Coherence and broadening effects in medium induced gluon radiation

Interferences between different emitters in the multi-parton shower is the building block of QCD jet physics in vacuum. The presence of a hot medium made of quarks and gluons is expected to alter this interference pattern. To study such effects, we derive the gluon emission spectrum off an "asymptotic quark" traversing a hot and dense QCD medium at first order in the medium density. The resulting induced gluon distribution gets modified when the new interference terms between the initial and final quark are included. We comment on the possible phenomenological consequences of this new contribution for jet observables in heavy-ion collisions.

Interference between initial and final state radiation in a QCD medium

We investigate the color coherence pattern between initial and final state radiation in the presence of a QCD medium. We derive the medium-induced gluon spectrum of an "asymptotic" parton which suffers a hard scattering and subsequently crosses the medium. The angular distribution of the induced gluon spectrum is modified when one includes interference terms between the incoming and the outgoing parton at finite angle between them. The coherent, incoherent and soft limits of the medium-induced gluon spectrum are studied. In the soft limit, we provide a simple and intuitive probabilistic picture which could be of interest for Monte Carlo implementations. The configuration studied here may have phenomenological consequences in high energy nuclear collisions.

In-medium antenna radiation in t-channel

The color coherence effects in the medium modification to the initial state radiation are studied via a simple setup which allows these effects to be pronounced. The medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum off a hard quark which suffers a highly virtual photon scattering and subsequently crosses a dilute QCD medium of finite size is obtained. The angular distribution of the medium-induced gluon radiation spectrum is modified when the interference contributions between the incoming and outgoing quarks at a finite scattering angle are included.

Medium-induced soft gluon radiation in DIS

We study color coherence effects on the medium-induced soft gluon radiation off an asymptotic quark hit by a virtual photon traversing a hot and dense QCD medium. The transverse momentum spectrum of the emitted gluon is computed at 1st order in the opacity expansion. The interference effects between the initial and final state radiation modify the soft gluon spectrum when a finite angle between the incoming and outgoing quarks is considered, presenting a soft divergence. We comment on possible implications on observables in eA collisions.

The radiation pattern of a QCD antenna in a dense medium

We calculate the radiation spectrum off a qq-bar pair of a fixed opening angle theta_qq-bar traversing a medium of length L. Multiple interactions with the medium are handled in the harmonic oscillator approximation, valid for soft gluon emissions. We discuss the time-scales relevant to the decoherence of correlated partons traversing the medium and demonstrate how this relates to the hard scale that govern medium-induced radiation. For large angle radiation, the hard scale is given by Qhard = max(r_perp^{-1}, Qs), where r_perp = theta_qq-bar L is the probed transverse size and Qs is the maximal transverse momentum accumulated by the emitted gluon in the medium. These situations define in turn two distinct regimes, which we call "dipole" and "decoherence" regimes, respectively, and which are discussed in detail. A feature common to both cases is that coherence of the radiation is restored at large transverse momenta, k_\perp > Qhard.

Impact-parameter dependent nuclear parton distribution functions: EPS09s and EKS98s and their applications in nuclear hard processes

We determine the spatial (impact parameter) dependence of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) using the $A$-dependence of the spatially independent (averaged) global fits EPS09 and EKS98. We work under the assumption that the spatial dependence can be formulated as a power series of the nuclear thickness functions $T_A$. To reproduce the $A$-dependence over the entire $x$ range we need terms up to $[T_A]^4$. As an outcome, we release two sets, EPS09s (LO, NLO, error sets) and EKS98s, of spatially dependent nPDFs for public use. We also discuss the implementation of these into the existing calculations. With our results, the centrality dependence of nuclear hard-process observables can be studied consistently with the globally fitted nPDFs for the first time. As an application, we first calculate the LO nuclear modification factor $R^{1jet}_{AA}$ for primary partonic-jet production in different centrality classes in Au+Au collisions at RHIC and Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. Also the corresponding central-to-peripheral ratios $R_{CP}^{1jet}$ are studied. We also calculate the LO and NLO nuclear modification factors for single inclusive neutral pion production, $R_{dAu}^{π^0}$, at mid- and forward rapidities in different centrality classes in d+Au collisions at RHIC. In particular, we show that our results are compatible with the PHENIX mid-rapidity data within the overall normalization uncertainties given by the experiment. Finally, we show our predictions for the corresponding modifications $R_{pPb}^{π^0}$ in the forthcoming p+Pb collisions at LHC.

The radiation pattern of a QCD antenna in a dilute medium

Radiative interferences in the multi-parton shower is the building block of QCD jet physics in vacuum. The presence of a hot medium made of quarks and gluons is expected to alter this interference pattern. To study these effects, we derive the gluon emission spectrum off a color-correlated quark-antiquark pair (antenna) traversing a colored medium to first order in the medium density. The resulting induced gluon distribution is found to be governed by the hardest scale of the problem. In our setup, this can either be the inverse antenna transverse size, $r_\perp^{-1}$, or the scale related to the transverse color correlation length in the medium, which is given by the Debye mass $m_D$. This emerging scale opens the angular phase space of emissions off the antenna compared to the vacuum case and gives rise to a typical transverse momentum of the medium-induced emitted gluons, $ _{\text{med}}\sim \text{max}(r_\perp^{-1},m_D)$. Above the hard scale interference effects suppress the spectrum resulting in the restoration of vacuum coherence.

Coherence effects and broadening in medium-induced QCD radiation off a massive $q {\bar q}$ antenna

Studies of medium-induced QCD radiation usually rely on the calculation of single-gluon radiation spectrum off an energetic parton traversing an extended colored medium. Recently, the importance of interference effects between emitters in the medium has been explored. In this work we extend previous studies by calculating the single-gluon coherent spectrum off an antenna consisting of a massive quark-antiquark pair. Interferences dominate the spectrum of soft gluons, which are mainly emitted outside of the cone made by the antenna opening angle, while the antenna results in a superposition of independent emitters above a critical gluon energy scale. We study the interplay between the dead-cone effect and medium-induced jet broadening in both cases of soft and hard gluons and present results on energy loss distributions.

Hard Probes of the Quark Gluon Plasma in Heavy Ion Collisions

The medium-modifications of processes characterized by the presence of a hard scale provide the most diverse tools to characterize the properties of the matter created in high-energy nuclear collisions. Indeed, jet quenching, the suppression of particles produced at high transverse momentum, has been established at RHIC almost a decade ago as one of the main tools in heavy-ion collisions. The melting of quarkonia is expected to provide also information about the temperature and the properties of the produced medium. The beginning of the LHC era for hot QCD studies starts with the first nuclear beams in 2010. The amount of information produced by this first run is overwhelming: The three experiments with nuclear program (ALICE, ATLAS and CMS) have provide new results in basically all subjects considered in previous experiments and have also shown the potential to make nuclear collisions at the TeV scale for the first time. I will review what the results from both RHIC and LHC imply for our understanding of hot and dense QCD matter from a theorists' perspective and how these new results change some of the concepts we developed in the last years. Particular attention is devoted to the case of jets, as the first data recently published from the LHC and the limitations of previous approaches call for a new theory of jets in a medium.

The physics potential of proton-nucleus collisions at the TeV scale

The LHC brings nuclear collisions to the TeV scale for the first time and the first data show the qualitative differences of this new regime. The corresponding phase-space available encompasses completely uncharted regions of QCD in which high-density or high-temperature domains can be identified. Proton-nucleus runs are essential for a complete interpretation of the data and for the study of new regimes dominated by large occupation numbers in the hadronic wave function. I comment here the physics opportunities for p+Pb runs at the LHC and d+Au runs at RHIC and the corresponding needs in view of the new Pb+Pb data from the LHC.

Broadening in Medium-induced QCD Radiation off a $q {\bar q}$ Antenna

In this contribution, the one-gluon radiation spectrum off a massive quark-antiquark ($q {\bar q}$) antenna traversing a QCD medium is calculated in the eikonal approximation. The interference between emissions from the quark and the antiquark is considered. The gluon spectrum computed at first order in the opacity expansion is collinear finite but infrared divergent, which is in contrast with the result obtained from an independent emitter which is both infrared and collinear finite. Phenomenological consequences on the broadening of the emitted gluon are investigated. In the soft gluon emission limit, the interference between emitters causes a different broadening style from the typical {\bf k}-broadening in the case of an independent emitter.

Onset of color decoherence for soft gluon radiation in medium

We report on recent studies of the phenomenon of color decoherence in jets in QCD media. The effect is most clearly observed in the radiation pattern of a quark-antiquark antenna, created in the same quantum state, traversing a dense color deconfined plasma. Multiple scattering with the medium color charges gradually destroys the coherence of the antenna. In the limit of opaque media this ultimately leads to independent radiation off the antenna constituents. Accordingly, radiation off the total charge vanishes implying a memory loss effect induced by the medium.

AAMQS: a non-linear QCD description of new HERA data at small-x

We present a global analysis of available data on inclusive structure functions measured in electron-proton scattering at small values of Bjorken-x, including the latest data from the combined HERA analysis on reduced cross sections. Our approach relies on the dipole formulation of DIS together with the use of the non-linear running coupling BK equation for the description of the small-x dynamics. With the resulting parametrization we are able to describe the latest FL data measured by the H1 collaboration. Further, we discuss the kinematical domain where significant deviations from NLO-DGLAP should be expected and the ability of non-linnear physics to account for such deviations.

Mass effect and coherence in medium-induced QCD radiation off a $q {\bar q}$ antenna

The medium-induced one-gluon radiation spectrum off a massive quark-antiquark ($q {\bar q}$) antenna traversing a colored QCD medium is calculated in this contribution. The gluon spectrum off the antenna computed at first order in the opacity expansion is collinear finite but infrared divergent, which is different from the result obtained from an independent emitter which is both infrared and collinear finite. The interference between emitters dominates the soft gluon radiation when the antenna opening angle is small and the emitted gluon is soft, whereas the antenna behaves like a superposition of independent emitters when the opening angle is large and the radiated gluon is hard. As a phenomenological consequence, we investigate the energy lost by the projectiles due to the radiation. In general, the size of the mass effects is similar in both cases.

Medium-induced multi-photon radiation

We study the spectrum of multi-photon radiation off a fast quark in medium in the BDMPS/ASW approach. We reproduce the medium-induced one-photon radiation spectrum in dipole approximation, and go on to calculate the two-photon radiation in the Molière limit. We find that in this limit the LPM effect holds for medium-induced two-photon ladder emission.

Inclusive prompt photon production in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC

Nuclear modification factors of inclusive prompt photon production in d-Au collisions at RHIC and p-Pb collisions at the LHC are provided at different rapidities. The calculations are performed at NLO accuracy using the EPS09 NLO nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) and their error sets. The results are compared to the ones obtained with the nDS and HKN07 NLO nPDFs, and to the corresponding nuclear modification factors of neutral pion production in these collisions. The sensitivity of these results to the scale choice is also investigated. Interestingly, the predictions using the different nPDF sets differ from each other to the extent that this observable can be expected to become very useful for probing nPDFs over a wide range of Bjorken-x. In order to obtain a perturbative QCD baseline in heavy-ion collisions, calculations are carried out for minimum bias Au-Au collisions at RHIC and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We also estimate the maximal possible suppression which the produced QCD matter can be expected to have on inclusive prompt photon production due to the quenching of the fragmentation component. The nuclear modification factor for prompt photon production is thus suggested to be used for gauging both the cold and the hot nuclear matter effects on other hard processes which are expected to be affected by quark-gluon plasma formation, such as large-pT hadron and jet production.

Antiangular Ordering of Gluon Radiation in QCD Media

We investigate angular and energy distributions of medium-induced gluon emission off a quark-antiquark antenna in the framework of perturbative QCD as an attempt toward understanding, from first principles, jet evolution inside the quark-gluon plasma. In-medium color coherence between emitters, neglected in all previous calculations, leads to a novel mechanism of soft-gluon radiation. The structure of the corresponding spectrum, in contrast with known medium-induced radiation, retains some properties of the vacuum case; in particular, it exhibits a soft divergency. However, as opposed to the vacuum, the collinear singularity is regulated by the pair opening angle, leading to a strict angular separation between vacuum and medium-induced radiation, denoted as antiangular ordering. We comment on the possible consequences of this new contribution for jet observables in heavy-ion collisions.
