Multivariate Subresultants in Roots

We give rational expressions for the subresultants of n+1 generic polynomials f_1,..., f_{n+1} in n variables as a function of the coordinates of the common roots of f_1,..., f_n and their evaluation in f_{n+1}. We present a simple technique to prove our results, giving new proofs and generalizing the classical Poisson product formula for the projective resultant, as well as the expressions of Hong for univariate subresultants in roots.

Implicitization of rational surfaces using toric varieties

A parameterized surface can be represented as a projection from a certain toric surface. This generalizes the classical homogeneous and bihomogeneous parameterizations. We extend to the toric case two methods for computing the implicit equation of such a rational parameterized surface. The first approach uses resultant matrices and gives an exact determinantal formula for the implicit equation if the parameterization has no base points. In the case the base points are isolated local complete intersections, we show that the implicit equation can still be recovered by computing any non-zero maximal minor of this matrix. The second method is the toric extension of the method of moving surfaces, and involves finding linear and quadratic relations (syzygies) among the input polynomials. When there are no base points, we show that these can be put together into a square matrix whose determinant is the implicit equation. Its extension to the case where there are base points is also explored.

On the height of the Sylvester Resultant

Let n be a positive integer. We consider the Sylvester Resultant of f and g, where f is a generic polynomial of degree 2 or 3 and g is a generic polynomial of degree n. If f is a quadratic polynomial, we find the resultant's height. If f is a cubic polynomial, we find tight asymptotics for the resultant's height.

Subresultants and Generic Monomial Bases

Given n polynomials in n variables of respective degrees d_1,...,d_n, and a set of monomials of cardinality d_1...d_n, we give an explicit subresultant-based polynomial expression in the coefficients of the input polynomials whose non-vanishing is a necessary and sufficient condition for this set of monomials to be a basis of the ring of polynomials in n variables modulo the ideal generated by the system of polynomials. This approach allows us to clarify the algorithms for the Bezout construction of the resultant.

On the irreducibility of multivariate subresultants

Let $P_1,...,P_n$ be generic homogeneous polynomials in $n$ variables of degrees $d_1,...,d_n$ respectively. We prove that if $ν$ is an integer satisfying ${\sum_{i=1}^n d_i}-n+1-\min\{d_i\}<ν,$ then all multivariate subresultants associated to the family $P_1,...,P_n$ in degree $ν$ are irreducible. We show that the lower bound is sharp. As a byproduct, we get a formula for computing the residual resultant of $\binom{ρ-ν+n-1}{n-1}$ smooth isolated points in $\PP^{n-1}.$

Macaulay Style Formulas for the Toric Residue

We present an explicit formula for computing toric residues as a quotient of two determinants, a la Macaulay, where the numerator is a minor of the denominator. We also give an irreducible representation of toric residues by extending the theory of subresultants to monomials of critical degree in the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding toric variety.

Implicitization of surfaces in P^3 in the presence of base points

We show that the method of moving quadrics for implicitizing surfaces in P^3 applies in certain cases where base points are present. However, if the ideal defined by the parametrization is saturated, then this method rarely applies. Instead, we show that when the base points are a local complete intersection, the implicit equation can be computed as the resultant of the first syzygies.

On the structure of mu-classes

We prove that, if μ<\lfloor n/2\rfloor, then every rational plane curve of degree n and class μis a limit of parametrizations of the same degree and class μ+1. This property was conjectured in D.Cox, T.Sederberg,F.Chen's paper: "The moving line ideal basis of planar rational curves" (Comput. Aided Geom. Des. 15 (1998), 803-827), and its validity allows an explicit description of the variety of parametrizations of degree n and class μ, for all (n,μ).

Macaulay Style Formulas for Sparse Resultants

We present formulas for computing the resultant of sparse polynomials as a quotient of two determinants, the denominator being a minor of the numerator. These formulas extend the original formulation given by Macaulay for homogeneous polynomials.

Resultants and Moving Surfaces

We prove a conjectured relationship among resultants and the determinants arising in the formulation of the method of moving surfaces for computing the implicit equation of rational surfaces formulated by Sederberg. In addition, we extend the validity of this method to the case of not properly parametrized surfaces without base points.

Explicit formulas for the multivariate resultant

We present formulas for the homogenous multivariate resultant as a quotient of two determinants. They extend classical Macaulay formulas, and involve matrices of considerably smaller size, whose non zero entries include coefficients of the given polynomials and coefficients of their Bezoutian. These formulas can also be viewed as an explicit computation of the morphisms and the determinant of a resultant complex.

The A-hypergeometric System Associated with a Monomial Curve

We make a detailed analysis of the A-hypergeometric system (or GKZ system) associated with a monomial curve and integral, hence resonant, exponents. We characterize the Laurent polynomial solutions and show that these are the only rational solutions. We also show that for any exponent, there are at most two linearly independent Laurent solutions, and that the upper bound is reached if and only if the curve is not arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay. We then construct, for all integral parameters, a basis of local solutions in terms of the roots of the generic univariate polynomial associated with A. We determine the holonomic rank r for all integral exponents and show that it is constantly equal to the degree d of X if and only if X is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. Otherwise there is at least one exponent for which r = d + 1.
