Tilings of quadriculated annuli

Tilings of a quadriculated annulus A are counted according to volume (in the formal variable q) and flux (in p). We consider algebraic properties of the resulting generating function Phi_A(p,q). For q = -1, the non-zero roots in p must be roots of unity and for q > 0, real negative.

Slices of matrices - a scenario for spectral theory

Given a real, symmetric matrix S, we define the slice through S as being the connected component containing S of two orbits under conjugation: the first by the orthogonal group, and the second by the upper triangular group. We describe some classical constructions in eigenvalue computations and integrable systems which keep slices invariant -- their properties are clarified by the concept. We also parametrize the closure of a slice in terms of a convex polytope.

The kernel of the adjacency matrix of a rectangular mesh

Given an m x n rectangular mesh, its adjacency matrix A, having only integer entries, may be interpreted as a map between vector spaces over an arbitrary field K. We describe the kernel of A: it is a direct sum of two natural subspaces whose dimensions are equal to $\lceil c/2 \rceil$ and $\lfloor c/2 \rfloor$, where c = gcd (m+1,n+1) - 1. We show that there are bases to both vector spaces, with entries equal to 0, 1 and -1. When K = Z/(2), the kernel elements of these subspaces are described by rectangular tilings of a special kind. As a corollary, we count the number of tilings of a rectangle of integer sides with a specified set of tiles.

Results on infinite dimensional topology and applications to the structure of the critical set of nonlinear Sturm-Liouville operators

We consider the nonlinear Sturm-Liouville differential operator $F(u) = -u'' + f(u)$ for $u \in H^2_D([0, π])$, a Sobolev space of functions satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions. For a generic nonlinearity $f: \RR \to \RR$ we show that there is a diffeomorphism in the domain of $F$ converting the critical set $C$ of $F$ into a union of isolated parallel hyperplanes. For the proof, we show that the homotopy groups of connected components of $C$ are trivial and prove results which permit to replace homotopy equivalences of systems of infinite dimensional Hilbert manifolds by diffeomorphisms.

A special tiling of the rectangle

We count tilings of a rectangle of integer sides m-1 and n-1 by a special set of tiles. The result is obtained fron the study of the kernel of the adjacency matrix of an n x n rectangular graph of Z x Z.

Parametrization by polytopes of intersections of orbits by conjugation

Let S be an nXn real symmetric matrix with spectral decomposition S=Q^T Lambda Q, where Q is an orthogonal matrix and Lambda is diagonal with simple spectrum {lambda_1,..., lambda_n}. Also let O_S e R_S be the orbits by conjugation of S by, respectively, orthogonal matrices and upper triangular matrices with positive diagonal. Denote by F_S the intersection O_S and R_S. We show that the map F tha goes from the closure of F_S to R^n and takes S' = (Q')^T Lambda Q' to diag(Q' Lambda (Q')^T) is a smooth bijection onto its range P_S, the convex hull of some subset of the n! permuatations of (lambda_1, ..., lambda_n). We also find necessary and sufficient conditions for P_S to have n! vertices.

Two results on tilings of quadriculated annuli

We provide a more informal explanation of two results in our manuscript "Tilings of quadriculated annuli". Tilings of a quadriculated annulus $A$ are counted according to volume (in the formal variable q) and flux (in p). The generating function Phi_A(p,q) is such that, for q = -1, the non-zero roots in p are roots of unity and for q > 0, real negative.

An overview of domino and lozenge tilings

We consider tilings of quadriculated regions by dominoes and of triangulated regions by lozenges. We present an overview of results concerning tileability, enumeration and the structure of the space of tilings.

Spectra of semi-regular polytopes

We compute the spectra of the adjacency matrices of the semi-regular polytopes. A few different techniques are employed: the most sophisticated, which relates the 1-skeleton of the polytope to a Cayley graph, is based on methods akin to those of Lovász and Babai ([L], [B]). It turns out that the algebraic degree of the eigenvalues is at most 5, achieved at two 3-dimensional solids.
