Realizability of fusion systems by discrete groups: II

We compare four different types of realizability for saturated fusion systems over discrete $p$-toral groups. For example, when $G$ is a locally finite group all of whose $p$-subgroups are artinian (hence discrete $p$-toral), we show that it has ``weakly Sylow'' $p$-subgroups and give explicit constructions of saturated fusion systems and associated linking systems associated to $G$. We also show that a fusion system over a discrete $p$-toral group $S$ is saturated if its set of morphisms is closed under a certain topology and the finite subgroups of $S$ satisfy the saturation axioms, and prove a version of the Cartan-Eilenberg stable elements theorem for locally finite groups.

Realizability of fusion systems by discrete groups

For a prime $p$, fusion systems over discrete $p$-toral groups are categories that model and generalize the $p$-local structure of Lie groups and certain other infinite groups in the same way that fusion systems over finite $p$-groups model and generalize the $p$-local structure of finite groups. In the finite case, it is natural to say that a fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ is realizable if it is isomorphic to the fusion system of a finite group, but it is less clear what realizability should mean in the discrete $p$-toral case. In this paper, we look at some of the different types of realizability for fusion systems over discrete $p$-toral groups, including realizability by linear torsion groups and sequential realizability, of which the latter is the most general. After showing that fusion systems of compact Lie groups are always realized by linear torsion groups (hence sequentially realizable), we give some new tools for showing that certain fusion systems are not sequentially realizable, and illustrate it with two large families of examples.

Realizability and tameness of fusion systems

A saturated fusion system over a finite $p$-group $S$ is a category whose objects are the subgroups of $S$ and whose morphisms are injective homomorphisms between the subgroups satisfying certain axioms. A fusion system over $S$ is realized by a finite group $G$ if $S$ is a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and morphisms in the category are those induced by conjugation in $G$. One recurrent question in this subject is to find criteria as to whether a given saturated fusion system is realizable or not. One main result in this paper is that a saturated fusion system is realizable if all of its components (in the sense of Aschbacher) are realizable. Another result is that all realizable fusion systems are tame: a finer condition on realizable fusion systems that involves describing automorphisms of a fusion system in terms of those of some group that realizes it. Stated in this way, these results depend on the classification of finite simple groups, but we also give more precise formulations whose proof is independent of the classification.

Loop space homology of a small category

In a 2009 paper, Dave Benson gave a description in purely algebraic terms of the mod $p$ homology of $Ω(BG^\wedge_p)$, when $G$ is a finite group, $BG^\wedge_p$ is the $p$-completion of its classifying space, and $Ω(BG^\wedge_p)$ is the loop space of $BG^\wedge_p$. The main purpose of this work is to shed new light on Benson's result by extending it to a more general setting. As a special case, we show that if $\mathcal{C}$ is a small category, $|\mathcal{C}|$ is the geometric realization of its nerve, $R$ is a commutative ring, and $|\mathcal{C}|^+_R$ is a "plus construction" for $|\mathcal{C}|$ in the sense of Quillen (taken with respect to $R$-homology), then $H_*(Ω(|\mathcal{C}|^+_R);R)$ can be described as the homology of a chain complex of projective $R\mathcal{C}$-modules satisfying a certain list of algebraic conditions that determine it uniquely up to chain homotopy. Benson's theorem is now the case where $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of a finite group $G$, $R=\mathbb{F}_p$ for some prime $p$, and $|\mathcal{C}|^+_R=BG^\wedge_p$.

An extension theory for partial groups

Partial groups are a natural generalization of discrete groups recently introduced by Chermak in connection with the theory of fusion systems. In this paper we develop an extension theory for partial groups based in the classical theory of fibre bundles of simplicial sets.

Minimality in diagrams of simplicial sets

We formulate the concept of minimal fibration in the context of fibrations in the model category $\mathbf{S}^\mathcal{C}$ of $\mathcal{C}$-diagrams of simplicial sets, for a small index category $\mathcal{C}$. When $\mathcal{C}$ is an $EI$-category satisfying some mild finiteness restrictions, we show that every fibration of $\mathcal{C}$-diagrams admits a well-behaved minimal model. As a consequence, we establish a classification theorem for fibrations in $\mathbf{S}^\mathcal{C}$ over a constant diagram, generalizing the classification theorem of Barratt, Gugenheim, and Moore for simplicial fibrations.

Automorphisms of fusion systems of finite simple groups of Lie type

For a finite group G of Lie type and a prime p, we compare the automorphism groups of the fusion and linking systems of G at p with the automorphism group of G itself. When p is the defining characteristic of G, they are all isomorphic, with a very short list of exceptions. When p is different from the defining characteristic, the situation is much more complex, but can always be reduced to a case where the natural map from Out(G) to outer automorphisms of the fusion or linking system is split surjective. This work is motivated in part by questions involving extending the local structure of a group by a group of automorphisms, and in part by wanting to describe self homotopy equivalences of the p-completion of the classifying space BG in terms of Out(G).

An algebraic model for finite loop spaces

The theory of p-local compact groups, developed in an earlier paper by the same authors, is designed to give a unified framework in which to study the p-local homotopy theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups, as well as some other families of a similar nature. It also includes, and in many aspects generalizes, the earlier theory of p-local finite groups. In this paper we show that the theory extends to include classifying spaces of finite loop spaces. Our main theorem is in fact more general and states that in a fibration whose base spaces if the classifying space of a finite group, and whose fibre is the classifying space of a p-local compact group, the total space is, up to p-completion the classifying space of a p-local compact group.

Equivalences between fusion systems of finite groups of Lie type

We prove, for certain pairs G,G of finite groups of Lie type, that the p-fusion systems for G and G' are equivalent. In other words, there is an isomorphism between a Sylow p-subgroup of G and one of G' which preserves p-fusion. This occurs, for example, when G=H(q) and G'=H(q') for a simple Lie type H, and q and q' are prime powers, both prime to p, which generate the same closed subgroup of the p-adic units. Our proof uses homotopy theoretic properties of the p-completed classifying spaces of G and G', and we know of no purely algebraic proof of this result.

Modular invariants detecting the cohomology of BF_4 at the prime 3

Attributed to J F Adams is the conjecture that, at odd primes, the mod-p cohomology ring of the classifying space of a connected compact Lie group is detected by its elementary abelian p-subgroups. In this note we rely on Toda's calculation of H^*(BF_4;F_3) in order to show that the conjecture holds in case of the exceptional Lie group F_4. To this aim we use invariant theory in order to identify parts of H^*(BF_4;F_3) with invariant subrings in the cohomology of elementary abelian 3-subgroups of F_4. These subgroups themselves are identified via the Steenrod algebra action on H^*(BF_4;F_3).

Subgroup families controlling p-local finite groups

A p-local finite group consists of a finite p-group S, together with a pair of categories which encode ``conjugacy'' relations among subgroups of S, and which are modelled on the fusion in a Sylow p-subgroup of a finite group. It contains enough information to define a classifying space which has many of the same properties as p-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. In this paper, we examine which subgroups control this structure. More precisely, we prove that the question of whether an abstract fusion system F over a finite p-group S is saturated can be determined by just looking at smaller classes of subgroups of S. We also prove that the homotopy type of the classifying space of a given p-local finite group is independent of the family of subgroups used to define it, in the sense that it remains unchanged when that family ranges from the set of F-centric F-radical subgroups (at a minimum) to the set of F-quasicentric subgroups (at a maximum). Finally, we look at constrained fusion systems, analogous to p-constrained finite groups, and prove that they in fact all arise from groups.

Extension of p-local finite groups

A p-local finite group consists of a finite p-group S, together with a pair of categories which encode ``conjugacy'' relations among subgroups of S, and which are modelled on the fusion in a Sylow p-subgroup of a finite group. It contains enough information to define a classifying space which has many of the same properties as p-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. In this paper, we study and classify extensions of p-local finite groups, and also compute the fundamental group of the classifying space of a p-local finite group.
