Engineering Atom-Photon Hybridization with Density-Modulated Atomic Ensembles in Coupled Cavities

Radiation-matter hybridization allows atoms to serve as mediators of effective interactions between light modes and, conversely, to interact among themselves via light. Here we exploit the spatial structure of atomic ensembles to control the coupling between modes of distinct cavities, thereby reshaping the resulting atom-photon spectra. We show that extended homogeneous clouds suppress mode-mode couplings through destructive interference, whereas grated clouds can preserve them under specific Bragg conditions. This leads to mode-mode spectral subsplittings, where collectivity arises not only from the atom number but also from the ability to tune modes of different cavities independently. Our results establish spatially engineered atomic ensembles as a pathway to selective photon transfer between modes and precise control of many-body complexity.

Bright and Dark States of Light: The quantum Origin of Classical Interference

Classical theory asserts that several electromagnetic waves cannot interact with matter if they interfere destructively to zero, whereas quantum mechanics predicts a nontrivial light-matter dynamics even when the average electric field vanishes. Here we show that in quantum optics classical interference emerges from collective bright and dark states of light, \textit{i.e.}, entangled superpositions of multi-mode photon-number states. This makes it possible to explain wave interference using the particle description of light and the superposition principle for linear systems.

Anderson localization of light in dimension $d-1$

Localization of electromagnetic waves in disordered potentials is prevented by polarization terms, so only light scattering systems of dimensions $d=1$ and $2$ with scalar properties exhibit light localization. We here show that this result breaks down due to the existence of surface modes, which possess lower-dimensional scattering properties. In particular, vectorial waves in $3D$ ($2D$) presents surface localized modes with scaling consistent with localization $2D$ ($1D$)

Optical binding with cold atoms

Optical binding is a form of light-mediated forces between elements of matter which emerge in response to the collective scattering of light. Such phenomenon has been studied mainly in the context of equilibrium stability of dielectric spheres arrays which move amid dissipative media. In this letter, we demonstrate that optically bounded states of a pair of cold atoms can exist, in the absence of non-radiative damping. We study the scaling laws for the unstable-stable phase transition at negative detuning and the unstable-metastable one for positive detuning. In addition, we show that angular momentum can lead to dynamical stabilisation with infinite range scaling.

Spatial and temporal localization of light in two dimensions

Quasi-resonant scattering of light in two dimensions can be described either as a scalar or as a vectorial electromagnetic wave. Performing a scaling analysis we observe in both cases long lived modes, yet only the scalar case exhibits Anderson localized modes together with extremely long mode lifetimes. We show that the localization length of these modes is influenced only by their position, and not their lifetime. Investigating the reasons for the absence of localization, it appears that both the coupling of several polarizations and the presence of near-field terms are able to prevent long lifetimes and Anderson localization.
