Rotational and translational drags of a Janus particle close to a wall and a lipid membrane

Hypothesis: Measuring rotational and translational Brownian motion of single spherical particles reveals dissipations due to the interaction between the particle and the environment. Experiments: In this article, we show experiments where the in-plane translational and two rotational drag coefficients of a single spherical Brownian particle can be measured. These particle drags are functions of the particle size and the particle-wall distance, and of the viscous dissipations at play. We measure drag coefficients for Janus particles close to a solid wall and close to a lipid bilayer membrane. Findings: For a particle close to wall, we show that according to hydrodynamic models, particlewall distance and particle size can be determined. For a particle partially wrapped by lipid membranes, in absence of strong binding interactions, translational and rotational drags are significantly larger than the ones of non-wrapped particles. Beside the effect of the membrane viscosity, we show that dissipations in the deformed membrane cap region strongly contribute to the drag coefficients.

BIOSTIRLING-4SKA : A cost effective and efficient approach for a new generation of solar dish-Stirling plants based on storage and hybridization; An Energy demo project for Large Scale Infrastructures",

The BIOSTIRLING - 4SKA (B4S) is a EU demonstration project dealing with the implementation of a cost-effective and efficient new generation of solar dish-Stirling plants based on hybridization and efficient storage at the industrial scale. The main goal of the B4S demonstration project is the generation of electric power using simultaneously solar power and gas to supply an isolated system and act as a scalable example of potential power supply for many infrastructures, including future sustainable large scientific infrastructures. B4S build an interdisciplinary approach to address reliability, maintainability and costs of this technology. In April 2017, B4S successfully tested in Portugal the first world Stirling hybrid system providing about 4kW of power to a phased array of antennas, overcoming challenges in Stirling and hybridization and smartgrid technologies. B4SKA Consortium, with fourteen companies from six European countries, has performed the engineering, construction, assembly and experimental exploitation, under contract signed with the European to develop on off-grid demonstrator in Contenda (Moura) Portugal.

Design, prototyping and testing of a compact superconducting double quarter wave crab cavity

A novel design of superconducting Crab Cavity was proposed and designed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The new cavity shape is a Double Quarter Wave or DQWCC. After fabrication and surface treatments, the niobium proof-of-principle cavity was cryogenically tested in a vertical cryostat. The cavity is extremely compact yet has a low frequency of 400 MHz, an essential property for service for the Large Hadron Collider luminosity upgrade. The electromagnetic properties of the cavity are also well matched for this demanding task. The demonstrated deflecting voltage of 4.6 MV is well above the requirement for a crab cavity in the future High Luminosity LHC of 3.34 MV. In this paper we present the design, prototyping and test results of the DQWCC.
