Bach-flat gradient steady Ricci solitons

In this paper we prove that any $n$-dimensional ($n\ge 4$) complete Bach-flat gradient steady Ricci soliton with positive Ricci curvature is isometric to the Bryant soliton. We also show that a three-dimensional gradient steady Ricci soliton with divergence-free Bach tensor is either flat or isometric to the Bryant soliton. In particular, these results improve the corresponding classification theorems for complete locally conformally flat gradient steady Ricci solitons in [6] and [9].

Locally conformally flat quasi-Einstein manifolds

In this paper we prove that any complete locally conformally flat quasi-Einstein manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$-dimensional fibers of constant curvature. This result includes also the case of locally conformally flat gradient Ricci solitons.

Ricci solitons - The equation point of view

We discuss some classification results for Ricci solitons, that is, self similar solutions of the Ricci Flow. Some simple proofs of known results will be presented. In detail, we will take the equation point of view, trying to avoid the tools provided by considering the dynamic properties of the Ricci flow.

On Perelman's Dilaton

By means of a Kaluza-Klein type argument we show that the Perelman's F-functional is the Einstein-Hilbert action in a space with extra ``phantom'' dimensions. In this way, we try to interpret some remarks of Perelman in the introduction and at the end of the first section in his first famous paper. As a consequence the Ricci flow (modified by a diffeomorphism and a time-dependent factor) is the evolution of the ``real'' part of the metric under a constrained gradient flow of the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action in higher dimension.

Singular Perturbations of Mean Curvature Flow

We introduce a regularization method for mean curvature flow of a submanifold of arbitrary codimension in the Euclidean space, through higher order equations. We prove that the regularized problems converge to the mean curvature flow for all times before the first singularity.

Some Properties of the Distance Function and a Conjecture of De Giorgi

We analyse the geometric properties of the high derivatives of the distance function from a submanifold of the Euclidean space. In particular, we show some relations with the second fundamental form and its covariant derivatives of independent interest. As an application we prove a conjecture of Ennio De Giorgi on the evolution of submanifolds of the Euclidean space by the gradient of functionals depending on the derivatives of the distance function.

Motion by Curvature of Planar Networks

We consider the motion by curvature of a network of smooth curves with multiple junctions in the plane, that is, the geometric gradient flow associated to the length functional. Such a flow represents the evolution of a two--dimensional multiphase system where the energy is simply the sum of the lengths of the interfaces, in particular it is a possible model for the growth of grain boundaries. Moreover, the motion of these networks of curves is the simplest example of curvature flow for sets which are ``essentially'' non regular. As a first step, in this paper we study in detail the case of three curves in the plane concurring at a single triple junction and with the other ends fixed. We show some results about the existence, uniqueness and, in particular, the global regularity of the flow, following the line of analysis carried on in the last years for the evolution by mean curvature of smooth curves and hypersurfaces.

Smooth geometric evolutions of hypersurfaces

We consider the gradient flow of hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space associated to geometric energy functionals. We show that for particular functionals depending by higher covariant derivatives of the curvature, singularities in finite time cannot occur during the evolution. Such geometric functionals are related to similar ones proposed by Ennio De Giorgi, who conjectured for them an analogous regularity result.
