New Temperatures of Diffuse Interstellar Gas: Thermally Unstable Gas

We present new Arecibo 21-cm line measurements of the temperatures of interstellar gas. Our temperatures for the Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) are significantly lower than previous single-dish results and in very good accord with theoretical models. For warm gas at T > 500 K, we find a significant fraction of gas (>47%) to lie in the thermally unstable region 500 ---> 5000 K; moreover, about 60% of all the neutral atomic gas has T > 500 K. Large amounts of thermally unstable gas are not allowed in theoretical models of the global interstellar medium.

The McKee/Ostriker Model: Paradigm?

We summarize the current observational status of the interstellar medium in terms of the McKee/Ostriker model. We find both agreement and disagreement---hence the title of the paper. Some of the newest observations differ from older ones, which underscores the need for both more and better data

Physical Conditions, Grain Temperatures, and Enhanced Very Small Grains in the Barnard Loop

We derive the radio spectral index of the Barnard Loop (BL) from large-scale radio surveys at four frequencies and find it to be a thermal source. We use the radio data together with H-alpha data to determine the electron temperature in BL, the lambda-Ori HII region, and a high-latitude filament; all of these regions are somewhat cooler than typical HII regions. We perform least squares fits of the DIRBE diffuse IR intensities to the 21-cm line and radio continuum intensities. After the resolution of a ``geometrical conundrum'', this allows us to derive the electron density n_e; we find n_e ~ 2.0 cm^{-3} and pressure (P/k) ~ 24000 cm^{-3} K. Grains within BL are warmer than in HI regions. Trapped L-alpha accounts for the extra heating that is required. This is a general effect that needs to be accounted for in all analyses that examine IR emission from H^+ regions. Very small grains that emit 60 micron radiation are enhanced in BL relative to HI by a factor of 2-3, while PAH's that emit 12 micron are probably deficient by a factor ~2.

9286 Stars: An Agglomeration of Stellar Polarization Catalogs

This is a revision. The revisions are minor. The new version of the catalog should be used in preference to the old. The most serious error in the older version was that $θ_diff$ was incorrect, being sometimes far too large, for Reiz and Franco entries; the correct values are all zero for that reference. We present an agglomeration of stellar polarization catalogs with results for 9286 stars. We have endeavored to eliminate errors, provide accurate (arcsecond) positions, sensibly weight multiple observations of the same star, and provide reasonable distances. This catalog is included as an ASCII file (catalog.txt) in the source of this submission.
