Financial Technologies, Labor Markets, and Wage Inequality: Evidence from Instant Payment Systems

While technological innovations typically increase wage inequality by favoring skilled workers, we show that instant payment systems instead reduce it. We study the labor market effects of instant payment systems in the context of Brazil's Pix rollout. Using matched employer-employee data, we implement a triple-difference design that exploits pre-Pix mobile penetration across municipalities, the differential benefits of Pix for small versus large establishments, and the timing of Pix. We find that wages in small establishments rise significantly relative to large establishments after Pix. These gains are concentrated in cash-intensive sectors such as retail and services, with no effects in wholesale or manufacturing. Crucially, wage inequality declines, driven by wage gains in the lower half of the distribution, with no effect at the top. Our evidence points to increased small-firm labor demand, consistent with lower payment frictions. These effects are amplified where low-skill labor is scarce. A calibrated monopsony model implies that uniform Pix adoption would reduce both the within- and between-municipality components of wage dispersion, amplifying the aggregate inequality reduction.

Training Data Set Assessment for Decision-Making in a Multiagent Landmine Detection Platform

Real-world problems such as landmine detection require multiple sources of information to reduce the uncertainty of decision-making. A novel approach to solve these problems includes distributed systems, as presented in this work based on hardware and software multi-agent systems. To achieve a high rate of landmine detection, we evaluate the performance of a trained system over the distribution of samples between training and validation sets. Additionally, a general explanation of the data set is provided, presenting the samples gathered by a cooperative multi-agent system developed for detecting improvised explosive devices. The results show that input samples affect the performance of the output decisions, and a decision-making system can be less sensitive to sensor noise with intelligent systems obtained from a diverse and suitably organised training set.

Torsion pairs in categories of modules over a preadditive category

It is a result of Gabriel that hereditary torsion pairs in categories of modules are in bijection with certain filters of ideals of the base ring, called Gabriel filters or Gabriel topologies. A result of Jans shows that this bijection restricts to a correspondence between (Gabriel filters that are uniquely determined by) idempotent ideals and TTF triples. Over the years, these classical results have been extended in several different directions. In this paper we present a detailed and self-contained exposition of an extension of the above bijective correspondences to additive functor categories over small preadditive categories. In this context, we also show how to deduce parametrizations of hereditary torsion theories of finite type, Abelian recollements by functor categories, and centrally splitting TTFs.
