Moduli stacks of Galois representations and the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$

We give a categorical formulation of the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$,as an embedding of the derived category of locally admissible representations into the category of Ind-coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of two-dimensional representations of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p/\mathbb{Q}_p)$. Moreover, we relate our version of the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ to the cohomology of modular curves through a local-global compatibility formula.

Critical Lambda-adic modular forms and bi-ordinary complexes

We produce a flat $Λ$-module of $Λ$-adic critical slope overconvergent modular forms, producing a Hida-type theory that interpolates such forms over $p$-adically varying integer weights. This provides a Hida-theoretic explanation for an observation of Coleman that the rank of such forms is locally constant in the weight. The key to the interpolation is to use Coleman's presentation of de Rham cohomology in terms of overconvergent forms to link critical slope overconvergent modular forms with the part of the first coherent cohomology of modular curves interpolated by Boxer-Pilloni's higher Hida theory. The novelty is that we interpolate a critical period in cohomology using modular forms, complementing the classical Hida-theoretic interpolation of an ordinary period. Using this interpolation, we also interpolate bi-ordinary complexes in various weights into a perfect and self-dual complex of length 1 over $Λ$. By design, the cohomology of the bi-ordinary complex supports 2-dimensional $p$-adic representations of ${\rm Gal}(\bar{\bf Q}/{\bf Q})$ that become reducible and decomposable upon restriction to a decomposition group at $p$. As applications and motivations for the above constructions, we prove "$R = T$" theorems for the critical and bi-ordinary Hecke algebras, produce a degree-shifting Hecke action on the co-homology of bi-ordinary complexes, and specialize this degree-shifting action to weight 1 to produce, under a supplemental assumption, an action of a Stark unit on the part of weight 1 coherent cohomology over ${\bf Z}_p$ that is isotypic for an ordinary eigenform with complex multiplication.

Explicit non-Gorenstein R=T via rank bounds I: Deformation theory

Ribet has proven remarkable results about non-optimal levels of residually reducible Galois representations. We focus on a non-optimal level $N$ that is the product of two distinct primes and where the Galois deformation ring is not expected to be Gorenstein. We prove a Galois-theoretic criterion for the deformation ring to be as small as possible -- that is, for there to be a unique newform of level $N$ with reducible residual representation. When this criterion is satisfied, we deduce an $R=\mathbb{T}$ theorem.

Explicit non-Gorenstein R=T via rank bounds II: Computational aspects

This is the second in a pair of papers about residually reducible Galois deformation rings with non-optimal level. In the first paper, we proved a Galois-theoretic criterion for the deformation ring to be as small as possible. This paper focuses on the computations needed to verify this criterion. We adapt a technique developed by Sharifi to compute number fields with twisted-Heisenberg Galois group and prescribed ramification, and compute the splitting behavior of primes in these extensions.

Families of Bianchi modular symbols: critical base-change p-adic L-functions and p-adic Artin formalism

Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. In this article, we study the eigenvariety for $\mathrm{GL}_2/K$, proving an étaleness result for the weight map at non-critical classical points and a smoothness result at base-change classical points. We give three main applications of this; let $f$ be a $p$-stabilised newform of weight $k \geq 2$ without CM by $K$. Suppose $f$ has finite slope at $p$ and its base-change $f_{/K}$ to $K$ is $p$-regular. Then: (1) We construct a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $f_{/K}$ under assumptions on $f$ that conjecturally always hold, in particular with no non-critical assumption on $f/K$. (2) We construct three-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions over the eigenvariety interpolating the $p$-adic $L$-functions of classical base-change Bianchi cusp forms. (3) We prove that these base-change $p$-adic $L$-functions satisfy a $p$-adic Artin formalism result, that is, they factorise in the same way as the classical $L$-function under Artin formalism. In an appendix, Carl Wang-Erickson describes a base-change deformation functor and gives a characterisation of its Zariski tangent space.

The Eisenstein ideal with squarefree level

We use pseudodeformation theory to study the analogue of Mazur's Eisenstein ideal with certain squarefree levels. Given a prime number $p>3$ and a squarefree number $N$ satisfying certain conditions, we study the Eisenstein part of the $p$-adic Hecke algebra for $Γ_0(N)$, and show that it is a local complete intersection and isomorphic to a pseudodeformation ring. We also show that in certain cases, the Eisenstein ideal is not principal and that the cuspidal quotient of the Hecke algebra is not Gorenstein. As a corollary, we prove that "multiplicity one" fails for the modular Jacobian in these cases. In a particular case, this proves a conjecture of Ribet.

Presentations of non-commutative deformation rings via $A_\infty$-algebras and applications to deformations of Galois representations and pseudorepresentations

We introduce an $A_\infty$-algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of the endomorphism bimodule of a finite-dimensional representation of an associative algebra. We prove that this structure determines a presentation for non-commutative deformations of the representation. From this, we deduce presentations of universal deformation rings of Galois representations. In turn, we apply these presentations in order to deduce universal deformation rings of Galois pseudorepresentations, supplying a a tangent and obstruction theory for pseudorepresentations. This generalizes the broadly used tangent and obstruction theory for Galois representations. We also give applications, calculating the ranks of certain Hecke algebras.

A Harder-Narasimhan theory for Kisin modules

We develop a Harder-Narasimhan theory for Kisin modules generalizing a similar theory for finite flat group schemes due to Fargues. We prove the tensor product theorem, i.e., that the tensor product of semi-stable objects is again semi-stable. We then apply the tensor product theorem to the study of Kisin varieties for arbitrary connected reductive groups.

The rank of Mazur's Eisenstein ideal

We use pseudodeformation theory to study Mazur's Eisenstein ideal. Given prime numbers $N$ and $p>3$, we study the Eisenstein part of the $p$-adic Hecke algebra for $Γ_0(N)$. We compute the rank of this Hecke algebra (and, more generally, its Newton polygon) in terms of Massey products in Galois cohomology, answering a question of Mazur and generalizing a result of Calegari-Emerton. We also also give new proofs of Merel's result on this rank and of Mazur's results on the structure of the Hecke algebra.

Deformation conditions for pseudorepresentations

Given a property of representations satisfying a basic stability condition, Ramakrishna developed a variant of Mazur's Galois deformation theory for representations with that property. We introduce an axiomatic definition of pseudorepresentations with such a property. Among other things, we show that pseudorepresentations with a property enjoy a good deformation theory, generalizing Ramakrishna's theory to pseudorepresentations.

Class groups and local indecomposability for non-CM forms

In the late 1990's, R. Coleman and R. Greenberg (independently) asked for a global property characterizing those $p$-ordinary cuspidal eigenforms whose associated Galois representation becomes decomposable upon restriction to a decomposition group at $p$. It is expected that such $p$-ordinary eigenforms are precisely those with complex multiplication. In this paper, we study Coleman-Greenberg's question using Galois deformation theory. In particular, for $p$-ordinary eigenforms which are congruent to one with complex multiplication, we prove that the conjectured answer follows from the $p$-indivisibility of a certain class group.

Algebraic families of Galois representations and potentially semi-stable pseudodeformation rings

We construct and study the moduli of continuous representations of a profinite group with integral $p$-adic coefficients. We present this moduli space over the moduli space of continuous pseudorepresentations and show that this morphism is algebraizable. When this profinite group is the absolute Galois group of a $p$-adic local field, we show that these moduli spaces admit Zariski-closed loci cutting out Galois representations that are potentially semi-stable with bounded Hodge-Tate weights and a given Hodge and Galois type. As a consequence, we show that these loci descend to the universal deformation ring of the corresponding pseudorepresentation.

Pseudo-modularity and Iwasawa theory

We prove, assuming Greenberg's conjecture, that the ordinary eigencurve is Gorenstein at an intersection point between the Eisenstein family and the cuspidal locus. As a corollary, we obtain new results on Sharifi's conjecture. This result is achieved by constructing a universal ordinary pseudodeformation ring and proving an $R = \mathbb T$ result.

Ordinary pseudorepresentations and modular forms

In this short note, we observe that the techniques of our recent work "Pseudo-modularity and Iwasawa theory" can be used to provide a new proof of some of the residually reducible modularity lifting results of Skinner and Wiles. In these cases, we have found that a deformation ring of ordinary pseudorepresentations is equal to the Eisenstein local component of a Hida Hecke algebra. We also show that Vandiver's conjecture implies Sharifi's conjecture.
