Perspective: Exciton polarons in two-dimensional hybrid metal-halide perovskites

While polarons --- charges bound to a lattice deformation induced by electron-phonon coupling --- are primary photoexcitations at room temperature in bulk metal-halide hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIP), excitons --- Coulomb-bound el\-ectron-hole pairs --- are the stable quasi-particles in their two-dimensional (2D) analogues. Here we address the fundamental question: are polaronic effects consequential for excitons in 2D-HIOPs? Based on our recent work, we argue that polaronic effects are manifested intrinsically in the exciton spectral structure, which is comprised of multiple non-degenerate resonances with constant inter-peak energy spacing. We highlight our own measurements of population and dephasing dynamics that point to the apparently deterministic role of polaronic effects in excitonic properties. We contend that an interplay of long-range and short-range exciton-lattice couplings give rise to exciton polarons, a character that fundamentally establishes their effective mass and radius, and consequently, their quantum dynamics. Finally, we highlight opportunities for the community to develop the rigorous description of exciton polarons in 2D-HIOPs to advance their fundamental understanding as model systems for condensed-phase materials in which lattice-mediated correlations are fundamental to their physical properties.

Electron-phonon couplings inherent in polarons drive exciton dynamics in two-dimensional metal-halide perovskites

We report on the exciton formation and relaxation dynamics following photocarrier injection in a single-layer two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite. We probe the time evolution of four distinct exciton resonances by means of time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopies, and find that at 5\,K a subset of excitons form on a $\lesssim$ 1-ps timescale, and that these relax subsequently to lower-energy excitons on $\sim$ 5--10\,ps with a marked temperature dependence over $<$ 100\,K. We implement a mode projection analysis that determines the relative contribution of all observed phonons with frequency $\leq$50\,cm$^{-1}$ to inter-exciton nonadiabatic coupling, which in turn determines the rate of exciton relaxation. This analysis ranks the relative contribution of the phonons that participate in polaronic lattice distortions to the exciton inter-conversion dynamics and thus establishes their role in the nonadiabatic mixing of exciton states, and this in the exciton relaxation rate.

Phonon coherences reveal the polaronic character of excitons in two-dimensional lead-halide perovskites

Hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors feature complex lattice dynamics due to the ionic character of the crystal and the softness arising from non-covalent bonds between molecular moieties and the inorganic network. Here we establish that such dynamic structural complexity in a prototypical two-dimensional lead iodide perovskite gives rise to the coexistence of diverse excitonic resonances, each with a distinct degree of polaronic character. By means of high-resolution resonant impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy, we identify vibrational wavepacket dynamics that evolve along different configurational coordinates for distinct excitons and photocarriers. Employing density functional theory calculations, we assign the observed coherent vibrational modes to various low-frequency ($\lesssim 50$\,cm$^{-1}$) optical phonons involving motion in the lead-iodide layers. We thus conclude that different excitons induce specific lattice reorganizations, which are signatures of polaronic binding. This insight on the energetic/configurational landscape involving globally neutral primary photoexcitations may be relevant to a broader class of emerging hybrid semiconductor materials.

Enhanced screening and spectral diversity in many-body elastic scattering of excitons in two-dimensional hybrid metal-halide perovskites

In two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic metal-halide perovskites, the intrinsic optical lineshape reflects multiple excitons with distinct binding energies, each dressed differently by the hybrid lattice. Given this complexity, a fundamentally far-reaching issue is how Coulomb-mediated many-body interactions --- elastic scattering such as excitation-induced dephasing, inelastic exciton bimolecular scattering, and multi-exciton binding --- depend upon the specific exciton-lattice coupling. We report the intrinsic and density-dependent exciton pure dephasing rates and their dependence on temperature by means of a coherent nonlinear spectroscopy. We find exceptionally strong screening effects on multi-exciton scattering relative to other two-dimensional single-atomic-layer semiconductors. Importantly, the exciton-density dependence of the dephasing rates is markedly different for distinct excitons. These findings establish the consequences of particular lattice dressing on exciton many-body quantum dynamics, which critically define fundamental optical properties that underpin photonics and quantum optoelectronics in relevant exciton density regimes.

Lattice vibrations and dynamic disorder in two-dimensional hybrid lead-halide perovskites

By means of non-resonant Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we measure and assign the vibrational spectrum of two distinct two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite derivatives. These two samples are selected in order to probe the effects of the organic cation on lattice dynamics. One templating cation is composed of a phenyl-substituted ammonium derivative, while the other contains a linear alkyl group. We find that modes that directly involve the organic cation are more prevalent in the phenyl-substituted derivative. Comparison of the temperature dependence of the Raman spectra reveals differences in the nature of dynamic disorder, with a strong dependence on the molecular nature of the organic moiety.

Photon entanglement entropy as a probe of many-body correlations and fluctuations

Recent theoretical and experiments have explored the use of entangled photons as a spectroscopic probe of material systems. We develop here a theoretical description for entropy production in the scattering of an entangled biphoton state within an optical cavity. We develop this using perturbation theory by expanding the biphoton scattering matrix in terms of single-photon terms in which we introduce the photon-photon interaction via a complex coupling constant, $ξ$. We show that the von Neumann entropy provides a succinct measure of this interaction. We then develop a microscopic model and show that in the limit of fast fluctuations, the entanglement entropy vanishes whereas in the limit the coupling is homogeneous broadened, the entanglement entropy depends upon the magnitude of the fluctuations and reaches a maximum.

Stable biexcitons in two-dimensional metal-halide perovskites with strong dynamic lattice disorder

With strongly bound and stable excitons at room temperature, single-layer, two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are viable semiconductors for light-emitting quantum optoelectronics applications. In such a technological context, it is imperative to comprehensively explore all the factors --- chemical, electronic and structural --- that govern strong multi-exciton correlations. Here, by means of two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy, we examine excitonic many-body effects in pure, single-layer (PEA)$_2$PbI$_4$ (PEA = phenylethylammonium). We determine the binding energy of biexcitons --- correlated two-electron, two-hole quasiparticles --- to be $44 \pm 5$\,meV at room temperature. The extraordinarily high values are similar to those reported in other strongly excitonic two-dimensional materials such as transition-metal dichalchogenides. Importantly, we show that this binding energy increases by $\sim25$\% upon cooling to 5\,K. Our work highlights the importance of multi-exciton correlations in this class of technologically promising, solution-processable materials, in spite of the strong effects of lattice fluctuations and dynamic disorder.

Probing dynamical symmetry breaking using quantum-entangled photons

We present an input/output analysis of photon-correlation experiments whereby a quantum mechanically entangled bi-photon state interacts with a material sample placed in one arm of a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) apparatus. We show that the output signal contains detailed information about subsequent entanglement with the microscopic quantum states in the sample. In particular, we apply the method to an ensemble of emitters interacting with a common photon mode within the open-system Dicke Model. Our results indicate considerable dynamical information concerning spontaneous symmetry breaking can be revealed with such an experimental system.

Incoherent population mixing contributions to phase-modulation two-dimensional coherent excitation spectra

We present theoretical and experimental results showing the effects of incoherent population mixing on two-dimensional (2D) coherent excitation spectra that are measured via a time-integrated population and phase-sensitive detection. The technique uses four collinear ultrashort pulses and phase modulation to acquire two-dimensional spectra by isolating specific nonlinear contributions to the photoluminescence or photocurrent excitation signal. We demonstrate that an incoherent contribution to the measured lineshape, arising from nonlinear population dynamics over the entire photoexcitation lifetime, generates a similar lineshape to the expected 2D coherent spectra in condensed-phase systems. In those systems, photoexcitations are mobile such that inter-particle interactions are important on any timescale, including those long compared to the 2D coherent experiment. Measurements on a semicrystalline polymeric semiconductor film at low temperature show that, in some conditions in which multi-exciton interactions are suppressed, the technique predominantly detects coherent signal and can be used, in our example, to extract homogeneous linewidths. The same method used on a lead-halide perovskite photovoltaic cell shows that incoherent population mixing of mobile photocarriers can dominate the measured signal since carrier-carrier bimolecular scattering is active even at low excitation densities, which hides the coherent contribution to the spectral lineshape.

Excitonic coupling dominates the homogeneous photoluminescence excitation linewidth in semicrystalline polymeric semiconductors

We measure the homogeneous excitation linewidth of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), a model semicrystalline polymeric semiconductor, by means of two-dimensional coherent photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. At a temperature of 8\,K, we find a linewidth that is always $\gtrsim 110$\,meV full-width-at-half-maximum, which is a significant fraction of the total linewidth. It displays a spectral dependence and is minimum near the 0--0 origin peak. We interpret this spectral dependence of the homogeneous excitation linewidth within the context of a weakly coupled aggregate model.

On the study of a class of non-linear differential equations on compact Riemannian Manifolds

We study the existence of solutions of the non-linear differential equations on the compact Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g), n\geq 2$, Δ_p u + a(x)u^{p-1} = λf(u,x), (E2) where $Δ_p$ is the $p-$laplacian, with $1<p<n$. The equation (E2) generalizes a equation considered by Aubin, where he has considered, a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, the differential equation ($p=2$) Δu + a(x)u = λf(u,x), (E1) where $a(x)$ is a $C^{\infty}$ function defined on $M$ and $f(u,x)$ is a $C^{\infty}$ function defined on $\mathbb{R}\times M$. We show that the equation (E2) has solution $(λ,u)$, where $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, $u \geq 0$, $u \not\equiv 0$ is a function $C^{1,α}$, $0 < α< 1$, if $f \in C^{\infty}$ satisfies some growth and parity conditions.

Plasma Turbulence in the Scrape-off Layer of the ISTTOK Tokamak

The properties of plasma turbulence in a poloidally limited scrape-off layer (SOL) are addressed, with focus on ISTTOK, a large aspect ratio tokamak with a circular cross section. Theoretical investigations based on the drift-reduced Braginskii equations are carried out through linear calculations and non-linear simulations, in two- and three-dimensional geometries. The linear instabilities driving turbulence and the mechanisms that set the amplitude of turbulence as well as the SOL width are identified. A clear asymmetry is shown to exist between the low-field and the high-field sides of the machine. A comparison between experimental measurements and simulation results is presented.

Two-dimensional coherent photocurrent excitation spectroscopy in a polymer solar cell

In high-performance solar cells based on polymeric semiconductors, the mechanism of photocarrier generation on $<100$-fs timescales is yet to be unravelled. In particular the dynamics of early-time electronic coupling between excitons on polymer chains and charge-transfer states need to be investigated in order to develop a detailed picture of ultrafast processes involved in photocurrent production. In this proceeding, we report preliminary measurements using a novel spectroscopy that can measure such correlations: two-dimensional coherent photocurrent excitation spectroscopy. This nonlinear technique measures off-diagonal spectral correlations in a two-dimensional photocurrent excitation spectrum. We interpret these sectroscopic measurements in light of recent theoretical predictions.

Multi-phase semicrystalline microstructures drive exciton dissociation in neat plastic semiconductors

The optoelectronic properties of macromolecular semiconductors depend fundamentally on their solid-state microstructure. For example, the molecular-weight distribution influences polymeric- semiconductor properties via diverse microstructures; polymers of low weight-average molecular weight (Mw) form unconnected, extended-chain crystals, usually of a paraffinic structure. Because of the non-entangled nature of the relatively short-chain macromolecules, this leads to a polycrystalline, one-phase morphology. In contrast, with high-Mw materials, where average chain lengths are longer than the length between entanglements, two-phase morphologies, comprised of crystalline moieties embedded in largely unordered (amorphous) regions, are obtained. We investigate charge photogeneration processes in neat regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) of varying Mw by means of time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. At 10 K, PL originating from recombination of long-lived charge pairs decays over microsecond timescales. Both the amplitude and decay rate distribution depend strongly on Mw. In films with dominant one-phase chain-extended microstructures, the delayed PL is suppressed as a result of a diminished yield of photoinduced charges, and its decay is significantly faster than in two-phase microstructures. However, independent of Mw, charge recombination regenerates singlet excitons in torsionally disordered chains forming more strongly coupled photophysical aggregates than those in the steady-state ensemble, with delayed PL lineshape reminiscent of that in paraffinic morphologies at steady state. We conclude that highly delocalized excitons in disordered regions between crystalline and amorphous phases dissociate extrinsically with yield and spatial distribution that depend intimately upon microstructure.

Direct observation of ultrafast long-range charge separation at polymer:fullerene heterojunctions

In polymeric semiconductors, charge carriers are polarons, which means that the excess charge deforms the molecular structure of the polymer chain that hosts it. This effect results in distinctive signatures in the vibrational modes of the polymer. We probe polaron photo- generation dynamics at polymer:fullerene heterojunctions by monitoring its time-resolved resonance-Raman spectrum following ultrafast photoexcitation. We conclude that polarons emerge within 200 fs, which is nearly two orders of magnitude faster than exciton localisation in the neat polymer film. Surprisingly, further vibrational evolution on <50-ps timescales is modest, indicating that the polymer conformation hosting nascent polarons is not signif- icantly different from that in equilibrium. This suggests that charges are free from their mutual Coulomb potential, under which vibrational dynamics would report charge-pair relaxation. Our work addresses current debates on the photocarrier generation mechanism at organic semiconductor heterojunctions, and is, to our knowledge, the first direct probe of molecular conformation dynamics during this fundamentally important process in these materials.

Noise-induced quantum coherence drives photocarrier generation dynamics at polymeric semiconductor heterojunctions

We present a fully quantum-mechanical model of the electronic dynamics of primary photoexcitations in a polymeric semiconductor heterojunction, which includes both polymer stacking and phonon relaxation. By examining the phonon-induced fluctuations in the state-to-state energy gaps and the exact golden-rule rate constants, we conclude that resonant tunnelling between the primary exciton to delocalized interchain charge-transfer states may be the initial step in the formation of charge-carriers in polymer-based bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic diodes.

Exciton fission via ultrafast long-range resonant tunnelling in organic photovoltaic diodes

We present an exciton/lattice model of the electronic dynamics of primary photoexcitations in a polymeric semiconductor heterojunction which includes both polymer pi-stacking, energetic disorder, and phonon relaxation. Results from our model are consistent with a wide range of recent experimental evidence that excitons decay directly to well-defined polarons on a sub-100 fs timescale, which is substantially faster than exciton relaxation processes. Averaging over multiple samples, we find that as the interfacial offset is increased, a substantial fraction of the density of electronic states in the energy region about the initial exciton carries significant charge-transfer character with two charges separated in the outer regions of the model lattice. The results indicate a slight increase in the density of such current-producing states if the region close to the interface is more disordered. However, since their density of states overlaps the excitation line-shape of the primary exciton, we show that it is possible that the exciton can decay directly into current-producing states via tunneling on an ultrafast time-scale. We find this process to be independent of the location of energetic disorder in the system, and hence we expect exciton fission via resonant tunnelling to be a ubiquitous feature of these systems.

Two-dimensional spatial coherence of excitons in semicrystalline polymeric semiconductors: The effect of molecular weight

The electronic properties of macromolecular semiconductor thin films depend profoundly on their solid-state microstructure, which in turn is governed, among other things, by the processing conditions selected and the polymer chemical nature and molecular weight. Specifically, low-molecular-weight materials form crystalline domains of cofacially $π$-stacked molecules, while the usually entangled nature of higher molecular-weight polymers leads to microstructures comprised of molecularly ordered crystallites interconnected by amorphous regions. Here, we examine the interplay between extended exciton states delocalized along the polymer backbones and across polymer chains within the $π$-stack, depending on the structural development with molecular weight. We combine optical spectroscopies, thermal probes, and theoretical modeling, focusing on neat poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), one of the most extensively studied polymer semiconductors, of weight-average molecular weight of 3-450\,kg/mol. The spatial coherence within the chain is significantly reduced (by nearly 30\%). These observations give valuable structural information; they suggest that the macromolecules in aggregated regions of high-molecular-weight P3HT adopt a more planar conformation compared to low-molecular-weight materials. This results in the observed increase in intrachain exciton coherence. In contrast, shorter chains seem to lead to torsionally more disordered architectures. A rigorous, fundamental description of primary photoexcitations in $π$-conjugated polymers is hence developed: two-dimensional excitons are defined by the chain-length dependent molecular arrangement and interconnectivity of the conjugated macromolecules, leading to interplay between intramolecular and intermolecular spatial coherence.
