General properties of $\mathbf {f(R)}$ gravity vacuum solutions

General properties of vacuum solutions of $f(R)$ gravity are obtained by the condition that the divergence of the Weyl tensor is zero and $f''\neq 0$. Specifically, a theorem states that the gradient of the curvature scalar, $\nabla R$, is an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor and, if it is time-like, the space-time is a Generalized Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric; in dimension four, it is Friedman-Robertson-Walker.

Gray s decomposition on doubly warped product manifolds and applications

A. Gray presented an interesting $O\left( n\right) $ invariant decomposition of the covariant derivative of the Ricci tensor. Manifolds whose Ricci tensor satisfies the defining property of each orthogonal class are called Einstein-like manifolds. In the present paper, we answered the following question: Under what condition(s), does a factor manifold $M_{i},i=1,2$ of a doubly warped product manifold $M=_{f_{2}}M_{1}\times _{f_{1}}M_{2}$ lie in the same Einstein-like class of $M$? By imposing sufficient and necessary conditions on the warping functions, an inheritance property of each class is proved. As an application, Einstein-like doubly warped product space-times of type $\mathcal{A},$ $\mathcal{B}$ or $\mathcal{P}$ are considered.

The Jordan algebras of Riemann, Weyl and curvature compatible tensors

Given the Riemann, or the Weyl, or a generalized curvature tensor K, a symmetric tensor $b_{ij}$ is named `compatible' with the curvature tensor if $b_i{}^m K_{jklm} + b_j{}^m K_{kilm} + b_k{}^m K_{ijlm} = 0$. Amongst showing known and new properties, we prove that they form a special Jordan algebra, i.e. the symmetrized product of K-compatible tensors is K-compatible.

On the uniqueness of a shear-vorticity-acceleration-free velocity field in space-times

We prove that in space-times a velocity field that is shear, vorticity and acceleration-free, if any, is unique up to reflection, with these exceptions: generalized Robertson-Walker space-times whose space sub-manifold is warped, and twisted space-times (the scale function is space-time dependent) whose space sub-manifold is doubly twisted. In space-time dimension n = 4, the Ricci and the Weyl tensors are specified, and the Einstein equations yield a mixture of two perfect fluids.

Cosmological perfect fluids in higher-order gravity

We prove that in Robertson-Walker space-times (and in generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes of dimension greater than 3 with divergence-free Weyl tensor) all higher-order gravitational corrections of the Hilbert-Einstein Lagrangian density $F(R,\square R, ... , \square^k R)$ have the form of perfect fluids in the field equations. This statement definitively allows to deal with dark energy fluids as curvature effects.

Cosmological perfect fluids in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In an $n$-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, it is rigorously shown that any analytical theory of gravity $f(R,{\cal G})$, where $R$ is the curvature scalar and $\cal G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant, can be associated to a perfect-fluid stress-energy tensor. In this perspective, dark components of the cosmological Hubble flow can be geometrically interpreted.

Perfect-fluid, generalised Robertson-Walker space-times, and Gray's decomposition

We give new necessary and sufficient conditions on the Weyl tensor for generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) space-times to be perfect-fluid space-times. For GRW space-times, we determine the form of the Ricci tensor in all the O(n)-invariant subspaces provided by Gray's decomposition of the gradient of the Ricci tensor. In all but one, the Ricci tensor is Einstein or has the form of perfect fluid. We discuss the corresponding equations of state that result from the Einstein equation in dimension 4, where perfect-fluid GRW space-times are Robertson-Walker.

w=1/3 to w=-1 evolution in a Robertson-Walker space-time with constant scalar curvature

The Ricci tensor of a Robertson-Walker space-time is here specified by requiring constancy of the scalar curvature and a vanishing spatial curvature. By entering this Ricci tensor in Einstein's equations (without cosmological constant), the cosmological fluid shows a transition from a pure radiation to a Lambda equation of state. In other words, the RW geometry with constant scalar curvature and flat space, fixes the limit values w=1/3 and w=-1, without any hypothesis on the cosmological fluid. The value of the scalar curvature fixes the time-scale for the transition. For this reason, we investigate the 'toy-universe' with Hubble parameter h = 0.673 and temperature Tcmb = 2.72K. The model predicts an age of the universe in the range 7.3-13.7 Gyr.

Cosmological perfect-fluids in f(R) gravity

We show that an n-dimensional generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) space-time with divergence-free conformal curvature tensor exhibits a perfect fluid stress-energy tensor for any f(R) gravity model. Furthermore we prove that a conformally flat GRW space-time is still a perfect fluid in both f(R) and quadratic gravity where other curvature invariants are considered.

A simple property of the Weyl tensor for a shear, vorticity and acceleration-free velocity field

We prove that, in a space-time of dimension n>3 with a velocity field that is shear-free, vorticity-free and acceleration-free, the covariant divergence of the Weyl tensor is zero if the contraction of the Weyl tensor with the velocity is zero. The other way, if the covariant divergence of the Weyl tensor is zero, then the contraction of the Weyl tensor with the velocity has recurrent geodesic derivative. This partly extends a property found in Generalised Robertson-Walker spacetimes, where the velocity is also eigenvector of the Ricci tensor. Despite the simplicity of the statement, the proof is involved. As a product of the same calculation, we introduce a curvature tensor with an interesting recurrence property.

Shear and vorticity of perfect-fluid spacetimes and the shear-free conjecture

We obtain expressions for the shear and the vorticity tensors of perfect-fluid spacetimes, in terms of the divergence of the Weyl tensor. For such spacetimes, we prove that if the gradient of the energy density is parallel to the velocity, then either the expansion rate is zero, or the vorticity vanishes. This statement recalls the "shear-free conjecture" for a perfect barotropic fluid: vanishing shear implies either vanishing expansion rate or vanishing vorticity. Finally, we give a new condition for a perfect fluid to be a Generalized Robinson-Walker spacetime.

Twisted Lorentzian manifolds, a characterization with torse-forming time-like unit vectors

Robertson-Walker and Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes may be characterized by the existence of a time-like unit torse-forming vector field, with other constrains. We show that Twisted manifolds may still be characterized by the existence of such (unique) vector field, with no other constrain. Twisted manifolds generalize RW and GRW spacetimes by admitting a scale function that depends both on time and space. We obtain the Ricci tensor, corresponding to the stress-energy tensor of an imperfect fluid.

Generalized Robertson-Walker space times, a survey

Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes extend the notion of Robertson-Walker spacetimes, by allowing for spatial non-homogeneity. A survey is presented, with main focus on Chen's characterization in terms of a timelike concircular vector. Together with their most important properties, some new results are presented.

A note on extended Lorentzian recurrent manifolds

Extended recurrent pseudo-Riemannian manifolds were introduced by Mileva Prvanovic'. We reconsider her work in the light of recent results and show that the manifold is conformally flat, and it is a space of quasi-constant curvature. We also show that an extended recurrent Lorentzian manifold, with time-like associated covector, is a perfect fluid Robertson-Walker space-time. We obtain the equation of state; in n = 4 and if the scalar curvature is zero, a model for incoherent radiation is obtained.

On the Weyl and Ricci tensors of Generalized Robertson-Walker space-times

We prove theorems about the Ricci and the Weyl tensors on generalized Robertson-Walker space-times of dimension $n\ge 3$. In particular, we show that the concircular vector introduced by Chen decomposes the Ricci tensor as a perfect fluid term plus a term linear in the contracted Weyl tensor. The Weyl tensor is harmonic if and only if it is annihilated by Chen's vector, and any of the two conditions is necessary and sufficient for the GRW space-time to be a quasi-Einstein (perfect fluid) manifold. Finally, the general structure of the Riemann tensor for Robertson-Walker space-times is given, in terms of Chen's vector. A GRW space-time in n = 4 with null conformal divergence is a Robertson-Walker space-time.

A condition for a perfect-fluid space-time to be a generalized Robertson-Walker space-time

A perfect-fluid space-time of dimension n>3 with 1) irrotational velocity vector field, 2) null divergence of the Weyl tensor, is a generalised Robertson-Walker space-time with Einstein fiber. Condition 1) is verified whenever pressure and energy density are related by an equation of state. The contraction of the Weyl tensor with the velocity vector field is zero. Conversely, a generalized Robertson-Walker space-time with null divergence of the Weyl tensor is a perfect-fluid space-time.
