The HST/ACS Coma Cluster Survey. II. Data Description and Source Catalogs

The Coma cluster was the target of a HST-ACS Treasury program designed for deep imaging in the F475W and F814W passbands. Although our survey was interrupted by the ACS instrument failure in 2007, the partially completed survey still covers ~50% of the core high-density region in Coma. Observations were performed for 25 fields that extend over a wide range of cluster-centric radii (~1.75 Mpc) with a total coverage area of 274 arcmin^2. The majority of the fields are located near the core region of Coma (19/25 pointings) with six additional fields in the south-west region of the cluster. In this paper we present reprocessed images and SExtractor source catalogs for our survey fields, including a detailed description of the methodology used for object detection and photometry, the subtraction of bright galaxies to measure faint underlying objects, and the use of simulations to assess the photometric accuracy and completeness of our catalogs. We also use simulations to perform aperture corrections for the SExtractor Kron magnitudes based only on the measured source flux and half-light radius. We have performed photometry for ~73,000 unique objects; one-half of our detections are brighter than the 10-sigma point-source detection limit at F814W=25.8 mag (AB). The slight majority of objects (60%) are unresolved or only marginally resolved by ACS. We estimate that Coma members are 5-10% of all source detections, which consist of a large population of unresolved objects (primarily GCs but also UCDs) and a wide variety of extended galaxies from a cD galaxy to dwarf LSB galaxies. The red sequence of Coma member galaxies has a constant slope and dispersion across 9 magnitudes (-21<M_F814W<-13). The initial data release for the HST-ACS Coma Treasury program was made available to the public in 2008 August. The images and catalogs described in this study relate to our second data release.

Holographic Flavor Transport in Schroedinger Spacetime

We use gauge-gravity duality to study the transport properties of a finite density of charge carriers in a strongly-coupled theory with non-relativistic symmetry. The field theory is N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory in the limit of large Nc and with large 't Hooft coupling, deformed by an irrelevant operator, coupled to a number Nf of massive N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group, i.e. flavor fields. The irrelevant deformation breaks the relativistic conformal group down to the Schroedinger group, which has non-relativistic scale invariance with dynamical exponent z=2. Introducing a finite baryon number density of the flavor fields provides us with charge carriers. We compute the associated DC and AC conductivities using the dual gravitational description of probe D7-branes in an asymptotically Schroedinger spacetime. We generically find that in the infrared the conductivity exhibits scaling with temperature or frequency that is relativistic, while in the ultraviolet the scalings appear to be non-relativistic with dynamical exponent z=2, as expected in the presence of the irrelevant deformation.

Barred Galaxies in the Coma Cluster

We use ACS data from the HST Treasury survey of the Coma cluster (z~0.02) to study the properties of barred galaxies in the Coma core, the densest environment in the nearby Universe. This study provides a complementary data point for studies of barred galaxies as a function of redshift and environment. From ~470 cluster members brighter than M_I = -11 mag, we select a sample of 46 disk galaxies (S0--Im) based on visual classification. The sample is dominated by S0s for which we find an optical bar fraction of 47+/-11% through ellipse fitting and visual inspection. Among the bars in the core of the Coma cluster, we do not find any very large (a_bar > 2 kpc) bars. Comparison to other studies reveals that while the optical bar fraction for S0s shows only a modest variation across low-to-intermediate density environments (field to intermediate-density clusters), it can be higher by up to a factor of ~2 in the very high-density environment of the rich Coma cluster core.

Residues of Correlators in the Strongly Coupled N=4 Plasma

Quasinormal modes of asymptotically AdS black holes can be interpreted as poles of retarded correlators in the dual gauge theory. To determine the response of the system to small external perturbations it is not enough to know the location of the poles: one also needs to know the residues. We compute them for R-charge currents and find that they are complex except for the hydrodynamic mode, whose residue is purely imaginary. For different quasinormal modes the residue grows with momentum q, whereas for the hydrodynamic mode it behaves as a damped oscillation with distinct zeroes at finite q. Similar to collective excitations at weak coupling the hydrodynamic mode decouples at short wavelengths. Knowledge of the residues allows as well to define the time scale t_H from when on the system enters the hydrodynamic regime, restricting the validity of hydrodynamic simulations to times t>t_H.

The HST/ACS Coma Cluster Survey: I - Survey Objectives and Design

We describe the HST ACS Coma cluster Treasury survey, a deep two-passband imaging survey of one of the nearest rich clusters of galaxies, the Coma cluster (Abell 1656). The survey was designed to cover an area of 740 square arcmin in regions of different density of both galaxies and intergalactic medium within the cluster. The ACS failure of January 27th 2007 leaves the survey 28% complete, with 21 ACS pointings (230 square arcmin) complete, and partial data for a further 4 pointings (44 square arcmin). Predicted survey depth for 10 sigma detections for optimal photometry of point sources is g' = 27.6 in the F475W filter, and IC=26.8 mag in F814 (AB magnitudes). Initial simulations with artificially injected point sources show 90% recovered at magnitude limits of g' = 27.55 and IC = 26.65. For extended sources, the predicted 10 sigma limits for a 1 square arcsecond region are g' = 25.8 mag/sq. arcsec and IC = 25.0 mag/sq. arcsec. We highlight several motivating science goals of the survey, including study of the faint end of the cluster galaxy luminosity function, structural parameters of dwarf galaxies, stellar populations and their effect on colors and color gradients, evolution of morphological components in a dense environment, the nature of ultra compact dwarf galaxies, and globular cluster populations of cluster galaxies of a range of luminosities and types. This survey will also provide a local rich cluster benchmark for various well known global scaling relations and explore new relations pertaining to the nuclear properties of galaxies.

Confinement, Screening and the Center on S^3 x S^1

We compute the one-loop effective potential for the Polyakov loop on $S^3 times S^1$ for an asymptotically free gauge theory of arbitrary group $G$ and a generic matter content. We apply this result to study the phase structures of $G_2$, SO(N) and $Sp(2N)$ gauge theories which turn out to be in qualitative agreement with the results of lattice calculations. On $S^3 \times S^1$, at zero temperature, the Polyakov loop is zero for kinematical reasons. For small but non-zero temperature, the Polyakov loop is still zero if the gauge theory has an unbroken center, while it acquires a small vacuum expectation value for gauge theories whose center is trivial or explicitly broken by the presence of dynamical matter fields. At high temperatures, the saddle point structure of the effective potential is different from the low temperature case suggesting that the theory is in the deconfined phase. At finite $N$, the Polyakov loop is non-zero in the high temperature phase only in theories with no unbroken center symmetry, consistent with screening of the external charge introduced by the Polyakov loop and Gauss law on a compact space.

Holographic Meson Melting

The plasma phase at high temperatures of a strongly coupled gauge theory can be holographically modelled by an AdS black hole. Matter in the fundamental representation and in the quenched approximation is introduced through embedding D7-branes in the AdS-Schwarzschild background. Low spin mesons correspond to the fluctuations of the D7-brane world volume. As is well known by now, there are two different kinds of embeddings, either reaching down to the black hole horizon or staying outside of it. In the latter case the fluctuations of the D7-brane world volume represent stable low spin mesons. In the plasma phase we do not expect mesons to be stable but to melt at sufficiently high temperature. We model the late stages of this meson melting by the quasinormal modes of D7-brane fluctuations for the embeddings that do reach down to the horizon. The inverse of the imaginary part of the quasinormal frequency gives the typical relaxation time back to equilibrium of the meson perturbation in the hot plasma. We briefly comment on the possible application of our model to quarkonium suppression.

Absorption Lengths in the Holographic Plasma

We consider the effect of a periodic perturbation with frequency $ω$ on the holographic N=4 plasma represented by the planar AdS black hole. The response of the system is given by exponentially decaying waves. The corresponding complex wave numbers can be found by solving wave equations in the AdS black hole background with infalling boundary conditions on the horizon in an analogous way as in the calculation of quasinormal modes. The complex momentum eigenvalues have an interpretation as poles of the retarded Green's functions, where the inverse of the imaginary part gives an absorption length $λ$. At zero frequency we obtain the screening length for a static field. These are directly related to the glueball masses in the dimensionally reduced theory. We also point out that the longest screening length corresponds to an operator with non-vanishing R-charge and thus does not have an interpretation as a QCD3 glueball.

The impact on the general properties of HII galaxies in the local universe of the visibility of the [OIII]l 4363 line

We present a statistical study of a very large sample of HII galaxies taken from the literature. We focus on the differences in several properties between galaxies that show the auroral line [OIII]l4363 and those that do not present this feature in their spectra. It turns out that objects without this auroral line are more luminous, more metal-rich and present a lower ionization degree. The underlying population is found to be much more important for objects without the [OIII]l 4363 line, and the effective temperature of the ionizing star clusters of galaxies not showing the auroral line is probably lower. We also study the subsample of HII galaxies whose properties most closely resemble the properties of the intermediate-redshift population of Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs). The objects from this subsample are more similar to the objects not showing the [OIII]l 4363 line. It might therefore be expected that the intermediate-redshift population of LCBGs is powered by very massive, yet somewhat aged star clusters. The oxygen abundance of LCBGs would be greater than the average oxygen abundance of local HII galaxies.

The DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Discovery of Luminous, Metal-poor, Sta r-forming Galaxies at Redshifts z~0.7

We have discovered a sample of 17 metal-poor, yet luminous, star-forming galaxies at redshifts z~0.7. They were selected from the initial phase of the DEEP2 survey of 3900 galaxies and the Team Keck Redshift Survey (TKRS) of 1536 galaxies as those showing the temperature-sensitive [OIII]l4363 auroral line. These rare galaxies have blue luminosities close to L*, high star formation rates of 5 to 12 solar masses per year, and oxygen abundances of 1/3 to 1/10 solar. They thus lie significantly off the luminosity-metallicity relation found previously for field galaxies with strong emission lines at redshifts z~0.7. The prior surveys relied on indirect, empirical calibrations of the R23 diagnostic and the assumption that luminous galaxies are not metal-poor. Our discovery suggests that this assumption is sometimes invalid. As a class, these newly-discovered galaxies are: (1) more metal-poor than common classes of bright emission-line galaxies at z~0.7 or at the present epoch; (2) comparable in metallicity to z~3 Lyman Break Galaxies but less luminous; and (3) comparable in metallicity to local metal-poor eXtreme Blue Compact Galaxies (XBCGs), but more luminous. Together, the three samples suggest that the most-luminous, metal-poor, compact galaxies become fainter over time.

The Holographic Life of the eta'

In the string holographic dual of large-N_c QCD with N_f flavours of Kruczenski et al, the eta' meson is massless at infinite N_c and dual to a collective fluctuation of N_f D6-brane probes in a supergravity background. Here we identify the string diagrams responsible for the generation of a mass of order N_f/N_c, consistent with the Witten-Veneziano formula, and show that the supregravity limit of these diagrams corresponds to mixings with pseudoscalar glueballs. We argue that the dependence on the theta-angle in the supergravity description occurs only through the combination theta + 2 \sqrt{N_f} eta' / f_pi, as dictated by the U(1) anomaly. We provide a quantitative test by computing the linear term in the eta' potential in two independent ways, with perfect agreement.
