Ergodicity for nonlinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative Poisson noise

We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to stochastic evolution equations with monotone drift and multiplicative Poisson noise in the variational setting, thus covering a large class of (fully) nonlinear partial differential equations perturbed by jump noise. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence, ergodicity, and uniqueness of invariant measures. Furthermore, under mild additional assumptions, we prove that the Kolmogorov equation associated to the stochastic equation with additive noise is solvable in $L_1$ spaces with respect to an invariant measure.

L^p estimates for Feynman-Kac propagators with time-dependent reference measures

We introduce a class of time-inhomogeneous transition operators of Feynman-Kac type that can be considered as a generalization of symmetric Markov semigroups to the case of a time-dependent reference measure. Applying weighted Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, we derive L^p-L^p and L^p-L^q estimates for the transition operators. Since the operators are not Markovian, the estimates depend crucially on the value of p. Our studies are motivated by applications to sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.

Local well-posedness of Musiela's SPDE with Lévy noise

We determine sufficient conditions on the volatility coefficient of Musiela's stochastic partial differential equation driven by an infinite dimensional L{é}vy process so that it admits a unique local mild solution in spaces of functions whose first derivative is square integrable with respect to a weight.

Regular dependence on initial data for stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative Poisson noise

We prove existence, uniqueness and Lipschitz dependence on the initial datum for mild solutions of stochastic partial differential equations with Lipschitz coefficients driven by Wiener and Poisson noise. Under additional assumptions, we prove Gateaux and Frechet differentiability of solutions with respect to the initial datum. As an application, we obtain gradient estimates for the resolvent associated to the mild solution. Finally, we prove the strong Feller property of the associated semigroup.

Stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo equations on networks with impulsive noise

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations with stochastic dynamical boundary conditions that arises in models of neurophysiology for the diffusion of electrical potentials through a finite network of neurons. Motivated by the discussion in the biological literature, we impose a general diffusion equation on each edge through a generalized version of the FitzHugh-Nagumo model, while the noise acting on the boundary is described by a generalized stochastic Kirchhoff law on the nodes. In the abstract framework of matrix operators theory, we rewrite this stochastic boundary value problem as a stochastic evolution equation in infinite dimensions with a power-type nonlinearity, driven by an additive Lévy noise. We prove global well-posedness in the mild sense for such stochastic partial differential equation by monotonicity methods.

On controlled linear diffusions with delay in a model of optimal advertising under uncertainty with memory effects

We consider a class of dynamic advertising problems under uncertainty in the presence of carryover and distributed forgetting effects, generalizing a classical model of Nerlove and Arrow. In particular, we allow the dynamics of the product goodwill to depend on its past values, as well as previous advertising levels. Building on previous work of two of the authors, the optimal advertising model is formulated as an infinite dimensional stochastic control problem. We obtain (partial) regularity as well as approximation results for the corresponding value function. Under specific structural assumptions we study the effects of delays on the value function and optimal strategy. In the absence of carryover effects, since the value function and the optimal advertising policy can be characterized in terms of the solution of the associated HJB equation, we obtain sharper characterizations of the optimal policy.

Variational inequalities in Hilbert spaces with measures and optimal stopping problems

We study the existence theory for parabolic variational inequalities in weighted $L^2$ spaces with respect to excessive measures associated with a transition semigroup. We characterize the value function of optimal stopping problems for finite and infinite dimensional diffusions as a generalized solution of such a variational inequality. The weighted $L^2$ setting allows us to cover some singular cases, such as optimal stopping for stochastic equations with degenerate diffusion coefficient. As an application of the theory, we consider the pricing of American-style contingent claims. Among others, we treat the cases of assets with stochastic volatility and with path-dependent payoffs.

A class of stochastic games with infinitely many interacting agents related to Glauber dynamics on random graphs

We introduce and study a class of infinite-horizon non-zero-sum non-cooperative stochastic games with infinitely many interacting agents using ideas of statistical mechanics. First we show, in the general case of asymmetric interactions, the existence of a strategy that allows any player to eliminate losses after a finite random time. In the special case of symmetric interactions, we also prove that, as time goes to infinity, the game converges to a Nash equilibrium. Moreover, assuming that all agents adopt the same strategy, using arguments related to those leading to perfect simulation algorithms, spatial mixing and ergodicity are proved. In turn, ergodicity allows us to prove ``fixation'', i.e. that players will adopt a constant strategy after a finite time. The resulting dynamics is related to zero-temperature Glauber dynamics on random graphs of possibly infinite volume.

Optimal distributed dynamic advertising

We propose a novel approach to modeling advertising dynamics for a firm operating over distributed market domain based on controlled partial differential equations of diffusion type. Using our model, we consider a general type of finite-horizon profit maximization problem in a monopoly setting. By reformulating this profit maximization problem as an optimal control problem in infinite dimensions, we derive sufficient conditions for the existence of its optimal solutions under general profit functions, as well as state and control constraints, and provide general characterization of the optimal solutions. Sharper, feedback-form, characterizations of the optimal solutions are obtained for two variants of the general problem.

Convergence of sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods: I. Nonlinear flow of probability measures

Sequential Monte Carlo Samplers are a class of stochastic algorithms for Monte Carlo integral estimation w.r.t. probability distributions, which combine elements of Markov chain Monte Carlo methods and importance sampling/resampling schemes. We develop a stability analysis by functional inequalities for a nonlinear flow of probability measures describing the limit behavior of the algorithms as the number of particles tends to infinity. Stability results are derived both under global and local assumptions on the generator of the underlying Metropolis dynamics. This allows us to prove that the combined methods sometimes have good asymptotic stability properties in multimodal setups where traditional MCMC methods mix extremely slowly. For example, this holds for the mean field Ising model at all temperatures.

The stochastic goodwill problem

Stochastic control problems related to optimal advertising under uncertainty are considered. In particular, we determine the optimal strategies for the problem of maximizing the utility of goodwill at launch time and minimizing the disutility of a stream of advertising costs that extends until the launch time for some classes of stochastic perturbations of the classical Nerlove-Arrow dynamics. We also consider some generalizations such as problems with constrained budget and with discretionary launching.

Stochastic optimal control of delay equations arising in advertising models

We consider a class of optimal control problems of stochastic delay differential equations (SDDE) that arise in connection with optimal advertising under uncertainty for the introduction of a new product to the market, generalizing classical work of Nerlove and Arrow (1962). In particular, we deal with controlled SDDE where the delay enters both the state and the control. Following ideas of Vinter and Kwong (1981) (which however hold only in the deterministic case), we reformulate the problem as an infinite dimensional stochastic control problem to which we associate, through the dynamic programming principle, a second order Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. We show a verification theorem and we exhibit some simple cases where such equation admits an explicit smooth solution, allowing us to construct optimal feedback controls.

On the reconstruction of the drift of a diffusion from transition probabilities which are partially observed in space

The problem of reconstructing the drift of a diffusion in $\erre^d$, $d\geq 2$, from the transition probability density observed outside a domain is considered. The solution of this problem also solves a new inverse problem for a class of parabolic partial differential equations. This work considerably extends \cite{jsp} in terms of generality, both concerning assumptions on the drift coefficient, and allowing for non-constant diffusion coefficient. Sufficient conditions for solvability of this type of inverse problem for $d=1$ are also given.
