Unquenched flavor in the gauge/gravity correspondence

Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we review the studies of field theories with a large number of adjoint and fundamental fields, in the Veneziano limit. We concentrate in set-ups where the fundamentals are introduced by a smeared set of D-branes. We make emphasis on the general ideas and then in subsequent chapters that can be read independently, describe particular considerations in various different models. Some new material is presented along the various sections.

A light scalar from walking solutions in gauge-string duality

We consider the type-IIB background generated by the strong-coupling limit of Nc D5 branes wrapped on S2, and focus our attention on a special class of solutions that exhibit walking behavior. We compute numerically the spectrum of scalar fluctuations around vacua of this class. Besides two cuts, and sequences of single poles converging on one of the branch points, the spectrum contains one isolated scalar, the mass of which is suppressed by the length of the walking region. Approximate scale-invariance symmetry in the walking region suggests that this be interpreted as a light dilaton, the pseudo-Goldstone boson of dilatations.

Walking Dynamics from String Duals

Within the context of a String Theory dual to N=1 gauge theories with gauge group SU(Nc) and large Nc, we identify a class of solutions of the background equations for which a suitably defined dual of the gauge coupling exhibits the features of a walking theory. We find evidence for three distinct, dynamically generated scales, characterizing walking, symmetry breaking and confinement, and we put them in correspondence with field theory by an analysis of the operators driving the flow.

Heavy quark potential with dynamical flavors: a first order transition

We study the static potential between external quark-antiquark pairs in a strongly coupled gauge theory with a large number of colors and massive dynamical flavors, using a dual string description. When the constituent mass of the dynamical quarks is set below a certain critical value, we find a first order phase transition between a linear and a Coulomb-like regime. Above the critical mass the two phases are smoothly connected. We also study the dependence on the theory parameters of the quark-antiquark separation at which the static configuration decays into specific static-dynamical mesons.

String duals of two-dimensional (4,4) supersymmetric gauge theories

We study duals to field theories in two dimensions with N=(4,4) SUSY. The string backgrounds reproduce certain non-perturbative aspects of the dual field theory with a large number of colors N_c and a tunable number of flavors N_f. Different aspects of the two-dimensional field theory are discussed, among them the running of gauge couplings, the spectrum of mesons in Higgs and Coulomb branches, entanglement entropy and the non-relativistic version of our string backgrounds.

Comments on the String dual to N=1 SQCD

We study the String dual to N=1 SQCD deformed by a quartic superpotential in the quark superfields. We present a unified view of the previous results in the literature and find new exact solutions and new asymptotic solutions. Then we study the Physics encoded in these backgrounds, giving among other things a resolution to an old puzzle related to the beta function and a sufficient criteria for screening. We also extend our results to the SO(Nc) case where we present a candidate for the Wilson loop in the spinorial representation. Various aspects of this line of research are critically analyzed.

Elaborations on the String Dual to N=1 SQCD

In this paper we make further refinements to the duality proposed between N=1 SQCD and certain string (supergravity plus branes) backgrounds, working in the regime of comparable large number of colors and flavors. Using the string theory solutions, we predict different field theory observables and phenomena like Seiberg duality, gauge coupling and its running, the behavior of Wilson and 't Hooft loops, anomalous dimensions of the quark superfields, quartic superpotential coupling and its running, continuous and discrete anomaly matching. We also give evidence for the smooth interpolation between higgsed and confining vacua. We provide several matchings between field theory and string theory computations.

Cosmology from String Theory

We explore the cosmological content of Salam-Sezgin six dimensional supergravity, and find a solution to the field equations in qualitative agreement with observation of distant supernovae, primordial nucleosynthesis abundances, and recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background. The carrier of the acceleration in the present de Sitter epoch is a quintessence field slowly rolling down its exponential potential. Intrinsic to this model is a second modulus which is automatically stabilized and acts as a source of cold dark matter with a mass proportional to an exponential function of the quintessence field (hence realizing VAMP models within a String context). However, any attempt to saturate the present cold dark matter component in this manner leads to unacceptable deviations from cosmological data -- a numerical study reveals that this source can account for up to about 7% of the total cold dark matter budget. We also show that (1) the model will support a de Sitter energy in agreement with observation at the expense of a miniscule breaking of supersymmetry in the compact space; (2) variations in the fine structure constant are controlled by the stabilized modulus and are negligible; (3) ``fifth''forces are carried by the stabilized modulus and are short range; (4) the long time behavior of the model in four dimensions is that of a Robertson-Walker universe with a constant expansion rate (w = -1/3). Finally, we present a String theory background by lifting our six dimensional cosmological solution to ten dimensions.

Unquenched Flavors in the Klebanov-Witten Model

Using AdS/CFT, we study the addition of an arbitrary number of backreacting flavors to the Klebanov-Witten theory, making many checks of consistency between our new Type IIB plus branes solution and expectations from field theory. We study generalizations of our method for adding flavors to all N=1 SCFTs that can be realized on D3-branes at the tip of a Calabi-Yau cone. Also, general guidelines suitable for the addition of massive flavor branes are developed.

Backreacting Flavors in the Klebanov-Strassler Background

In this paper we present new analytic solutions of pure Type IIB supergravity plus D7-branes describing the addition of an arbitrary number of flavors to the Klebanov-Tseytlin and Klebanov-Strassler backgrounds. We provide a precise field theory dual and a detailed analysis of the duality cascade which describes its RG flow. Matchings of beta functions and anomalies between the field theory and the string setup are presented. We give an understanding of Seiberg duality as a large gauge transformation on the RR and NSNS potentials. We also analyze the UV behavior of the field theory, that as suggested by the string background can be associated with a duality wall.

Towards the String Dual of N=1 SQCD-like Theories

We construct supergravity plus branes solutions, which we argue to be related to 4d N=1 SQCD with a quartic superpotential. The geometries depend on the ratio Nf/Nc which can be kept of order one, present a good singularity at the origin and are weakly curved elsewhere. We support our field theory interpretation by studying a variety of features like R-symmetry breaking, instantons, Seiberg duality, Wilson loops and pair creation, running of couplings and domain walls. In a second part of this paper, we address a different problem: the analysis of the interesting physics of different members of a family of supergravity solutions dual to (unflavored) N=1 SYM plus some UV completion.

Glueballs of Super Yang-Mills from Wrapped Branes

In this paper we study qualitative features of glueballs in N=1 SYM for models of wrapped branes in IIA and IIB backgrounds. The scalar mode, 0++ is found to be a mixture of the dilaton and the internal part of the metric. We carry out the numerical study of the IIB background. The potential found exhibits a mass gap and produces a discrete spectrum without any cut-off. We propose a regularization procedure needed to make these states normalizable.

Dipole Deformations of N=1 SYM and Supergravity backgrounds with U(1) X U(1) global symmetry

We study SL(3,R) deformations of a type IIB background based on D5 branes that is conjectured to be dual to N=1 SYM. We argue that this deformation of the geometry correspond to turning on a dipole deformation in the field theory on the D5 branes. We give evidence that this deformation only affects the KK-sector of the dual field theory and helps decoupling the KK dynamics from the pure gauge dynamics. Similar deformations of the geometry that is dual to N=2 SYM are studied. Finally, we also study a deformation that leaves us with a possible candidate for a dual to N=0 YM theory.

Probing Split Supersymmetry with Cosmic Rays

A striking aspect of the recently proposed split supersymmetry is the existence of heavy gluinos which are metastable because of the very heavy squarks which mediate their decay. In this paper we correlate the expected flux of these particles with the accompanying neutrino flux produced in inelastic $pp$ collisions in distant astrophysical sources. We show that an event rate at the Pierre Auger Observatory of approximately 1 yr$^{-1}$ for gluino masses of about 500 GeV is consistent with existing limits on neutrino fluxes. The extremely low inelasticity of the gluino-containing hadrons in their collisions with the air molecules makes possible a distinct characterization of the showers induced in the atmosphere. Should such anomalous events be observed, we show that their cosmogenic origin, in concert with the requirement that they reach the Earth before decay, leads to a lower bound on their proper lifetime of the order of 100 years, and consequently, to a lower bound on the scale of supersymmetry breaking, $Λ_{\rm SUSY} >2.6 \times 10^{11}$ GeV. Obtaining such a bound is not possible in collider experiments.

Quantum Relaxation of the Cosmological Constant

We describe a mechanism that drives the Cosmological Constant to zero value. This mechanism is based on the quantum triviality of $λϕ^4$ field theory and works in $AdS$ space. Some subtleties of the model are discussed.

Rotating membranes on G_2 manifolds, logarithmic anomalous dimensions and N=1 duality

We show that the $E-S \sim \log S$ behaviour found for long strings rotating on $AdS_5\times S^5$ may be reproduced by membranes rotating on $AdS_4\times S^7$ and on a warped $AdS_5$ M-theory solution. We go on to obtain rotating membrane configurations with the same $E-K \sim \log K$ relation on $G_2$ holonomy backgrounds that are dual to ${\mathcal{N}}=1$ gauge theories in four dimensions. We study membrane configurations on $G_2$ holonomy backgrounds systematically, finding various other Energy-Charge relations. We end with some comments about strings rotating on warped backgrounds.

RG flows from Spin(7), CY 4-fold and HK manifolds to AdS, Penrose limits and pp waves

We obtain explicit realizations of holographic renormalization group (RG) flows from M-theory, from E^{2,1} \times Spin(7) at UV to AdS_4 \times \tilde{S^7} (squashed S^7) at IR, from E^{2,1} \times CY4 at UV to AdS_4 \times Q^{1,1,1} at IR, and from E^{2,1} \times HK (hyperKahler) at UV to AdS_4 \times N^{0,1,0} at IR. The dual type IIA string theory configurations correspond to D2-D6 brane systems where D6 branes wrap supersymmetric four-cycles. We also study the Penrose limits and obtain the pp-wave backgrounds for the above configurations. Besides, we study some examples of non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric flows in five-dimensional gauge theories.

Fermions in Bosonic String Theories

We generalize the Jackiw-Rebbi-Hasenfratz-'t Hooft construction of fermions from bosons to demonstrate the fermionic nature of certain bound states involving SU(N) instantons in even spatial dimensions and SO(N) instantons in $8k+1$ spatial dimensions. We use this result to identify several fermionic excitations in various perturbatively bosonic string theories. In some examples we are able to identify these fermions as excitations in known conformal field theories and independently confirm their fermionic nature. Examples of the fermions we find include certain 3-string junctions in type 0B theory, excitations of the 0-p system in type 0A theory, excitations of the stable D-particle of type O theory, and a rich spectrum of fermions in the bosonic string compactified on the SO(32) group lattice.
