Exact solutions of open quantum Brownian motions on the real line for two-level systems

We investigate open quantum Brownian motions as quantum analogues of classical diffusion processes under interaction with an external enviroment. Building upon the microscopic derivation by Sinayskiy and Petruccione [20], we revisit the associated master equation and study its formulation as a generalized parabolic system. Employing Fourier transform methods, we derive exact analytical solutions for one-dimensional evolutions of particles with two-level internal degree of freedom.

One-dimensional Continuous-Time Quantum Markov Chains: qubit probabilities and measures

Quantum Markov chains (QMCs) are positive maps on a trace-class space describing open quantum dynamics on graphs. Such objects have a statistical resemblance with classical random walks, while at the same time it allows for internal (quantum) degrees of freedom. In this work we study continuous-time QMCs on the integer line, half-line and finite segments, so that we are able to obtain exact probability calculations in terms of the associated matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials and measures. The methods employed here are applicable to a wide range of settings, but we will restrict to classes of examples for which the Lindblad generators are induced by a single positive map, and such that the Stieltjes transforms of the measures and their inverses can be calculated explicitly.

Quantum Markov chains on the line: matrix orthogonal polynomials, spectral measures and their statistics

Inspired by the classical spectral analysis of birth-death chains using orthogonal polynomials, we study an analogous set of constructions in the context of open quantum dynamics and related walks. In such setting, block tridiagonal matrices and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials are the natural objects to be considered. We recall the problems of the existence of a matrix of measures or weight matrix together with concrete calculations of basic statistics of the walk, such as site recurrence and first passage time probabilities, with these notions being defined in terms of a quantum trajectories formalism. The discussion concentrates on the models of quantum Markov chains, due to S. Gudder, and on the particular class of open quantum walks, due to S. Attal et al. The folding trick for birth-death chains on the integers is revisited in this setting together with applications of the matrix-valued Stieltjes transform associated with the measures, thus extending recent results on the subject. Finally, we consider the case of non-symmetric weight matrices and explore some examples.

Mean hitting times of quantum Markov chains in terms of generalized inverses

We study quantum Markov chains on graphs, described by completely positive maps, following the model due to S. Gudder (J. Math. Phys. 49, 072105, 2008) and which includes the dynamics given by open quantum random walks as defined by S. Attal et al. (J. Stat. Phys. 147:832-852, 2012). After reviewing such structures we examine a quantum notion of mean time of first visit to a chosen vertex. However, instead of making direct use of the definition as it is usually done, we focus on expressions for such quantity in terms of generalized inverses associated with the walk and most particularly the so-called fundamental matrix. Such objects are in close analogy with the theory of Markov chains and the methods described here allow us to calculate examples that illustrate similarities and differences between the quantum and classical settings.

Quantum Markov processes on graphs, monitoring and hitting times

We make use of matrix representations of completely positive maps in order to study open quantum dynamics on graphs, with emphasis on quantum walks and the associated trajectories obtained via a monitoring of the position. We discuss the discrete and continuous time setting and consider the statistics of particles located on a vertex with some internal degree of freedom. Other classes of semigroup generators, such as graph-induced generators are also considered. In the case of primitive quantum channels we present expressions of the mean hitting time for a particle to reach a vertex in terms of a quantum version of the fundamental matrix, thus extending recent results in the setting of open quantum random walks. An open quantum version of Kac's Lemma for the expected return time is discussed. By considering appropriate block matrix expressions we are able to make computations in terms of matrix-valued transition rates, in analogy with the notion of rates from classical continuous-time Markov chains. Also inspired by the classical case a recurrence criterion for the continuous time open walk setting is presented.

Open quantum random walks on the half-line: the Karlin-McGregor formula, path counting and Foster's Theorem

In this work we consider open quantum random walks on the non-negative integers. By considering orthogonal matrix polynomials we are able to describe transition probability expressions for classes of walks via a matrix version of the Karlin-McGregor formula. We focus on absorbing boundary conditions and, for simpler classes of examples, we consider path counting and the corresponding combinatorial tools. A non-commutative version of the gambler's ruin is studied by obtaining the probability of reaching a certain fortune and the mean time to reach a fortune or ruin in terms of generating functions. In the case of the Hadamard coin, a counting technique for boundary restricted paths in a lattice is also presented. We discuss an open quantum version of Foster's Theorem for the expected return time together with applications.

Open Quantum Random Walks and the Mean Hitting Time Formula

We make use of the Open Quantum Random Walk setting due to S. Attal, F. Petruccione, C. Sabot and I. Sinayskiy [J. Stat. Phys. (2012) 147:832-852] in order to discuss hitting times and a quantum version of the Mean Hitting Time Formula from classical probability theory. We study an open quantum notion of hitting probability on a finite collection of sites and with this we are able to describe the problem in terms of linear maps and its matrix representations. After setting an open quantum version of the fundamental matrix for ergodic Markov chains we are able to prove our main result and as consequence a version of the Random Target Lemma. We also study a mean hitting time formula in terms of the minimal polynomial associated to the matrix representation of the quantum walk. We discuss applications of the results to open quantum dynamics on graphs together with open questions.

Site recurrence of open and unitary quantum walks on the line

We study the problem of site recurrence of discrete time nearest neighbor open quantum random walks (OQWs) on the integer line, proving basic properties and some of its relations with the corresponding problem for unitary (coined) quantum walks (UQWs). For both kinds of walks our discussion concerns two notions of recurrence, one given by a monitoring procedure, another in terms of Pólya numbers, and we study their similarities and differences. In particular, by considering UQWs and OQWs induced by the same pair of matrices, we discuss the fact that recurrence of these walks are related by an additive interference term in a simple way. Based on a previous result of positive recurrence we describe an open quantum version of Kac's lemma for the expected return time to a site.

Nonhomogeneous quantum Markov chains and a notion of ergodicity

Motivated by a model presented by S. Gudder, we study a quantum generalization of Markov chains and discuss the relation between these maps and open quantum random walks, a class of quantum channels described by S. Attal et al. We consider processes which are nonhomogeneous in time, i.e., at each time step, a possibly distinct evolution kernel. Inspired by a spectral technique described by L. Saloff-Coste and J. Zúñiga, we define a notion of ergodicity for nonhomogeneous quantum Markov chains and describe a criterion for ergodicity of such objects in terms of singular values. As a consequence we obtain a quantum version of the classical probability result concerning the behavior of the columns (or rows) of the iterates of a stochastic matrix induced by a finite, irreducible, aperiodic Markov chain. We are also able to relate the ergodic property presented here with the notions of weak and uniform ergodicity known in the literature of noncommutative $L^1$-spaces.

Open quantum random walks, hitting times, gambler's ruin and potential theory

We consider a model of open quantum random walk and together with a quantum trajectory approach we are able to examine a notion of hitting time. We see that many constructions, such as minimal solutions to hitting time problems, are variations of well-known classical probability results, but the density matrix degree of freedom on each site gives rise to systems which are seen to be nonclassical. As a more specific application we study the collection of walks induced by normal commuting contractions, for which the corresponding probability expressions are obtained. We examine quantum versions of the gambler's ruin, birth-and-death chain and a basic theorem on potential theory.

Open quantum random walks: ergodicity, hitting times, gambler's ruin and potential theory

In this work we study certain aspects of Open Quantum Random Walks (OQRWs), a class of quantum channels described by S. Attal et al. \cite{attal}. As a first objective we consider processes which are nonhomogeneous in time, i.e., at each time step, a possibly distinct evolution kernel. Inspired by a spectral technique described by L. Saloff-Coste and J. Zúñiga \cite{saloff}, we define a notion of ergodicity for finite nonhomogeneous quantum Markov chains and describe a criterion for ergodicity of such objects in terms of singular values. As a second objective, and based on a quantum trajectory approach, we study a notion of hitting time for OQRWs and we see that many constructions are variations of well-known classical probability results, with the density matrix degree of freedom on each site giving rise to systems which are seen to be nonclassical. In this way we are able to examine open quantum versions of the gambler's ruin, birth-and-death chain and a basic theorem on potential theory.

On a class of quantum channels, open random walks and recurrence

We study a particular class of trace-preserving completely positive maps, called PQ-channels, for which classical and quantum evolutions are isolated in a certain sense. By combining open quantum random walks with a notion of recurrence, we are able to describe criteria for recurrence of the walk related to this class of channels. Positive recurrence for open walks is also discussed in this context.

On non-commutative transfer operators and Radon-Nikodym derivatives

We study relations between non-commutative Ruelle transfer operators over the C$^*$-algebra $B(\mathcal{H})$ of linear bounded operators over separable Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}$ (infinite-dimensional) and other completely positive maps. Transfer operators possess a simple description in terms of the so called non-commutative Radon-Nikodym derivatives. We describe the problem of existence of a largest positive eigenvalue associated to a positive eigenfunction and uniform convergence of sequences of iterates of transfer operators over $B(\mathcal{H})$. Part of the proof related to the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theorem is obtained by adapting results from quantum spin chain analysis.

On Ruelle transfer operators and completely positive maps

We consider applications of transfer operators (also known as Ruelle operators) to completely positive maps (CPT) in quantum information theory. It is described a correspondence between fixed points of CPT maps and certain Markov-invariant measures. We also obtain a definition of entropy induced by transfer operators and an exponential decay property for mixed-unitary channels.

A quantization procedure based on completely positive maps and Markov operators

We describe $ω$-limit sets of completely positive (CP) maps over finite-dimensional spaces. In such sets and in its corresponding convex hulls, CP maps present isometric behavior and the states contained in it commute with each other. Motivated by these facts, we describe a quantization procedure based on CP maps which are induced by Markov (transfer) operators. Classical dynamics are described by an action over essentially bounded functions. A non-expansive linear map, which depends on a choice of a probability measure, is the centerpiece connecting phenomena over function and matrix spaces.
