Corrections to di-Higgs boson production with light stops and modified Higgs couplings

The Higgs pair production in gluon fusion is a sensitive probe of beyond-Standard Model (BSM) phenomena and its detection is a major goal for the LHC and higher energy hadron collider experiments. In this work we reanalyze the possible modifications of the Higgs pair production cross section within low energy supersymmetry models. We show that the supersymmetric contributions to the Higgs pair production cross section are strongly correlated with the ones of the single Higgs production in the gluon fusion channel. Motivated by the analysis of ATLAS and CMS Higgs production data, we show that the scalar superpartners' contributions may lead to significant modification of the di-Higgs production rate and invariant mass distribution with respect to the SM predictions. We also analyze the combined effects on the di-Higgs production rate of a modification of the Higgs trilinear and top-quark Yukawa couplings in the presence of light stops. In particular, we show that due to the destructive interference of the triangle and box amplitude contributions to the di-Higgs production cross section, even a small modification of the top-quark Yukawa coupling can lead to a significant increase of the di-Higgs production rate.

Wrong Sign Bottom Yukawa in Low Energy Supersymmetry

The study of the Higgs boson properties is one of the most relevant activities in current particle physics. In particular, the Higgs boson couplings to third generation fermions is an important test of the mechanism of mass generation. In spite of their impact on the production and decay properties of the Higgs boson, the values of these couplings are still uncertain and, in models of new physics, they can differ in magnitude as well as in sign with respect to the Standard Model case. In this article, we study the possibility of a wrong sign bottom-quark Yukawa coupling within the framework of the Minimal and Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Possible experimental tests are also discussed, including novel decays of the heavy CP-even and CP-odd Higgs fields that may be probed in the near future and that may lead to an explanation of some intriguing di-boson signatures observed at the ATLAS experiment.

Bottom-quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry, Dark Matter and the LHC

The LEP experiment at CERN provided accurate measurements of the $Z$ neutral gauge boson properties. Although all measurements agree well with the SM predictions, the forward backward asymmetry of the bottom-quark remains almost 3$σ$ away from the SM value. We proposed that this anomaly may be explained by the existence of a new $U(1)_D$ gauge boson, which couples with opposite charges to the right-handed components of the bottom and charm quarks. Cancellation of gauge anomalies demands the presence of a vector-like singlet charged lepton as well as a neutral Dirac (or Majorana) particle that provides a Dark Matter candidate. Constraints from precision measurements imply that the mass of the new gauge boson should be around $115$~GeV. We discuss the experimental constraints on this scenario, including the existence of a di-jet resonance excess at an invariant mass similar to the mass of this new gauge boson, observed in boosted topologies at the CMS experiment.

Neutrinos in Large Extra Dimensions and Short-Baseline $ν_e$ Appearance

We show that, in the presence of bulk masses, sterile neutrinos propagating in large extra dimensions (LED) can induce electron-neutrino appearance effects. This is in contrast to what happens in the standard LED scenario and hence LED models with explicit bulk masses have the potential to address the MiniBooNE and LSND appearance results, as well as the reactor and Gallium anomalies. A special feature in our scenario is that the mixing of the first KK modes to active neutrinos can be suppressed, making the contribution of heavier sterile neutrinos to oscillations relatively more important. We study the implications of this neutrino mass generation mechanism for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments, and show that the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program at Fermilab will be able to efficiently probe such a scenario. In addition, this framework leads to massive Dirac neutrinos and thus precludes any signal in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Modification of Higgs Couplings in Minimal Composite Models

We present a comprehensive study of the modifications of Higgs couplings in the SO(5)/SO(4) minimal composite model. We focus on three couplings of central importance to Higgs phenomenology at the LHC: the couplings to top and bottom quarks and the coupling to two gluons. We consider three possible embeddings of the fermionic partners in 5, 10 and 14 of SO(5) and find tth and bbh couplings to be always suppressed in 5 and 10, while in 14 they can be either enhanced or suppressed. Assuming partial compositeness, we analyze the interplay between the tth coupling and the top sector contribution to the Coleman-Weinberg potential for the Higgs boson, and the correlation between tth and ggh couplings. In particular, if the electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered radiatively by the top sector, we demonstrate that the ratio of the tth coupling in composite Higgs models over the Standard Model expectation is preferred to be less than the corresponding ratio of the ggh coupling.

Enhanced Higgs associated production with a top quark pair in the NMSSM with light singlets

Precision measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs resonance recently discovered at the LHC have determined that its properties are similar to the ones of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. However, the current uncertainties in the determination of the Higgs boson couplings leave room for significant deviations from the SM expectations. In fact, if one assumes no correlation between the top-quark and gluon couplings to the Higgs, the current global fit to the Higgs data lead to central values of the Higgs couplings to the bottom-quark and the top-quark that are about 2 $σ$ away from the SM predictions. In a previous work, we showed that such a scenario could be realized in the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the SM (NMSSM), for heavy singlets and light MSSM-like Higgs bosons and scalar top quarks, but for couplings that ruined the perturbative consistency of the theory up to the GUT scale. In this work we show that a perturbative consistent scenario, for somewhat heavier stops, may be obtained in the presence of light singlets. An interesting bonus of this scenario is the possibility of explaining an excess of events observed in CP-even Higgs searches at LEP2.

Higgs-Stoponium Mixing Near the Stop-Antistop Threshold

Supersymmetric extensions of the standard model contain additional heavy neutral Higgs bosons that are coupled to heavy scalar top quarks (stops). This system exhibits interesting field theoretic phenomena when the Higgs mass is close to the stop-antistop production threshold. Existing work in the literature has examined the digluon-to-diphoton cross section near threshold and has focused on enhancements in the cross section that might arise either from the perturbative contributions to the Higgs-to-digluon and Higgs-to-diphoton form factors or from mixing of the Higgs boson with stoponium states. Near threshold, enhancements in the relevant amplitudes that go as inverse powers of the stop-antistop relative velocity require resummations of perturbation theory and/or nonperturbative treatments. We present a complete formulation of threshold effects at leading order in the stop-antistop relative velocity in terms of nonrelativistic effective field theory. We give detailed numerical calculations for the case in which the stop-antistop Green's function is modeled with a Coulomb-Schrödinger Green's function. We find several general effects that do not appear in a purely perturbative treatment. Higgs-stop-antistop mixing effects displace physical masses from the threshold region, thereby rendering the perturbative threshold enhancements inoperative. In the case of large Higgs-stop-antistop couplings, the displacement of a physical state above threshold substantially increases its width, owing to its decay width to a stop-antistop pair, and greatly reduces its contribution to the cross section.

Constraints on Supersymmetric Dark Matter for Heavy Scalar Superpartners

We study the constraints on neutralino dark matter in minimal low energy supersymmetry models and the case of heavy lepton and quark scalar superpartners. For values of the Higgsino and gaugino mass parameters of the order of the weak scale, direct detection experiments are already putting strong bounds on models in which the dominant interactions between the dark matter candidates and nuclei are governed by Higgs boson exchange processes, particularly for positive values of the Higgsino mass parameter mu. For negative values of mu, there can be destructive interference between the amplitudes associated with the exchange of the standard CP-even Higgs boson and the exchange of the non-standard one. This leads to specific regions of parameter space which are consistent with the current experimental constraints and a thermal origin of the observed relic density. In this article we study the current experimental constraints on these scenarios, as well as the future experimental probes, using a combination of direct and indirect dark matter detection and heavy Higgs and electroweakino searches at hadron colliders.

Enhancing the Higgs associated production with a top quark pair

It is pointed out that in a wide class of models reminiscent of type-II Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM) the signal of the Higgs produced in association with a top-antitop quark pair ($tth$) and decaying into gauge bosons can be significantly larger than the Standard Model (SM) prediction without violating any experimental constraints. The crucial feature of these models is enhanced (suppressed) Higgs coupling to top (bottom) quarks and existence of light colored particles that give negative contribution to the effective Higgs coupling to gluons resulting in the gluon fusion rates in the gauge boson decay channels close to SM predictions. We demonstrate this mechanism in NMSSM with light stops and show that $tth$ signal in the $WW$ decay channel can be two times larger than the SM prediction, as suggested by the excesses observed by ATLAS and CMS, provided that the Higgs-singlet superpotential coupling $λ\gtrsim0.8$ and the MSSM-like Higgs boson masses are in the range of 160 to 300 GeV.

A Second Peak in Diphoton (or Diboson) Resonances

Many new physics models contain a neutral scalar resonance that can be predominantly produced via gluon fusion through loops. In such a case, there could be important effects of additional particles, that in turn may hadronize before decaying and form bound states. This interesting possibility may lead to novel signatures with double peaks that can be searched for at the LHC. We study the phenomenology of double peak searches in diboson final states from loop induced production and decay of a new neutral spin-0 resonance at the LHC. The loop-induced couplings should be mediated by particles carrying color and electroweak charge that after forming bound states will induce a second peak in the diboson invariant mass spectrum near twice their mass. A second peak could be present via loop-induced couplings into $gg$ (dijet), $γγ$ and $Zγ$ final states as well as in the $WW$ and $ZZ$ channels for the case of a pseudo-scalar resonance or for scalars with suppressed tree-level coupling to gauge bosons.

CP-odd component of the lightest neutral Higgs boson in the MSSM

The Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model may be described with a two Higgs doublet model with properties that depend on the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. For instance, flavor independent CP-violating phases associated with the gaugino masses, the squark trilinear mass parameters and the Higgsino mass parameter $μ$ may lead to sizable CP-violation in the Higgs sector. For these CP-violating effects to affect the properties of the recently observed SM-like Higgs resonance, the non-standard charged and neutral Higgs bosons masses must be of the order of the weak scale, and both $μ$ as well as the trilinear stop mass parameter $A_t$ must be of the order or larger than the stop mass parameters. Constraints on this possibility come from direct searches for non-standard Higgs bosons, precision measurements on the lightest neutral Higgs properties, including its mass, and electric dipole moments. In this article, we discuss these constraints within the MSSM, trying to evaluate the possible size of the CP-odd component of the lightest neutral Higgs boson, and the possible experimental tests of this CP-violating effect at the LHC.

Probing the Electroweak Phase Transition at the LHC

We study the correlation between the value of the triple Higgs coupling and the nature of the electroweak phase transition. We use an effective potential approach, including higher order, non-renormalizable terms coming from integrating out new physics. We show that if only the dimension six operators are considered, large positive deviations of the triple Higgs coupling from its Standard Model (SM) value are predicted in the regions of parameter space consistent with a strong first order electroweak phase transition (SFOEPT). We also show that at higher orders sizable and negative deviations of the triple Higgs coupling may be obtained, and the sign of the corrections tends to be correlated with the order of the phase transition. We also consider a singlet extension of the SM, which allows us to establish the connection with the effective field theory (EFT) approach and analyze the limits of its validity. Furthermore, we study how to probe the triple Higgs coupling from the double Higgs production at the LHC. We show that selective cuts in the invariant mass of the two Higgs bosons should be used, to maximize the sensitivity for values of the triple Higgs coupling significantly different from the Standard Model one.

On the Alignment Limit of the NMSSM Higgs Sector

The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) with a Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV can be compatible with stop masses of order of the electroweak scale, thereby reducing the degree of fine-tuning necessary to achieve electroweak symmetry breaking. Moreover, in an attractive region of the NMSSM parameter space, corresponding to the "alignment limit" in which one of the neutral Higgs fields lies approximately in the same direction in field space as the doublet Higgs vacuum expectation value, the observed Higgs boson is predicted to have Standard-Model-like properties. We derive analytical expressions for the alignment conditions and show that they point toward a more natural region of parameter space for electroweak symmetry breaking, while allowing for perturbativity of the theory up to the Planck scale. Moreover, the alignment limit in the NMSSM leads to a well defined spectrum in the Higgs and Higgsino sectors, and yields a rich and interesting Higgs boson phenomenology that can be tested at the LHC. We discuss the most promising channels for discovery and present several benchmark points for further study.

Same-Sign Dilepton Excesses and Light Top Squarks

Run 1 data of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) contain excessive events in the same-sign dilepton channel with b-jets and missing transverse energy (MET), which were observed by five separate analyses from ATLAS and CMS collaborations. We show that these events could be explained by direct production of top squarks (stops) in supersymmetry. In particular, a right-handed stop with a mass of 550 GeV decaying into 2 t quarks, 2 W bosons, and MET could fit the observed excess without being constrained by other direct search limits from Run 1. We propose kinematic cuts at 13 TeV to enhance the stop signal, and estimate that stops could be discovered with 40 inverse fb of integrated luminosity at Run 2 of the LHC, when considering only the statistical uncertainty.

Higgs Bosons in Heavy Supersymmetry with an Intermediate $m_A$

The minimal supersymmetric standard model leads to precise predictions of the properties of the light Higgs boson degrees of freedom that depend on only a few relevant supersymmetry breaking parameters. In particular, there is an upper bound on the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson, which for a supersymmetric spectrum of the order of a TeV is barely above the one of the Higgs resonance recently observed at the LHC. This bound can be raised by considering a heavier supersymmetric spectrum, relaxing the tension between theory and experiment. In a previous article, we studied the predictions for the lightest CP-even Higgs mass for large values of the scalar-top and heavy Higgs boson masses. In this article we perform a similar analysis, considering also the case of a CP-odd Higgs boson mass $m_A$ of the order of the weak scale. We perform the calculation using effective theory techniques, considering a two-Higgs doublet model and a Standard Model-like theory and resumming the large logarithmic corrections that appear at scales above and below $m_A$, respectively. We calculate the mass and couplings of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson and compare our results with the ones obtained by other methods.

CMS kinematic edge from s-bottoms

We present two scenarios in the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) that can lead to an explanation of the excess in the invariant mass distribution of two opposite charged, same flavor leptons, and the corresponding edge at an energy of about 78 GeV, recently reported by the CMS collaboration. In both scenarios, s-bottoms are pair produced, and decay to neutralinos and a b-jet. The heavier neutralinos further decay to a pair of leptons and the lightest neutralino through on-shell s-leptons or off-shell neutral gauge bosons. These scenarios are consistent with the current limits on the s-bottoms, neutralinos, and s-leptons. Assuming that the lightest neutralino is stable we discuss the predicted relic density as well as the implications for Dark Matter direct detection. We show that consistency between the predicted and the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment may be obtained in both scenarios. Finally, we define the signatures of these models that may be tested at the 13 TeV run of the LHC.

Complementarity Between Non-Standard Higgs Searches and Precision Higgs Measurements in the MSSM

Precision measurements of the Higgs boson properties at the LHC provide relevant constraints on possible weak-scale extensions of the Standard Model (SM). In the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) these constraints seem to suggest that all the additional, non-SM-like Higgs bosons should be heavy, with masses larger than about 400 GeV. This article shows that such results do not hold when the theory approaches the conditions for "alignment independent of decoupling", where the lightest CP-even Higgs boson has SM-like tree-level couplings to fermions and gauge bosons, independently of the non-standard Higgs boson masses. The combination of current bounds from direct Higgs boson searches at the LHC, along with the alignment conditions, have a significant impact on the allowed MSSM parameter space yielding light additional Higgs bosons. In particular, after ensuring the correct mass for the lightest CP-even Higgs boson, we find that precision measurements and direct searches are complementary, and may soon be able to probe the region of non-SM-like Higgs boson with masses below the top quark pair mass threshold of 350 GeV and low to moderate values of $\tanβ$.

Blind Spots for neutralino Dark Matter in the MSSM with an intermediate m_A

We study the spin-independent neutralino Dark Matter scattering off heavy nuclei in the MSSM. We identify analytically the blind spots in direct detection for intermediate values of $m_A$. In the region where $μ$ and $M_{1,2}$ have opposite signs, there is not only a reduction of the lightest CP-even Higgs coupling to neutralinos, but also a destructive interference between the neutralino scattering through the exchange of the lightest CP-even Higgs and that through the exchange of the heaviest CP-even Higgs. At critical values of $m_A$, the tree-level contribution from the light Higgs exchange cancels the contribution from the heavy Higgs, so the scattering cross section vanishes. We denote these configurations as blind spots, since they provide a generalization of the ones previously discussed in the literature, which occur at very large values of $m_A$. We show that the generalized blind spots may occur in regions of parameter space that are consistent with the obtention of the proper neutralino relic density, and can be tested by non-standard Higgs boson searches and EWino searches at the LHC and future linear colliders.
