Equivalence of finite non-deterministic logical matrices is undecidable

The notion of a non-deterministic logical matrix (where connectives are interpreted as multi-functions) extends the traditional semantics for propositional logics based on logical matrices (where connectives are interpreted as functions). This extension allows for finitely characterizing a much wider class of logics, and has proven decisive in a myriad of recent compositionality results. In this paper we show that the added expressivity brought by non-determinism also has its drawbacks, and in particular that the problem of determining whether two given finite non-deterministic matrices are equivalent, in the sense that they induce the same logic, becomes undecidable. We also discuss some workable sufficient conditions and particular cases, namely regarding rexpansion homomorphisms and bridges to calculi.

Some more theorems on structural entailment relations and non-deterministic semantics

We extend classical work by Janusz Czelakowski on the closure properties of the class of matrix models of entailment relations - nowadays more commonly called multiple-conclusion logics - to the setting of non-deterministic matrices (Nmatrices), characterizing the Nmatrix models of an arbitrary logic through a generalization of the standard class operators to the non-deterministic setting. We highlight the main differences that appear in this more general setting, in particular: the possibility to obtain Nmatrix quotients using any compatible equivalence relation (not necessarily a congruence); the problem of determining when strict homomorphisms preserve the logic of a given Nmatrix; the fact that the operations of taking images and preimages cannot be swapped, which determines the exact sequence of operators that generates, from any complete semantics, the class of all Nmatrix models of a logic. Many results, on the other hand, generalize smoothly to the non-deterministic setting: we show for instance that a logic is finitely based if and only if both the class of its Nmatrix models and its complement are closed under ultraproducts. We conclude by mentioning possible developments in adapting the Abstract Algebraic Logic approach to logics induced by Nmatrices and the associated equational reasoning over non-deterministic algebras.

Modular many-valued semantics for combined logics

We obtain, for the first time, a modular many-valued semantics for combined logics, which is built directly from many-valued semantics for the logics being combined, by means of suitable universal operations over partial non-deterministic logical matrices. Our constructions preserve finite-valuedness in the context of multiple-conclusion logics whereas, unsurprisingly, it may be lost in the context of single-conclusion logics. Besides illustrating our constructions over a wide range of examples, we also develop concrete applications of our semantic characterizations, namely regarding the semantics of strengthening a given many-valued logic with additional axioms, the study of conditions under which a given logic may be seen as a combination of simpler syntactically defined fragments whose calculi can be obtained independently and put together to form a calculus for the whole logic, and also general conditions for decidability to be preserved by the combination mechanism.

Monadicity of Non-deterministic Logical Matrices is Undecidable

The notion of non-deterministic logical matrix (where connectives are interpreted as multi-functions) preserves many good properties of traditional semantics based on logical matrices (where connectives are interpreted as functions) whilst finitely characterizing a much wider class of logics, and has proven to be decisive in a myriad of recent compositional results in logic. Crucially, when a finite non-deterministic matrix satisfies monadicity (distinct truth-values can be separated by unary formulas) one can automatically produce an axiomatization of the induced logic. Furthermore, the resulting calculi are analytical and enable algorithmic proof-search and symbolic counter-model generation. For finite (deterministic) matrices it is well known that checking monadicity is decidable. We show that, in the presence of non-determinism, the property becomes undecidable. As a consequence, we conclude that there is no algorithm for computing the set of all multi-functions expressible in a given finite Nmatrix. The undecidability result is obtained by reduction from the halting problem for deterministic counter machines.

On axioms and rexpansions

We study the general problem of strengthening the logic of a given (partial) (non-deterministic) matrix with a set of axioms, using the idea of rexpansion. We obtain two characterization methods: a very general but not very effective one, and then an effective method which only applies under certain restrictions on the given semantics and the shape of the axioms. We show that this second method covers a myriad of examples in the literature. Finally, we illustrate how to obtain analytic multiple-conclusion calculi for the resulting logics.

A Robust Reputation-based Group Ranking System and its Resistance to Bribery

The spread of online reviews and opinions and its growing influence on people's behavior and decisions, boosted the interest to extract meaningful information from this data deluge. Hence, crowdsourced ratings of products and services gained a critical role in business and governments. Current state-of-the-art solutions rank the items with an average of the ratings expressed for an item, with a consequent lack of personalization for the users, and the exposure to attacks and spamming/spurious users. Using these ratings to group users with similar preferences might be useful to present users with items that reflect their preferences and overcome those vulnerabilities. In this paper, we propose a new reputation-based ranking system, utilizing multipartite rating subnetworks, which clusters users by their similarities using three measures, two of them based on Kolmogorov complexity. We also study its resistance to bribery and how to design optimal bribing strategies. Our system is novel in that it reflects the diversity of preferences by (possibly) assigning distinct rankings to the same item, for different groups of users. We prove the convergence and efficiency of the system. By testing it on synthetic and real data, we see that it copes better with spamming/spurious users, being more robust to attacks than state-of-the-art approaches. Also, by clustering users, the effect of bribery in the proposed multipartite ranking system is dimmed, comparing to the bipartite case.

What is a logical theory? On theories containing assertions and denials

The standard notion of formal theory, in Logic, is in general biased exclusively towards assertion: it commonly refers only to collections of assertions that any agent who accepts the generating axioms of the theory should also be committed to accept. In reviewing the main abstract approaches to the study of logical consequence, we point out why this notion of theory is unsatisfactory at multiple levels, and introduce a novel notion of theory that attacks the shortcomings of the received notion by allowing one to take both assertions and denials on a par. This novel notion of theory is based on a bilateralist approach to consequence operators, which we hereby introduce, and whose main properties we investigate in the present paper.

Combining fragments of classical logic: When are interaction principles needed?

We investigate the combination of fragments of classical logic as a way of conservatively extending a given Boolean logic by the addition of new connectives, and we precisely characterize the circumstances in which such a combination produces the corresponding fragment of classical logic over the signature containing connectives from both fragments given as input. If the thereby produced combined fragment is only incompletely characterized by the components given as input, this means that connectives from one component need to interact with connectives from the other component, giving rise to interaction principles. The main contributions strongly rely on the (well-known) description of the 2-valued clones made by Post, on the (not so well-known) axiomatization procedures for 2-valued matrices laid out by Rautenberg, and on Avron's non-deterministic matrices, which have (recently) been used to produce a significant advance on the understanding of the semantics of fibring.

Semi-BCI Algebras

The notion of semi-BCI algebras is introduced and some of its properties are investigated. This algebra is another generalization for BCI-algebras. It arises from the "intervalization" of BCI algebras. Semi-BCI have a similar structure to Pseudo-BCI algebras however they are not the same. In this paper we also provide an investigation on the similarity between these classes of algebras by showing how they relate to the process of intervalization.

Recommendation via matrix completion using Kolmogorov complexity

A usual way to model a recommendation system is as a matrix completion problem. There are several matrix completion methods, typically using optimization approaches or collaborative filtering. Most approaches assume that the matrix is either low rank, or that there are a small number of latent variables that encode the full problem. Here, we propose a novel matrix completion algorithm for recommendation systems, without any assumptions on the rank and that is model free, i.e., the entries are not assumed to be a function of some latent variables. Instead, we use a technique akin to information theory. Our method performs hybrid neighborhood-based collaborative filtering using Kolmogorov complexity. It decouples the matrix completion into a vector completion problem for each user. The recommendation for one user is thus independent of the recommendation for other users. This makes the algorithm scalable because the computations are highly parallelizable. Our results are competitive with state-of-the-art approaches on both synthetic and real-world dataset benchmarks.

Merging fragments of classical logic

We investigate the possibility of extending the non-functionally complete logic of a collection of Boolean connectives by the addition of further Boolean connectives that make the resulting set of connectives functionally complete. More precisely, we will be interested in checking whether an axiomatization for Classical Propositional Logic may be produced by merging Hilbert-style calculi for two disjoint incomplete fragments of it. We will prove that the answer to that problem is a negative one, unless one of the components includes only top-like connectives.

Robust reputation-based ranking on multipartite rating networks

We propose a new reputation-based ranking system utilizing multipartite rating subnetworks, that clusters users by their similarities, using Kolmogorov complexity. We prove the convergence and efficiency of the system and show that it copes better with spamming/spurious users, and it is more robust to attacks than state-of-the-art approaches.

Bivalent semantics, generalized compositionality and analytic classic-like tableaux for finite-valued logics

The paper is a contribution both to the theoretical foundations and to the actual construction of efficient automatizable proof procedures for non-classical logics. We focus here on the case of finite-valued logics, and exhibit: (i) a mechanism for producing a classic-like description of them in terms of an effective variety of bivalent semantics; (ii) a mechanism for extracting, from the bivalent semantics so obtained, uniform (classically-labeled) cut-free standard analytic tableaux with possibly branching invertible rules and paired with proof strategies designed to guarantee termination of the associated proof procedure; (iii) a mechanism to also provide, for the same logics, uniform cut-based tableau systems with linear rules. The latter tableau systems are shown to be adequate even when restricted to analytic cuts, and they are also shown to polynomially simulate truth-tables, a feature that is not enjoyed by the former standard type of tableau systems (not even in the 2-valued case). The results are based on useful generalizations of the notions of analyticity and compositionality, and illustrate a theory that applies to many other classes of non-classical logics.
