Variational derivation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation

We introduce a variational formulation of the homogeneous Boltzmann equation, with hard-sphere cross section, which selects the unique energy conserving solution. We prove that this solution arises from the microscopic dynamics, namely Kac's walk, and we establish the propagation in time of entropic chaoticity, under the minimal assumption that the initial distribution is entropically chaotic.

Pathwise uniqueness by noise for singular stochastic PDEs

Pathwise uniqueness for stochastic PDEs with drift in differential form is a main open problem in the recent literature on regularisation by noise. This paper establishes a self-contained theory in the framework of stochastic evolution equations on separable Hilbert spaces and provides a first result to address such an issue. The singularity of the drift allows to achieve novel uniqueness results for several classes of examples, ranging from fluid-dynamics to phase-separation models.

Weak stability by noise for approximations of doubly nonlinear evolution equations

Doubly nonlinear stochastic evolution equations are considered. Upon assuming the additive noise to be rough enough, we prove the existence of probabilistically weak solutions of Friedrichs type and study their uniqueness in law. This entails stability for approximations of stochastic doubly nonlinear equations in a weak probabilistic sense. Such effect is a genuinely stochastic, as doubly nonlinear equations are not even expected to exhibit uniqueness in the deterministic case.

Weak uniqueness by noise for singular stochastic PDEs

We prove weak uniqueness of mild solutions for general classes of SPDEs on a Hilbert space. The main novelty is that the drift is only defined on a Sobolev-type subspace and no Hölder-continuity assumptions are required. This framework turns out to be effective to achieve novel uniqueness results for several specific examples. Such wide range of applications is obtained by exploiting either coloured or rougher-than-cylindrical noises.

A note on regularity and separation for the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with logarithmic potential

We prove refined space-time regularity for the classical stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with logarithmic potential. This allows to establish a random separation property, i.e. that the trajectories of the solution are strictly separated from the potential barriers. The present contribution extends the results obtained in Bertacco et al. (2022), where separation was proved only for $p$-Laplace operators with $p$ greater than the space-dimension.

Wasserstein stability of porous medium-type equations on manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below

Given a complete, connected Riemannian manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Ricci curvature bounded from below, we discuss the stability of the solutions of a porous medium-type equation with respect to the 2-Wasserstein distance. We produce (sharp) stability estimates under negative curvature bounds, which to some extent generalize well-known results by Sturm and Otto-Westdickenberg. The strategy of the proof mainly relies on a quantitative $L^1-L^\infty$ smoothing property of the equation considered, combined with the Hamiltonian approach developed by Ambrosio, Mondino and Savaré in a metric-measure setting.

Random separation property for stochastic Allen-Cahn-type equations

We study a large class of stochastic $p$-Laplace Allen-Cahn equations with singular potential. Under suitable assumptions on the (multiplicative-type) noise we first prove existence, uniqueness, and regularity of variational solutions. Then, we show that a random separation property holds, i.e. almost every trajectory is strictly separated in space and time from the potential barriers. The threshold of separation is random, and we further provide exponential estimates on the probability of separation from the barriers. Eventually, we exhibit a convergence-in-probability result for the random separation threshold towards the deterministic one, as the noise vanishes, and we obtain an estimate of the convergence rate.

Large deviations for Kac-like walks

We introduce a Kac's type walk whose rate of binary collisions preserves the total momentum but not the kinetic energy. In the limit of large number of particles we describe the dynamics in terms of empirical measure and flow, proving the corresponding large deviation principle. The associated rate function has an explicit expression. As a byproduct of this analysis, we provide a gradient flow formulation of the Boltzmann-Kac equation.

Lagrangian, Eulerian and Kantorovich formulations of multi-agent optimal control problems: Equivalence and Gamma-convergence

This paper is devoted to the study of multi-agent deterministic optimal control problems. We initially provide a thorough analysis of the Lagrangian, Eulerian and Kantorovich formulations of the problems, as well as of their relaxations. Then we exhibit some equivalence results among the various representations and compare the respective value functions. To do it, we combine techniques and ideas from optimal transportation, control theory, Young measures and evolution equations in Banach spaces. We further exploit the connections among Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions to derive consistency results as the number of particles/agents tends to infinity. To that purpose we prove an empirical version of the Superposition Principle and obtain suitable Gamma-convergence results for the controlled systems.

Semilinear Kolmogorov equations on the space of continuous functions via BSDEs

We deal with a class of semilinear parabolic PDEs on the space of continuous functions that arise, for example, as Kolmogorov equations associated to the infinite-dimensional lifting of path-dependent SDEs. We investigate existence of smooth solutions through their representation via forward-backward stochastic systems, for which we provide the necessary regularity theory. Because of the lack of smoothing properties of the parabolic operators at hand, solutions in general will only share the same regularity as the coefficients of the equation. To conclude we exhibit an application to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations associated to suitable optimal control problems.

Optimal control of stochastic phase-field models related to tumor growth

We study a stochastic phase-field model for tumor growth dynamics coupling a stochastic Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor phase parameter with a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation governing the nutrient proportion. We prove strong well-posedness of the system in a general framework through monotonicity and stochastic compactness arguments. We introduce then suitable controls representing the concentration of cytotoxic drugs administered in medical treatment and we analyze a related optimal control problem. We derive existence of an optimal strategy and deduce first-order necessary optimality conditions by studying the corresponding linearized system and the backward adjoint system.

Large deviations for interacting particle systems: joint mean-field and small-noise limit

We consider a system of stochastic interacting particles in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and we describe large deviations asymptotics in a joint mean-field and small-noise limit. Precisely, a large deviations principle (LDP) is established for the empirical measure and the stochastic current, as the number of particles tends to infinity and the noise vanishes, simultaneously. We give a direct proof of the LDP using tilting and subsequently exploiting the link between entropy and large deviations. To this aim we employ consistency of suitable deterministic control problems associated to the stochastic dynamics.

A variational approach to the mean field planning problem

We investigate a first-order mean field planning problem of the form \begin{equation} \left\lbrace\begin{aligned} -\partial_t u + H(x,Du) &= f(x,m) &&\text{in } (0,T)\times \mathbb{R}^d, \\ \partial_t m - \nabla\cdot (m\,H_p(x,Du)) &= 0 &&\text{in }(0,T)\times \mathbb{R}^d,\\ m(0,\cdot) = m_0, \; m(T,\cdot) &= m_T &&\text{in } \mathbb{R}^d, \end{aligned}\right. \end{equation} associated to a convex Hamiltonian $H$ with quadratic growth and a monotone interaction term $f$ with polynomial growth. We exploit the variational structure of the system, which encodes the first order optimality condition of a convex dynamic optimal entropy-transport problem with respect to the unknown density $m$ and of its dual, involving the maximization of an integral functional among all the subsolutions $u$ of an Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Combining ideas from optimal transport, convex analysis and renormalized solutions to the continuity equation, we will prove existence and (at least partial) uniqueness of a weak solution $(m,u)$. A crucial step of our approach relies on a careful analysis of distributional subsolutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations of the form $-\partial_t u + H(x,Du) \leq α$, under minimal summability conditions on $α$, and to a measure-theoretic description of the optimality via a suitable contact-defect measure. Finally, using the superposition principle, we are able to describe the solution to the system by means of a measure on the path space encoding the local behavior of the players.

Mean-field optimal control as Gamma-limit of finite agent controls

This paper focuses on the role of a government of a large population of interacting agents as a mean field optimal control problem derived from deterministic finite agent dynamics. The control problems are constrained by a PDE of continuity-type without diffusion, governing the dynamics of the probability distribution of the agent population. We derive existence of optimal controls in a measure-theoretical setting as natural limits of finite agent optimal controls without any assumption on the regularity of control competitors. In particular, we prove the consistency of mean-field optimal controls with corresponding underlying finite agent ones. The results follow from a $Γ$-convergence argument constructed over the mean-field limit, which stems from leveraging the superposition principle.

Singular Stochastic Allen-Cahn equations with dynamic boundary conditions

We prove a well-posedness result for stochastic Allen-Cahn type equations in a bounded domain coupled with generic boundary conditions. The (nonlinear) flux at the boundary aims at describing the interactions with the hard walls and is motivated by some recent literature in physics. The singular character of the drift part allows for a large class of maximal monotone operators, generalizing the usual double-well potentials. One of the main novelties of the paper is the absence of any growth condition on the drift term of the evolution, neither on the domain nor on the boundary. A well-posedness result for variational solutions of the system is presented using a priori estimates as well as monotonicity and compactness techniques. A vanishing viscosity argument for the dynamic on the boundary is also presented.

Ergodic maximum principle for stochastic systems

We present a version of the stochastic maximum principle (SMP) for ergodic control problems. In particular we give necessary (and sufficient) conditions for optimality for controlled dissipative systems in finite dimensions. The strategy we employ is mainly built on duality techniques. We are able to construct a dual process for all positive times via the analysis of a suitable class of perturbed linearized forward equations. We show that such a process is the unique bounded solution to a Backward SDE on infinite horizon from which we can write a version of the SMP.

Stochastic maximum principle for SPDEs with delay

In this paper we develop necessary conditions for optimality, in the form of the Pontryagin maximum principle, for the optimal control problem of a class of infinite dimensional evolution equations with delay in the state. In the cost functional we allow the final cost to depend on the history of the state. To treat such kind of cost functionals we introduce a new form of anticipated backward stochastic differential equations which plays the role of dual equation associated to the control problem.

Necessary stochastic maximum principle for dissipative systems on infinite time horizon

We develop a necessary stochastic maximum principle for a finite-dimensional stochastic control problem in infinite horizon under a polynomial growth and joint monotonicity assumption on the coefficients. The second assumption generalizes the usual one in the sense that it is formulated as a joint condition for the drift and the diffusion term. The main difficulties concern the construction of the first and second order adjoint processes by solving backward equations on an unbounded time interval. The first adjoint process is characterized as a solution to a backward SDE, which is well-posed thanks to a duality argument. The second one can be defined via another duality relation written in terms of the Hamiltonian of the system and linearized state equation. Some known models verifying the joint monotonicity assumption are discussed as well.
