Twisted crossed products of Banach algebras

Given a locally compact group $G$, a nondegenerate Banach algebra $A$ with a contractive approximate identity, a twisted action $(\alpha, \sigma)$ of $G$ on $A$, and a family $\mathcal{R}$ of uniformly bounded representations of $A$ on Banach spaces, we define the twisted crossed product $F_\mathcal{R}(G,A,\alpha, \sigma)$. When $\mathcal{R}$ consists of contractive representations, we show that $F_\mathcal{R}(G,A,\alpha, \sigma)$ is a Banach algebra with a contractive approximate identity, which can also be characterized by an isometric universal property. As an application, we specialize to the $L^p$-operator algebra setting, defining both the $L^p$-twisted crossed product and the reduced version. Finally, we give a generalization of the so-called Packer-Raeburn trick to the $L^p$-setting, showing that any $L^p$-twisted crossed product is "stably" isometrically isomorphic to an untwisted one.

Twisted Bredon-Illman Cohomology is a Morita Invariant

We show that the twisted Bredon-Illman cohomology defined by Mukherjee-Mukherjee applied to compact Lie group action groupoids is Morita-invariant. This cohomology uses coefficient systems twisted over the discrete tom Dieck equivariant fundamental groupoid. To show Morita invariance, we use bibundles to transfer coefficient systems from one groupoid to another Morita equivalent one. This generalises results of Pronk-Scull and Juran on ordinary Bredon-Illman cohomology by removing both the finite isotropy condition and restrictions on the coefficient systems.

$L^p$-spectral triples and $p$-quantum compact metric spaces

For $p \in [1, \infty)$, we generalize the concept of classical spectral triples by extending the framework from Hilbert spaces to $L^p$-spaces, and from C*-algebras to $L^p$-operator algebras. In addition, we define an $L^p$-spectral triple to be metric when the state space of the algebra has a $p$-quantum compact metric space structure. Specifically, we construct $L^p$-spectral triples for reduced $L^p$-group algebras of countable discrete groups with proper length functions and also for $L^p$ UHF-algebras of infinite tensor product type, the latter inspired by E. Christensen and C. Ivan's construction of a Dirac operator on AF C*-algebras. We prove that $L^p$-spectral triples associated with $L^p$-group algebras (provided that the length function is of bounded doubling) and those associated with $L^p$ UHF-algebras are always metric.

Bicategories of Action Groupoids

We prove that the 2-category of action Lie groupoids localised in the following three different ways yield equivalent bicategories: localising at equivariant weak equivalences à la Pronk, localising using surjective submersive equivariant weak equivalences and anafunctors à la Roberts, and localising at all weak equivalences. These constructions generalise the known case of representable orbifold groupoids. We also show that any weak equivalence between action Lie groupoids is isomorphic to the composition of two particularly nice forms of equivariant weak equivalences.

Collapse in Noncommutative Geometry and Spectral Continuity

If two compact quantum metric spaces are close in the metric sense, then how similar are they, as noncommutative spaces? In the classical realm of Riemannian geometry, informally, if two manifolds are close in the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, and belong to a class of manifolds with bounded curvature and diameter, then the spectra of their Laplacian or Dirac operators are also close under many scenari. Of particular interest is the case where a sequence of manifolds converge for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance to a manifold of lower dimension, and the question of the continuity, in some sense, of the spectra of geometrically relevant operators. In this paper, we initiate the study of the continuity of spectra and other properties of metric spectral triples under collapse in the noncommutative realm. As a first step in this study, we work with collapse for the spectral propinquity, an analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for spectral triples introduced by the second author, i.e. a form of metric for differential structures. Inspired by results from collapse in Riemannian geometry, we begin with the study of spectral triples which decompose, in some sense, in a vertical and a horizontal direction, and we collapse these spectral triples along the vertical direction. We obtain convergence results, and by the work of the second author, we conclude continuity results for the spectra of the Dirac operators of these spectral triples. Examples include collapse of product of spectral triples with one Abelian factor, $U(1)$ principal bundles over Riemannian spin manifolds, and noncommutative principal bundles, including C*-crossed-products and other noncommutative bundles.

Spectral Triples on noncommutative solenoids from the standard spectral triples on quantum tori

We address the natural question: as noncommutative solenoids are inductive limits of quantum tori, do the standard spectral triples on quantum tori converge to some spectral triple on noncommutative solenoid for the spectral propinquity? We answer this question by showing that, using appropriate bounded perturbation of the spectral triples on quantum tori, such a spectral triple on noncommutative solenoid can be constructed.

Euler characteristics of linear symplectic quotients and $\operatorname{O}(2)$-spaces

We give explicit computations of the $\Gamma$-Euler characteristic of several families of orbit space definable translation groupoids. These include the translation groupoids associated to finite-dimensional linear representations of the circle and real and unitary representations of the real $2\times 2$ orthogonal group. In the case of translation groupoids associated to linear symplectic quotients of representations of a arbitrary compact Lie group $G$, we show that unlike the other cases, the $\Gamma$-Euler characteristic depends only on the group and not on the representation.

The universal Euler characteristic and Burnside group for definable groupoids

We introduce the universal Euler characteristic of orbit space definable groupoids, a class of groupoids containing cocompact proper Lie groupoids as well as translation groupoids associated to proper definable group actions. We show that every additive and multiplicative invariant of orbit space definable groupoids with an additional local triviality hypothesis arises as a ring homomorphism applied to the universal Euler characteristic. This in particular includes the $\Gamma$-orbifold Euler characteristic introduced by the first and third authors when $\Gamma$ is a finitely presented group. For definable groupoids, where the object and arrow spaces as well as the structure maps are definable, we also introduce a Burnside group (which admits a partial multiplication), which generalizes the classical Burnside ring associated to compact Lie groups.

Isometry groups of inductive limits of metric spectral triples and Gromov-Hausdorff convergence

In this paper we study the groups of isometries and the set of bi-Lipschitz automorphisms of spectral triples from a metric viewpoint, in the propinquity framework of Latremoliere. In particular we prove that these groups and sets are compact in the automorphism group of the spectral triple C*-algebra with respect to the Monge-Kantorovich metric, which induces the topology of pointwise convergence. We then prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of the actions of various groups of isometries, in the sense of the covariant version of the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity -- a noncommutative analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance -- when working in the context of inductive limits of quantum compact metric spaces and metric spectral triples. We illustrate our work with examples including AF algebras and noncommutative solenoids.

Convergence of inductive sequences of spectral triples for the spectral propinquity

In the context of metric geometry, we introduce a new necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of an inductive sequence of quantum compact metric spaces for the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity, which is a noncommutative analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact metric spaces. This condition is easy to verify in many examples, such as quantum compact metric spaces associated to AF algebras or certain twisted convolution C*-algebras of discrete inductive limit groups. Our condition also implies the convergence of an inductive sequence of spectral triples in the sense of the spectral propinquity, a generalization of the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity on quantum compact metric spaces to the space of metric spectral triples. In particular we show the convergence of the state spaces of the underlying C*-algebras as quantum compact metric spaces, and also the convergence of the quantum dynamics induced by the Dirac operators in the spectral triples. We apply these results to new classes of inductive limit of even spectral triples on noncommutative solenoids and Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras. Our construction, which involves length functions with bounded doubling, adds geometric information and highlights the structure of these twisted C*-algebras as inductive limits.

Spectral Triples for Noncommutative Solenoids and a Wiener's lemma

In this paper we construct odd finitely summable spectral triples based on length functions of bounded doubling on noncommutative solenoids. Our spectral triples induce a Leibniz Lip-norm on the state spaces of the noncommutative solenoids, giving them the structure of Leibniz quantum compact metric spaces. By applying methods of R. Floricel and A. Ghorbanpour, we also show that our odd spectral triples on noncommutative solenoids can be considered as direct limits of spectral triples on rotation algebras. In the final section we prove a noncommutative Wiener's lemma and show that our odd spectral triples can be defined to have an associated smooth dense subalgebra which is stable under the holomorphic functional calculus, thus answering a question of B. Long and W. Wu. The construction of the smooth subalgebra also extends to the case of nilpotent discrete groups.

Differentiable stratified groupoids and a de Rham theorem for inertia spaces

We introduce the notions of a differentiable groupoid and a differentiable stratified groupoid, generalizations of Lie groupoids in which the spaces of objects and arrows have the structures of differentiable spaces, respectively differentiable stratified spaces, compatible with the groupoid structure. After studying basic properties of these groupoids including Morita equivalence, we prove a de Rham theorem for locally contractible differentiable stratified groupoids. We then focus on the study of the inertia groupoid associated to a proper Lie groupoid. We show that the loop and the inertia space of a proper Lie groupoid can be endowed with a natural Whitney B stratification, which we call the orbit Cartan type stratification. Endowed with this stratification, the inertia groupoid of a proper Lie groupoid becomes a locally contractible differentiable stratified groupoid.

The spectra of digraphs with Morita equivalent $C^\ast$-algebras

Eilers et al. have recently completed the geometric classification of unital graph $C^\ast$-algebras up to Morita equivalence using a set of moves on the corresponding digraphs. We explore the question of whether these moves preserve the nonzero elements of the spectrum of a finite digraph, which in this paper is allowed to have loops and parallel edges. We consider several different digraph spectra that have been studied in the literature, answering this question for the Laplace and adjacency spectra, their skew counterparts, the symmetric adjacency spectrum, the adjacency spectrum of the line digraph, the Hermitian adjacency spectrum, and the normalized Laplacian, considering in most cases two ways that these spectra can be defined in the presence of parallel edges. We show that the adjacency spectra of the digraph and line digraph are preserved by a subset of the moves, and the skew adjacency and Laplace spectra are preserved by the Cuntz splice. We give counterexamples to show that the other spectra are not preserved by the remaining moves. The same results hold if one restricts to the class of strongly connected digraphs.

Orbifold Euler characteristics of non-orbifold groupoids

For a finitely presented discrete group $Γ$, we introduce two generalizations of the orbifold Euler characteristic and $Γ$-orbifold Euler characteristic to a class of proper topological groupoids large enough to include all cocompact proper Lie groupoids. The $Γ$-Euler characteristic is defined as an integral with respect to the Euler characteristic over the orbit space of the groupoid, and the $Γ$-inertia Euler characteristic is the usual Euler characteristic of the $Γ$-inertia space associated to the groupoid. A key ingredient is the application of o-minimal structures to study orbit spaces of topological groupoids. Our main result is that the $Γ$-Euler characteristic and $Γ$-inertia Euler characteristic coincide and generalize the higher-order orbifold Euler characteristics of Gusein-Zade, Luengo, and Melle-Hernández from the case of a translation groupoid by a compact Lie group and $Γ= \mathbb{Z}^\ell$. By realizing the $Γ$-Euler characteristic as the usual Euler characteristic of a topological space, we demonstrate that it is Morita invariant in the category of topological groupoids and satisfies familiar properties of the classical Euler characteristic. We give an additional formulation of the $Γ$-Euler characteristic for a cocompact proper Lie groupoid in terms of a finite covering by orbispace charts. In the case that the groupoid is an abelian extension of a translation groupoid by a bundle of groups, we relate the $Γ$-Euler characteristics to those of the translation groupoid and bundle of groups.

Cocycles on Certain Groupoids Associated to $ \mathbb{N}^{k} $-Actions

We consider groupoids constructed from a finite number of commuting local homeomorphisms acting on a compact metric space, and study generalized Ruelle operators and $ C^{\ast} $-algebras associated to these groupoids. We provide a new characterization of $ 1 $-cocycles on these groupoids taking values in a locally compact abelian group, given in terms of $ k $-tuples of continuous functions on the unit space satisfying certain canonical identities. Using this, we develop an extended Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theory for dynamical systems of several commuting operators ($ k $-Ruelle triples and commuting Ruelle operators). Results on KMS states on $ C^{\ast} $-algebras constructed from these groupoids are derived. When the groupoids being studied come from higher-rank graphs, our results recover existence-uniqueness results for KMS states associated to the graphs.

Irreducibility and monicity for representations of $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras

The representations of a $k$-graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ)$ which arise from $Λ$-semibranching function systems are closely linked to the dynamics of the $k$-graph $Λ$. In this paper, we undertake a systematic analysis of the question of irreducibility for these representations. We provide a variety of necessary and sufficient conditions for irreducibility, as well as a number of examples indicating the optimality of our results. We also explore the relationship between irreducible $Λ$-semibranching representations and purely atomic representations of $C^*(Λ)$. Throughout the paper, we work in the setting of row-finite source-free $k$-graphs; this paper constitutes the first analysis of $Λ$-semibranching representations at this level of generality.

Approximating orbifold spectra using collapsing connected sums

For a closed Riemannian orbifold $O$, we compare the spectra of the Laplacian, acting on functions or differential forms, to the Neumann spectra of the orbifold with boundary given by a domain $U$ in $O$ whose boundary is a smooth manifold. Generalizing results of several authors, we prove that the metric of $O$ can be perturbed to ensure that the first $N$ eigenvalues of $U$ and $O$ are arbitrarily close to one another. This involves a generalization of the Hodge decomposition to the case of orbifolds with manifold boundary. Using these results, we study the behavior of the Laplace spectrum on functions or forms of a connected sum of two Riemannian orbifolds as one orbifold in the pair is collapsed to a point. We show that the limits of the eigenvalues of the connected sum are equal to those of the non-collapsed orbifold in the pair. In doing so, we prove the existence of a sequence of orbifolds with singular points whose eigenvalue spectra come arbitrarily close to the spectrum of a manifold, and a sequence of manifolds whose eigenvalue spectra come arbitrarily close to the eigenvalue spectrum of an orbifold with singular points. We also consider the question of prescribing the first part of the spectrum of an orientable orbifold.
