Analytic backreaction of a scalar wig on a Schwarzschild black hole

We analytically determine the leading backreaction of a spherically symmetric massive complex scalar quasi-bound state (with mass $μ$) on a Schwarzschild black hole with (initial) gravitational radius $r_0$. Working in the small-coupling regime, $r_0 μ\ll 1$, we evaluate the stress-energy tensor of the fundamental scalar $s$-wave and solve the Einstein equations through quadratic order in its amplitude in ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. We also determine the small-mass quasi-resonant frequency of the fundamental $s$-wave analytically by matched asymptotic expansions and validate it numerically using Leaver's method. Unlike steady-state treatments, the calculation retains the exponential decay of the quasi-bound state. We obtain explicit expressions for the metric perturbations and Misner-Sharp mass and derive the evolution of the future outer trapping horizon. The black-hole mass grows monotonically with the decaying horizon flux and saturates when the finite scalar cloud has been absorbed, with the decrease of the cloud mass exactly balancing the horizon growth at the perturbative order considered. We also determine the domain in which the scalar small-coupling approximation and the gravitational perturbative expansion are simultaneously valid.

Two shadows of a single black hole: Vacuum birefringence phenomena within Einstein-nonlinear-electrodynamics

One of the main features of nonlinear electrodynamics is the existence of an effective geometry that describes the geodesic motion of photons. A detailed analysis of the properties of effective geometry is of utmost importance for a better understanding of nonlinear electrodynamics theories and their possible imprints on physics, especially in the context of black holes. We consider a nonlinear electrodynamics model that depends on the two electromagnetic scalar invariants and obtain that the motion of photons in nonlinear electrodynamics exhibits \textit{vacuum birefringence}, i.e., photons can propagate along two distinct paths, depending on their polarization. As a consequence of this phenomenon, we show that static black hole solutions sourced by nonlinear electrodynamics can admit two distinct unstable light rings, leading to the formation of two distinct shadows. Moreover, to explore the potential astrophysical relevance of our results, we also compare them with the astrophysical observations for the shadow radius of Sagittarius A*. We place upper limits on the charge-to-mass ratio of the nonlinear electrodynamics-sourced black hole. We also show that the motion of photons in this context can be interpreted as nongeodesic curves subjected to a four-force term from the perspective of an observer in the spacetime metric, generalizing previous results in the literature for nonlinear electrodynamics models that depend on a single electromagnetic scalar invariant.

Spontaneous spherical symmetry breaking of black holes with resonant hair

Black holes with resonant hair are static, spherical, electrically charged solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-(gauged-)scalar system. Scalar self-interactions are mandatory for their existence. Initial dynamical studies restricted to spherical symmetry suggested stability; more recently, fully non-spherical dynamical studies revealed instabilities, at least for a particular class of self-interactions. Here, we provide a more detailed study of this instability together with a different decay channel, depending on the chosen solutions. Moreover, considering a second model, we provide evidence that the instabilities may be generic for different classes of self-interactions. We conclude these solutions are dynamically unstable and split into a bosonic lump and a bald black hole (via fission) or implode to the latter (via absorption). In both cases, the non-spherical dynamics seems to be key.

Electromagnetic duality degeneracy in dynamical black hole mergers

Electromagnetic duality is a symmetry of the source-free Einstein-Maxwell equations that rotates electric and magnetic fields while leaving the stress-energy tensor invariant. We present the first fully nonlinear realization of this symmetry in dynamical strong-gravity regimes by performing numerical relativity simulations of charged black hole mergers across a continuous duality family. Starting from electrically charged binaries, we generate dyonic and magnetically charged configurations via duality rotations and evolve them within a common numerical framework. We find that all dual configurations exhibit identical spacetime dynamics, while the emitted electromagnetic radiation is related by a rotation of its polarization equal to the duality angle. Our results demonstrate a degeneracy of gravitational observables under electromagnetic duality and provide a concrete mapping between dual configurations at the level of radiation, establishing electromagnetic duality as an organizing principle for dynamical Einstein-Maxwell solutions.

Vacuum, ma non troppo: hidden matter distribution in symmetry-transformed electrovacuum spacetimes

We analyse two static spacetimes, recently generated from a Schwarzschild--Bertotti--Robinson electrovacuum seed through distinct symmetry transformations. The electromagnetic field of the transformed solutions can be set to zero and both solutions were presented as vacuum solutions of General Relativity. However, we show that once recast in Weyl form, both metrics are seen to be supported by a semi-infinite annular mass distribution on the equatorial plane. Thus, these metrics harbour a hidden matter source, visible in Weyl coordinates. In the original Schwarzschild-like coordinates equatorial null geodesics reach spatial infinity ($r\to\infty$) in finite affine parameter. In the Weyl representation, these geodesics approach the inner edge of the annulus, where the coordinate map degenerates.

Splitting the Gravitational Atom: Instabilities of Black Holes with Synchronized or Resonant Hair

Black holes (BHs) with synchronized bosonic hair challenge the Kerr paradigm, linking superradiance from ultralight fields -- creating gravitational atoms -- to bosonic stars across parameter space. In the ''very hairy'' regime, where a small horizon lies inside a bosonic star containing most of the energy, they deviate sharply from Kerr, but their dynamics remain unexplored. We show that for such solutions the horizon gets naturally ejected from the center of its scalar environment, and observe a similar dynamics in a cousin model of BHs with resonant scalar hair, albeit with a different fate. This dynamical splitting is likely to be generic for sufficiently hairy BHs in the broader class of models with synchronized or resonant hair, but possible exceptions may exist.

There and back again: Outspiraling motion in non-Kerr compact objects

In Keplerian dynamics, a test body orbiting a point particle in circular motion has a monotonically increasing frequency, with decreasing radius. If a dissipative channel is introduced, such as gravitational wave (GW) emission, under the quadrupole approximation, the corresponding GW strain has an ever-increasing frequency with time. A similar statement holds for equatorial motion of a test particle on the Kerr manifold, except such inspiral is cut off at the ISCO, wherein stable circular orbits cease to exist and a plunge is expected. We analyze circular timelike orbits in generic spinning spacetimes and study the conditions in which exotic motion can occur, due to the presence of non-Kerr features. In particular, we derive conditions under which an inspiral towards a compact object is naturally followed by an outspiral motion, and give concrete examples as well as the corresponding GW phenomenology. This analysis serves both as a theoretical exploration of non-Kerrness as well as an example of a concrete smoking gun of exotic spacetimes.

Spherical Einstein-Friedberg-Lee-Sirlin boson stars: Self-interacting solutions and their astrophysical appearance

We investigate boson stars within the framework of the self-interacting Einstein-Friedberg-Lee-Sirlin (E-FLS) model, constituted by a complex scalar field with a quartic self-interaction and a real scalar field. Our analysis explores the family of static solutions across a broad range of parameters, including the self-interaction of the complex scalar field. We obtain that positive self-interaction terms increase the maximum mass and compactness of E-FLS stars, allowing them to reach masses comparable to the Chandrasekhar limit without the need of ultralight bosonic masses. Moreover, in the limit where the real scalar field becomes massless, the solutions present larger effective radii and allow a broader range of stable solutions. Astrophysical images, generated via backward ray-tracing, show that these compact, self-interacting E-FLS stars produce strong gravitational lensing, yielding shadows that could visually mimic black holes, thus providing potential observational signatures detectable in ongoing electromagnetic surveys.

Twisting shadows: Light rings, lensing and shadows of black holes in swirling universes

Using the Ernst formalism, a novel solution of vacuum general relativity (GR) was recently obtained [1], describing a Schwarzschild black hole (BH) immersed in a nonasymptotically flat rotating background, dubbed swirling universe, with the peculiar property that north and south hemispheres spin in opposite directions. We investigate the null geodesic flow and, in particular, the existence of light rings in this vacuum geometry. By evaluating the total topological charge $w$, we show that there exists one unstable light ring ($w=-1$) for each rotation sense of the background. We observe that the swirling background drives the Schwarzschild BH light rings outside the equatorial plane, displaying counterrotating motion with respect to each other, while (both) corotating with respect to the swirling universe. Using backwards ray tracing, we obtain the shadow and gravitational lensing effects, revealing a novel feature for observers on the equatorial plane: the BH shadow displays an odd $\mathbb{Z}_2$ (north-south) symmetry, inherited from the same type of symmetry of the spacetime itself: a twisted shadow.

Generalised Harrison transformations and black diholes in Einstein-ModMax

Einstein-Maxwell theory has powerful solution generating techniques which include Harrison transformations in the Ernst formalism. We construct generalized Harrison transformations that preserve the purely magnetic or purely electric sector in Einstein-ModMax (EMM) theory. Thus, they serve as solution generating techniques within these sectors for this model of non-linear electrodynamics minimally coupled to gravity. As an application we rederive several known exact solutions of EMM and a new solution, black diholes, describing two extremal BHs in equilibrium, with opposite magnetic charges, whose attraction is balanced by their embedding in the Melvin magnetic universe of this model. As a further generalization, we consider Einstein-dilaton-ModMax theory, and provide the extremal charged BHs and black diholes also in this model.

Light rings on stationary axisymmetric spacetimes: blind to the topology and able to coexist

It has been established that Black Hole (BH) spacetimes obeying some general set of assumptions always possess, at least, one light ring (per rotation sense) [arXiv:2003.06445]. This theorem was originally established for asymptotically flat, stationary, axial symmetric, 1+3 dimensional circular spacetimes harbouring a non-extremal and topologically spherical Killing horizon. Following the mantra that a theorem is only as strong as its assumptions in this work we extend this theorem to non topologically spherical (toroidal) BHs and to spacetimes harbouring more than one BH. As in [arXiv:2003.06445], we show that each BH still contributes with, at least, one LR (per rotation sense).

Good tachyons, bad bradyons: role reversal in Einstein-nonlinear-electrodynamics models

In relativistic mechanics, the 4-velocity and the 4-momentum need not be parallel. This allows their norm to have a different sign. This possibility occurs in nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) models minimally coupled to Einstein's theory. Surprisingly, for a large class of NED models with a Maxwell limit, for weak fields, the causal (acausal) photons, as determined by their 4-velocity, have a spacelike (timelike) 4-momentum, leading to good tachyons and bad bradyons. Departing from weak fields, this possibility is determined solely by the concavity of the NED Lagrangian, which is consistent with the Dominant Energy Condition analysis. As a corollary, some popular regular black hole solutions sourced by NED, such as the Bardeen and Hayward solutions, are acausal.

Exact multiblack hole spacetimes in Einstein-ModMax theory

Exact solutions describing multiple, electrically charged black holes (BHs) in a model of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLE) minimally coupled to Einstein's gravity are presented. The NLE model is ModMax theory, that has attracted much attention due to its duality and conformal invariance, features shared with standard (linear) electrodynamics. In the nonextremal case, the solution has conical singularities, similarly to the multi Reissner-Nordström solution in Einstein-Maxwell theory. In the extremal case the solution is regular on and outside the event horizon; it is isometric to the Majumdar-Papapetrou solution, although the individual BHs have a nonunitary charge to mass ratio, due to screening effects. Using the ModMax electromagnetic duality invariance, magnetically charged and dyonic generalizations are also obtained. Finally, we construct multi-BH solutions with a positive cosmological constant.

Gregory-Laflamme-type instability of boson strings and related phases in D=5 Kaluza-Klein theory

We add an $S^1$ extra dimension (size $L$) to the well known $D=4$ static, spherically symmetric $Q$-balls and boson stars. We show that the resulting uniform horizonless boson strings possess a static zero-mode for a critical value of $L$. This is at the threshold of a Gregory-Laflamme instability of these objects, occurring for larger values of $L$.The non-linear continuation of the zero-mode yields $D=5$ non-uniform boson strings. In addition, there are also intrinsic $D=5$ solutions describing localized boson stars on the $S^1$, supported by the contribution of the scalar field Kaluza-Klein modes. Basic properties of all three types of aforementioned solutions are discussed, together with their phase space.

Bifurcations in Bosonic Stars: chains and rings from spherical solutions

We study the bifurcation phenomena between spherical and axisymmetric bosonic stars. By numerically solving for the zero-modes of spherical bosonic stars under specific axially symmetric perturbations, we discover that excited state spherical bosonic stars bifurcate into two types of axisymmetric bosonic stars under $\ell=2$ perturbations, with matter distributions resembling chains and rings, respectively. Meanwhile, $\ell=4$ axisymmetric perturbations lead spherical scalar bosonic stars to bifurcate into a new type of axisymmetric bosonic stars, exhibiting a mixed chain-like and ring-like matter distribution, which we refer to as gyroscope-like. Additionally, for the first time, we have constructed chains of scalar bosonic stars with 7 constituents and their corresponding ring-like scalar bosonic stars. Our results provide an explanation for the bifurcations in bosonic stars from the perspective of perturbations, and by analyzing physical quantities such as quadrupoles and energy densities we systematically discuss the impact of axisymmetric perturbations on spherical bosonic stars.

Spinning generalizations of Majumdar-Papapetrou multi-black hole spacetimes: light rings, lensing and shadows

A generalization of the Majumdar-Papapetrou multi-black hole spacetime was recently constructed by Teo and Wan [1], describing charged and spinning (extremal) balanced black holes in asymptotically flat spacetime. We explore the dynamics of null geodesics on this geometry, focusing on the two-center solution. Using the topological charge formalism, we show that various light ring arrangements arise from different choices of individual angular momenta: light rings with opposite topological charges can merge and annihilate each other, resulting in configurations with a total of 4, 6, or 8 light rings. Using backward ray-tracing, we obtained the shadow and lensing of these spacetimes. The former, in particular, closely resembles those for the double-Kerr metric.

Black holes in scalar multipolar Universes

Recently, a scalar counterpart of the Schwarzschild-Melvin Universe was reported [arXiv:2410.02851]. We show this solution is a special case of a Schwarzschild black hole/mass in a scalar multipolar Universe, that can be constructed algebraically combining known vacuum solutions. This builds on the generalized Weyl construction for scalar-vacuum, that admits two, fully decoupled, independent harmonic functions: one for the gravitational sector and another for the scalar sector. Harmonic solutions with growing multipoles lead to naked singularities (at spatial infinity), including for the scalar counterpart of the Schwarzschild-Melvin; harmonic solutions with decaying (scalar) multipoles are asymptotically flat, but have a singular horizon, in accordance with no-scalar-hair theorems. The scalar-vacuum model can be mapped to a five dimensional pure gravity construction via Kaluza-Klein oxidization and, in this way, to the corresponding $D=5$ generalized Weyl construction.

Breaking the north-south symmetry: dyonic spinning black holes with synchronized gauged scalar hair

We study stationary clouds of a gauged, complex scalar field on a magnetically (and possibly electrically as well) charged Kerr-Newman black hole (BH). The existence of a magnetic charge $Q_m$ promotes a north-south $\textit{asymmetry}$ of the scalar clouds. This breakdown of the clouds' $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry carries through to the spacetime $\textit{geometry}$ for the non-linear continuation of the clouds: a family of magnetically charged (or dyonic) BHs with synchronized gauged scalar hair, which we construct. Their distinct phenomenology is illustrated by their imaging, exhibiting skewed shadows and lensing. Such hairy BHs could, in principle, result from the superradiant instability of magnetically charged Kerr-Newman BHs, unveiling a dynamical mechanism for creating north-south asymmetric BHs from standard $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric electrovacuum BHs.
