Phase resolved measurements of stimulated emission

The development of the semiconductor quantum cascade laser (QCL) [1] has enabled bright coherent sources operating at frequencies between the optical (>100 THz) and electronic (<0.5 THz) ranges opening this frequency region for fundamental science investigations [2-5] as well as for applications [6]. However, detailed information about the internal processes in QCLs and their ultrafast dynamics are needed for their further development towards high output power, longer wavelengths and stable pulsed operation. We introduce a novel approach to study the gain and dynamics of a terahertz (THz) QCL [7] using phase resolved measurements of the stimulated emission. This is enabled by direct recording of the emitted electric field with <100 fs time resolution. For the case of the THz QCL we demonstrate the validity of the quantum mechanical description of the laser. We show for the first time the real bandwidth of the terahertz gain medium, the current dependence of this gain, and the losses associated with the wave propagation in the laser waveguide.

Photovoltaic Probe of Cavity Polaritons in a Quantum Cascade Structure

The strong coupling between an intersubband excitation in a quantum cascade structure and a photonic mode of a planar microcavity has been detected by angle-resolved photovoltaic measurements. A typical anticrossing behavior, with a vacuum-field Rabi splitting of 16 meV at 78K, has been measured, for an intersubband transition at 163 meV. These results show that the strong coupling regime between photons and intersubband excitations can be engineered in a quantum cascade opto-electronic device. They also demonstrate the possibility to perform angle-resolved mid-infrared photodetection and to develop active devices based on intersubband cavity polaritons.

High power spatial single-mode quantum cascade lasers at 8.9 $μ$m

High performance of InP-based quantum cascade lasers emitting at $λ$ ~ 9$μ$m are reported. Thick electroplated gold layer was deposited on top of the laser to improve heat dissipation. With one facet high reflection coated, the devices produce a maximum output power of 175mW at 40% duty cycle at room temperature and continuous-wave operation up to 278K.

Interplay between disorder and intersubband collective excitations in the two-dimensional electron gas

Intersubband absorption in modulation-doped quantum wells is usually appropriately described as a collective excitation of the confined two-dimensional electron gas. At sufficiently low electron density and low temperatures, however, the in-plane disorder potential is able to damp the collective modes by mixing the intersubband charge-density excitation with single-particle localized modes. Here we show experimental evidence of this transition. The results are analyzed within the framework of the density functional theory and highlight the impact of the interplay between disorder and the collective response of the two-dimensional electron gas in semiconductor heterostructures.

Expected Shortfall as a Tool for Financial Risk Management

We study the properties of Expected Shortfall from the point of view of financial risk management. This measure --- which emerges as a natural remedy in some cases where Value at Risk (VaR) is not able to distinguish portfolios which bear different levels of risk --- is indeed shown to have much better properties than VaR. We show in fact that unlike VaR this variable is in general subadditive and therefore it is a Coherent Measure of Risk in the sense of reference (artzner)
