Casimir forces and high-Tc superconductors

We investigate the Casimir forces between high-$T_c$ superconductors as function of the distance and temperature, focusing on optimally-doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$. We consider formerly studied configurations in normal metals lying in the short-distance (50 nm - 600 nm), and long-distance (600 nm - 10 microns) regimes. The dielectric properties of the material are described in terms of weakly-interacting, short-correlated conducting pairs transported along quasi-2D layers. In the short-range regime, a continuous behavior of the Casimir forces arises, with no significant discontinuity at the transition temperature. This behavior also follows in the equivalent the normal conductor configuration. In the long-range regime, the forces show an abrupt increment at the critical temperature. Simultaneously, the Casimir entropy and the specific heat develop a strong discontinuous behavior, characteristic of the SC-normal phase transition. In every situation, the entropy vanishes at extremely low temperatures.

Go game formal revealing by Ising model

Go gaming is a struggle for territory control between rival, black and white, stones on a board. We model the Go dynamics in a game by means of the Ising model whose interaction coefficients reflect essential rules and tactics employed in Go to build long-term strategies. At any step of the game, the energy functional of the model provides the control degree (strength) of a player over the board. A close fit between predictions of the model with actual games is obtained.

Fictitious Cavity Approach to the Casimir Effect

We obtain expressions for the Casimir energy and force following an approach which may be applied to cavities made up of arbitrary materials. In the case of planar cavities we obtain the well known Lifshitz formula. The approach is easily generalizable to other geometries.

Casimir-like tunneling-induced electronic forces

We study the quantum forces that act between two nearby conductors due to electronic tunneling. We derive an expression for these forces by calculating the flux of momentum arising from the overlap of evanescent electronic fields. Our result is written in terms of the electronic reflection amplitudes of the conductors and it has the same structure as Lifshitz's formula for the electromagnetically mediated Casimir forces. We evaluate the tunneling force between two semiinfinite conductors and between two thin films separated by an insulating gap. We discuss some applications of our results.

High-Multipolar Effects on Dispersive Forces

We show that the dispersive force between a spherical nanoparticle (with a radius $\le$ 100 nm) and a substrate is enhanced by several orders of magnitude when the sphere is near to the substrate. We calculate exactly the dispersive force in the non-retarded limit by incorporating the contributions to the interaction from of all the multipolar electromagnetic modes. We show that as the sphere approaches the substrate, the fluctuations of the electromagnetic field, induced by the vacuum and the presence of the substrate, the dispersive force is enhanced by orders of magnitude. We discuss this effect as a function of the size of the sphere.
