Beyond the Answer Key: Robustness Evaluation of Large Language Models for Step-Level Mathematical Verification

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as graders, verifiers, and process auditors, but most mathematical evaluations still emphasize final-answer accuracy. This can obscure whether a model can verify a non-canonical but valid solution trace. We introduce a controlled linear-equation benchmark for evaluating LLMs in the evaluator role. Each instance asks the model to judge final-answer correctness, step-level trace correctness, and the first incorrect step. Our evaluation of state-of-the-art open LLMs reveals a significant robustness gap: models that accurately evaluate canonical solutions often fail when presented with perturbed but logically equivalent variants. Across GPT-OSS 20B, Qwen3-14B, and Phi-4-Reasoning, base models perform well on canonical traces but degrade substantially on perturbed traces, especially for error localization. On valid perturbed traces, base-model false-rejection rates reach 75.6-85.3%, showing strong sensitivity to canonical solution form. Supervised fine-tuning, distillation, and test-time compute improve robustness in some settings, but gains are model dependent and can trade off against canonical performance. The results show that reliable process-level verification remains challenging, and evaluator robustness should be measured separately from solver accuracy, even in a simple algebraic domain with exact ground truth.

TREAT: Evaluating Access to Formal Knowledge across Equivalent Mathematical Representations

AI systems increasingly operate between flexible input representations and formal objects used by downstream tools. A key challenge is recognizing when an unfamiliar formulation denotes a known formal object. We study this challenge through theorem recognition: given an equivalence-preserving transformation of a theorem condition, a model must recover the theorem identity associated with the standard statement. We introduce TREAT, a benchmark for evaluating whether large language models can recover known theorem identities from equivalence-preserving formula-level transformations. Rather than paraphrasing theorem text, TREAT changes the mathematical form of theorem conditions themselves, expressing known results through residual equations, witness statements, optimization identities, set relations, operator forms, and proof-intermediate characterizations. Starting from scraped theorem pages, we filter for entries with usable mathematical expression forms, extract canonical theorem conditions, and generate transformed variants with recorded assumptions and inverse mappings. The final corpus contains 737 theorem identities and 29,480 transformed rows. On a test panel, the best model retrieves the correct theorem identity in only 60.73% of cases. Other systems reveal different failure modes, including abstention, wrong detection, and malformed outputs. These suggest that theorem knowledge can be fragile under equivalent changes in representation. TREAT therefore provides a controlled testbed for evaluating representation-robust access to formal knowledge, with broader relevance to domains that require stable target objects, explicit equivalence relations, validation procedures, and auditable scoring.

A Culturally-Aware Tool for Crowdworkers: Leveraging Chronemics to Support Diverse Work Styles

Crowdsourcing markets are expanding worldwide, but often feature standardized interfaces that ignore the cultural diversity of their workers, negatively impacting their well-being and productivity. To transform these workplace dynamics, this paper proposes creating culturally-aware workplace tools, specifically designed to adapt to the cultural dimensions of monochronic and polychronic work styles. We illustrate this approach with "CultureFit," a tool that we engineered based on extensive research in Chronemics and culture theories. To study and evaluate our tool in the real world, we conducted a field experiment with 55 workers from 24 different countries. Our field experiment revealed that CultureFit significantly improved the earnings of workers from cultural backgrounds often overlooked in design. Our study is among the pioneering efforts to examine culturally aware digital labor interventions. It also provides access to a dataset with over two million data points on culture and digital work, which can be leveraged for future research in this emerging field. The paper concludes by discussing the importance and future possibilities of incorporating cultural insights into the design of tools for digital labor.

Human-Centered Automation

The rapid advancement of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLM), has the potential to revolutionize the way we work and interact with digital systems across various industries. However, the current state of software automation, such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA) frameworks, often requires domain expertise and lacks visibility and intuitive interfaces, making it challenging for users to fully leverage these technologies. This position paper argues for the emerging area of Human-Centered Automation (HCA), which prioritizes user needs and preferences in the design and development of automation systems. Drawing on empirical evidence from human-computer interaction research and case studies, we highlight the importance of considering user perspectives in automation and propose a framework for designing human-centric automation solutions. The paper discusses the limitations of existing automation approaches, the challenges in integrating AI and RPA, and the benefits of human-centered automation for productivity, innovation, and democratizing access to these technologies. We emphasize the importance of open-source solutions and provide examples of how HCA can empower individuals and organizations in the era of rapidly progressing AI, helping them remain competitive. The paper also explores pathways to achieve more advanced and context-aware automation solutions. We conclude with a call to action for researchers and practitioners to focus on developing automation technologies that adapt to user needs, provide intuitive interfaces, and leverage the capabilities of high-end AI to create a more accessible and user-friendly future of automation.

Conceptual Framework for Autonomous Cognitive Entities

The rapid development and adoption of Generative AI (GAI) technology in the form of chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude has greatly increased interest in agentic machines. This paper introduces the Autonomous Cognitive Entity (ACE) model, a novel framework for a cognitive architecture, enabling machines and software agents to operate more independently. Drawing inspiration from the OSI model, the ACE framework presents layers of abstraction to conceptualize artificial cognitive architectures. The model is designed to harness the capabilities of the latest generative AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and multimodal generative models (MMMs), to build autonomous, agentic systems. The ACE framework comprises six layers: the Aspirational Layer, Global Strategy, Agent Model, Executive Function, Cognitive Control, and Task Prosecution. Each layer plays a distinct role, ranging from setting the moral compass and strategic thinking to task selection and execution. The ACE framework also incorporates mechanisms for handling failures and adapting actions, thereby enhancing the robustness and flexibility of autonomous agents. This paper introduces the conceptual framework and proposes implementation strategies that have been tested and observed in industry. The goal of this paper is to formalize this framework so as to be more accessible.

Quantifying the Invisible Labor in Crowd Work

Crowdsourcing markets provide workers with a centralized place to find paid work. What may not be obvious at first glance is that, in addition to the work they do for pay, crowd workers also have to shoulder a variety of unpaid invisible labor in these markets, which ultimately reduces workers' hourly wages. Invisible labor includes finding good tasks, messaging requesters, or managing payments. However, we currently know little about how much time crowd workers actually spend on invisible labor or how much it costs them economically. To ensure a fair and equitable future for crowd work, we need to be certain that workers are being paid fairly for all of the work they do. In this paper, we conduct a field study to quantify the invisible labor in crowd work. We build a plugin to record the amount of time that 100 workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk dedicate to invisible labor while completing 40,903 tasks. If we ignore the time workers spent on invisible labor, workers' median hourly wage was $3.76. But, we estimated that crowd workers in our study spent 33% of their time daily on invisible labor, dropping their median hourly wage to $2.83. We found that the invisible labor differentially impacts workers depending on their skill level and workers' demographics. The invisible labor category that took the most time and that was also the most common revolved around workers having to manage their payments. The second most time-consuming invisible labor category involved hyper-vigilance, where workers vigilantly watched over requesters' profiles for newly posted work or vigilantly searched for labor. We hope that through our paper, the invisible labor in crowdsourcing becomes more visible, and our results help to reveal the larger implications of the continuing invisibility of labor in crowdsourcing.

Becoming the Super Turker: Increasing Wages via a Strategy from High Earning Workers

Crowd markets have traditionally limited workers by not providing transparency information concerning which tasks pay fairly or which requesters are unreliable. Researchers believe that a key reason why crowd workers earn low wages is due to this lack of transparency. As a result, tools have been developed to provide more transparency within crowd markets to help workers. However, while most workers use these tools, they still earn less than minimum wage. We argue that the missing element is guidance on how to use transparency information. In this paper, we explore how novice workers can improve their earnings by following the transparency criteria of Super Turkers, i.e., crowd workers who earn higher salaries on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). We believe that Super Turkers have developed effective processes for using transparency information. Therefore, by having novices follow a Super Turker criteria (one that is simple and popular among Super Turkers), we can help novices increase their wages. For this purpose, we: (i) conducted a survey and data analysis to computationally identify a simple yet common criteria that Super Turkers use for handling transparency tools; (ii) deployed a two-week field experiment with novices who followed this Super Turker criteria to find better work on MTurk. Novices in our study viewed over 25,000 tasks by 1,394 requesters. We found that novices who utilized this Super Turkers' criteria earned better wages than other novices. Our results highlight that tool development to support crowd workers should be paired with educational opportunities that teach workers how to effectively use the tools and their related metrics (e.g., transparency values). We finish with design recommendations for empowering crowd workers to earn higher salaries.

Understanding Chatbot-mediated Task Management

Effective task management is essential to successful team collaboration. While the past decade has seen considerable innovation in systems that track and manage group tasks, these innovations have typically been outside of the principal communication channels: email, instant messenger, and group chat. Teams formulate, discuss, refine, assign, and track the progress of their collaborative tasks over electronic communication channels, yet they must leave these channels to update their task-tracking tools, creating a source of friction and inefficiency. To address this problem, we explore how bots might be used to mediate task management for individuals and teams. We deploy a prototype bot to eight different teams of information workers to help them create, assign, and keep track of tasks, all within their main communication channel. We derived seven insights for the design of future bots for coordinating work.

Redes sociales, participaci\'on ciudadana y la hip\'otesis del slacktivismo: lecciones del caso de "El Bronco" / Social Media, Civic Engagement, and the Slacktivism Hypothesis: Lessons from Mexico's "El Bronco"

El uso de las redes sociales tiene consecuencias positivas o negativas en la participaci\'on ciudadana? La gran parte de los intentos por responder a esta pregunta incluyen datos de la opini\'on p\'ublica de los Estados Unidos, por lo que nosotros ofrecemos un estudio sobre un caso significativo de M\'exico, donde un candidato independiente utiliz\'o las redes sociales para comunicarse con el p\'ublico y rehuy\'o de los medios de comunicaci\'on tradicionales. Dicho candidato, conocido como "El Bronco", gan\'o la carrera por la gubernatura del estado al derrotar a los candidatos de los partidos tradicionales. Adem\'as, gener\'o una participaci\'on ciudadana que se ha mantenido m\'as all\'a del d\'ia de las elecciones. En nuestra investigaci\'on analizamos m\'as de 750 mil mensajes, comentarios y respuestas durante m\'as de tres a\~nos de interacciones en la p\'agina p\'ublica de Facebook de "El Bronco". Examinamos y demostramos que las redes sociales pueden utilizarse para dar cabida a una gran cantidad de interacciones ciudadanas sobre la vida p\'ublica m\'as all\'a de un acontecimiento pol\'itico. Does social media use have a positive or negative impact on civic engagement? The "slacktivism hypothesis" holds that if citizens use social media for political conversation, those conversations will be fleeting and vapid. Most attempts to answer this question involve public opinion data from the United States, so we offer an examination of an important case from Mexico, where an independent candidate used social media to communicate with the public and eschewed traditional media outlets. He won the race for state governor, defeating candidates from traditional parties and triggering sustained public engagement beyond election day. In our investigation, we analyze over 750,000 posts, comments, and replies over three years of conversations on the Facebook page of "El Bronco".
