Inverse problems for the anisotropic Maxwell equations

We prove that the electromagnetic material parameters are uniquely determined by boundary measurements for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in certain anisotropic settings. We give a uniqueness result in the inverse problem for Maxwell equations on an admissible Riemannian manifold, and a uniqueness result for Maxwell equations in Euclidean space with admissible matrix coefficients. The proofs are based on a new Fourier analytic construction of complex geometrical optics solutions on admissible manifolds, and involve a proper notion of uniqueness for such solutions.

Nondispersive radial solutions to energy supercritical non-linear wave equations, with applications

In this paper we establish optimal pointwise decay estimates for non-dispersive (compact) radial solutions to non-linear wave equations in 3 dimensions, in the energy supercritical range. As an application, we show for the full energy supercritical range, in the defocusing case, that if the scale invariant Sobolev norm of a radial solution remains bounded in its maximal interval of existence, then the solution must exist for all times and scatter.

Global Schrödinger maps

We consider the Schrödinger map initial-value problem in dimension two or greater. We prove that the Schrödinger map initial-value problem admits a unique global smooth solution, provided that the initial data is smooth and small in the critical Sobolev space. We prove also that the solution operator extends continuously to the critical Sobolev space.

Regularity of the minimizers in the composite membrane problem in R^2

We study the regularity of minimizers to the composite membrane problem in the plane (ie given a domain omega and a positive number A, smaller than the measure of omega, minimize the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Schrodinger operator with potential equal to a fixed multiple of the characteristic function of a subset D of omega, with measure A). We show that for minimizers, the boundary of D is analytic.

Scattering below critical energy for the radial 4D Yang-Mills equation and for the 2D corotational wave map system

We describe the asymptotic behavior as time goes to infinity of solutions of the 2 dimensional corotational wave map system and of solutions to the 4 dimensional, radially symmetric Yang-Mills equation, in the critical energy space, with data of energy smaller than or equal to a harmonic map of minimal energy. An alternative holds: either the data is the harmonic map and the soltuion is constant in time, or the solution scatters in infinite time.

Global well-posedness, scattering and blow-up for the energy critical focusing non-linear wave equation

We prove, for the energy critcal, focusing NLW, that for Cauchy data (u_0, u_1) whose energy is smaller than that of (W,0), where W is the well-known radial positive solution to the corresponding ellipyic equation, the following dichotomy holds: a) if the homogeneous Sobolev norm H^1 of u_0 is smaller than that of W, we have global well-posedness and scattering, b) if the homogeneous Sobolev norm H^1 of u_0 is larger than that of W, there is blow-up in finite time. Our general approach is the one we introduced in our previous work on the corresponding problem for NLS (math.AP/0610266, Inventiones Math 2006, Online First), where we proved the corresponding result for NLS in the radial case. In the case of the wave equation we are able to treat general data by using a further conservation law in the energy space, the finite speed of propagation and Lorentz transformations to establish a crucial orthogonality property for " energy critical " elements. To prove the required rigidity theorem in the case of blow-up in finite time, we cannot use the invariance of the L^2 norm as in the case of NLS. Instead, (following earlier work of Merle-Zaag and of Giga-Kohn in the parabolic case) we introduce self-similar variables. We thus find a further Liapunov function which allows us to reduce matters to a degenerate elliptic problem with critical non-linearity. We use unique continuation to rule out the existence of non-zero solutions for the degenerate elliptic problem, thus completing the proof.

The regularity and Neumann problem for non-symmetric elliptic operators

We establish optimal L^p bounds for the nontangential maximal function of the gradient of the solution to a second order elliptic operator in divergence form, possibly non-symmetric, with bounded measurable coefficients independent of the vertical variable, on the domain above a Lipschitz graph in the plane, in terms of the L^p norm at the boundary of the tangential derivative of the Dirichlet data, or of the Neumann data.

Global well-posedness, scattering and blow-up for the energy-critical, focusing, non-linear Schrodinger equation in the radial case

We prove, for the energy critical, focusing NLS, that for data whose energy is smaller than that of the standing wave, and whose homogeneous Sobolev norm H^1 is smaller than that of the standing wave and which is radial, we have global well-posedness and scattering in dimensions 3, 4 and 5. This is sharp since if the data is in the inhomogeneous Sobolev space H^1, of energy smaller than the standing wave but of larger homogeneous H^1 norm, we have blow-up in finite time. The result follows from a general method that we introduce into this type of critical problem. By concentration-compactness we produce a critical element, which modulo the symmetries of the equation is compact, has minimal energy among those which fail to have the conclusion of our theorem. In addition, we show that the dilation parameter in the symmetry, for this solution, can be taken strictly positive. We then establish a rigidity theorem that shows that no such compact, modulo symmetries, object can exist. It is only at this step that we use the radial hypothesis. The same analysis, in a simplified form, applies also to the defocusing case, giving a new proof of results of Bourgain and Tao.

On uniqueness properties of solutions of the k-generalized KdV equations

In this paper we study uniqueness properties of solutions of the k-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. Our goal is to obtain sufficient conditions on the behavior of the difference $u_1-u_2$ of two solutions $u_1, u_2$ of the equation at two different times $t_0=0$ and $t_1=1$ which guarantee that $u_1\equiv u_2$.

Free boundary regularity for harmonic measures and Poisson kernels

One of the basic aims of this paper is to study the relationship between the geometry of ``hypersurface like'' subsets of Euclidean space and the properties of the measures they support. In this context we show that certain doubling properties of a measure determine the geometry of its support. A Radon measure is said to be doubling with constant C if C times the measure of the ball of radius r centered on the support is greater than the measure of the ball of radius 2r and the same center. We prove that if the doubling constant of a measure on \R^{n+1} is close to the doubling constant of the n-dimensional Lebesgue measure then its support is well approximated by n-dimensional affine spaces, provided that the support is relatively flat to start with. Primarily we consider sets which are boundaries of domains in \R^{n+1}. The n-dimensional Hausdorff measure may not be defined on the boundary of a domain in R^{n+1}. Thus we turn our attention to the harmonic measure which is well behaved under minor assumptions. We obtain a new characterization of locally flat domains in terms of the doubling properties of their harmonic measure. Along these lines we investigate how the ``weak'' regularity of the Poisson kernel of a domain determines the geometry of its boundary.
