau-neutrinos in agreement with the atmospheric neutrino data and to the small-angle MSW solution for the solar neutrinos. Here we show how a slight modification leading to a non-zero up quark mass can result in bimaximal mixing for the atmospheric and solar neutrinos. The "just-so" vacuum solution is slightly favored over the large-angle MSW solution on the basis of the hierarchy required for the right-handed Majorana matrix and the more nearly-maximal mixing angles obtained.

Predicting quark and lepton masses and mixings

A model is presented that fits the quark and lepton masses and mixings wherein five dimensionless parameters and a phase account for fifteen dimensionless observables. Among these are the Wolfenstein parameters $ρ$ and $η$, the $ν_e-ν_μ$ and $ν_e-ν_τ$ mixing angles which are predicted to be small and comparable while the $ν_μ-ν_τ$ mixing angle is predicted to be large. The model is based on supersymmetric SO(10) with the form of the mass matrices motivated by simplicity at the level of grand unification.

Implications of a Minimal SO(10) Higgs Structure

A minimal SO(10) Higgs structure involving a single adjoint field along with spinors, vectors and singlets has been shown to break the SO(10) gauge symmetry to the standard model while stabilizing the F-flat directions and solving the doublet-triplet splitting problem naturally. With this minimal set of Higgs fields, we show how to construct quark and lepton mass matrices which explain well the many features of the observed spectrum, including the Georgi-Jarlskog mass relations. A large mixing of the muon- and tau-neutrinos results naturally as observed in the atmospheric neutrino data. A particular model relying on a family symmetry has been constructed which realizes the desired mass matrices.

A Minimality Condition and Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations

A structure is proposed for the mass matrices of the quarks and leptons that arises in a natural way from the assumption that the breaking of SO(10) gauge symmetry is achieved by the smallest possible set of vacuum expectation values. This structure explains well many features of the observed spectrum of quarks and leptons. It reproduces the Georgi-Jarlskog mass relations and postdicts the charm quark mass in reasonable agreement with data. It also predicts a large mixing angle between ν_μ and ν_τ, as suggested by atmospheric neutrino data. The mixing angles of the electron neutrino are predicted to be small.

Fermion masses in SO(10) with a single adjoint Higgs field

It has recently been shown how to break SO(10) down to the Standard Model in a realistic way with only one adjoint Higgs. The expectation value of this adjoint must point in the B-L direction. This has consequences for the possible form of the quark and lepton mass matrices. These consequences are explored in this paper, and it is found that one is naturally led to consider a particular form for the masses of the heavier generations. This form implies typically that there should be large (nearly maximal) mixing of the mu- and tau-neutrinos. An explanation that does not involve large tan beta also emerges for the fact that b and tau are light compared to the top quark.

A Non-Minimal SO(10) x U(1)_F SUSY - GUT Model Obtained from a Bottom-Up Approach

Many of the ingredients are explored which are needed to develop a super- symmetric SO(10) x U(1)_F grand unified model based on the Yukawa structure of a model previously constructed in collaboration with S. Nandi to explain the quark and lepton masses and mixings in a particular neutrino scenario. The U(1)_F family symmetry can be made anomaly-free with the introduction of one conjugate pair of SO(10)-singlet neutrinos with the same U(1)_F charge. Due to a plethora of conjugate pairs of supermultiplets, the model develops a Landau singularity within a factor of 1.5 above the GUT scale. With the imposition of a Z_2 discrete symmetry and under certain conditions, all higgsino triplets can be made superheavy while just one pair of higgsino doublets remains light and results in mass matrix textures previously obtained from the bottom-up approach. Diametrically opposite splitting of the first and third family scalar quark and lepton masses away from the second family ones results from the nonuniversal D-term contributions.

Construction of an SO(10) x U(1)_F Model of the Yukawa Interactions

We construct a supersymmetric $SO(10) \times U(1)_F$ model of the Yukawa interactions at the grand unification scale from knowledge of a phenomenological set of mass matrices obtained by a previous bottom-up approach. The $U(1)_F$ family symmetry determines the textures for the Majorana and generic Dirac mass matrices, while the $SO(10)$ symmetry relates each particular element of the up, down, neutrino and charged lepton Dirac matrices. The dominant second and third family contributions in the Dirac sector are renormalizable, while the remaining contributions to the Dirac mass matrices are of higher order, restricted by the $U(1)_F$ family symmetry to a small set of tree diagrams, and mainly complex-symmetric. The tree diagrams for the Majorana mass matrix are all non-renormalizable and of progressively higher-order, leading to a nearly geometrical structure. Pairs of ${\bf 1, 45, 10}$ and ${\bf 126}$ Higgs representations enter with those having large vacuum expectation values breaking the symmetry down to $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ near the grand unification scale. In terms of 12 parameters expressed as the Yukawa couplings times vacuum expectation values for the Higgs representations employed, a realistic set of 15 quark and lepton masses (including those for the 3 heavy righthanded Majorana neutrinos) and 8 mixing parameters emerges for the neutrino scenario involving the non-adiabatic conversion of solar neutrinos and the depletion of atmospheric muon-neutrinos through oscillations into tau-neutrinos.

An Explicit SO(10) x U(1)_F Model of the Yukawa Interactions

We construct an explicit $SO(10) \times U(1)_F$ model of the Yukawa interactions by using as a guide previous phenomenological results obtained from a bottom-up approach to quark and lepton mass matrices. The global $U(1)_F$ family symmetry group sets the textures for the Majorana and generic Dirac mass matrices by restricting the type and number of Higgs diagrams which can contribute to each matrix element, while the $SO(10)$ group relates each particular element of the up, down, neutrino and charged lepton Dirac matrices. The Yukawa couplings and vacuum expectation values associated with pairs of {\bf 1,~45, 10,} and {\bf 126} Higgs representations successfully correlate all the quark and lepton masses and mixings in the scenario incorporating the nonadiabatic solar neutrino and atmospheric neutrino depletion effects.

Comparison of SO(10)-Symmetric Fermion Mass Matrices with and without Degenerate Neutrinos

It has been recently suggested by others that one can simultaneously explain the depletions of solar electron-neutrinos and atmospheric muon-neutrinos along with a 7 eV neutrino component of mixed dark matter by postulating the existence of nearly-degenerate 2 eV neutrinos with the correct mixing parameters. We study this claim in the framework of a simple SO(10)-symmetric model constructed from the low scale data using a bottom-up procedure recently advanced by the authors and compare the results with and without degenerate neutrinos.

A New Bottom-Up Approach for the Construction of Fermion Mass Matrices

We describe a new technique which enables one to construct an SO(10)-symmetric fermion mass matrix model at the supersymmetric grand unification scale directly from the fermion mass and mixing data at the low energy scale. Applications to two different neutrino mass and mixing scenarios are given.
