A 3-dimensional scanning trapped-ion probe

Single-atom quantum sensors offer high spatial resolution and high sensitivity to electric and magnetic fields. Among them, trapped ions offer exceptional performance in sensing electric fields, which has been used in particular to probe these in the proximity of metallic surfaces. However, the flexibility of previous work was limited by the use of radio-frequency trapping fields, which has restricted spatial scanning to linear translations, and calls into question whether observed phenomena are connected to the presence of the radio-frequency fields. Here, using a Penning trap instead, we demonstrate a single ion probe which offers three-dimensional position scanning at distances between $50$ $μ\mathrm{m}$ and $450$ $μ\mathrm{m}$ from a metallic surface and above a $200\times200$ $μ\mathrm{m}^{2}$ area, allowing us to reconstruct static and time-varying electric as well as magnetic fields. We use this to map charge distributions on the metallic surface and noise stemming from it. The methods demonstrated here allow similar probing to be carried out on samples with a variety of materials, surface constitutions and geometries, providing a new tool for surface science.

Multi-zone trapped-ion qubit control in an integrated photonics QCCD device

Multiplexed operations and extended coherent control over multiple trapping sites are fundamental requirements for a trapped-ion processor in a large scale architecture. Here we demonstrate these building blocks using a surface-electrode trap with integrated photonic components which are scalable to larger numbers of zones. We implement a Ramsey sequence using the integrated light in two zones, separated by 375 $μ$m, performing transport of the ion from one zone to the other in 200 $μ$s between pulses. In order to achieve low motional excitation during transport, we developed techniques to measure and mitigate the effect of the exposed dielectric surfaces used to deliver the integrated light to the ion. We also demonstrate simultaneous control of two ions in separate zones with low optical crosstalk, and use this to perform simultaneous spectroscopy to correlate field noise between the two sites. Our work demonstrates the first transport and coherent multi-zone operations in integrated photonic ion trap systems, forming the basis for further scaling in the trapped-ion QCCD architecture.

State-dependent control of the motional modes of trapped ions using an integrated optical lattice

In this work we study the interaction of trapped ions with a state-dependent, high-intensity optical lattice formed above an ion trap chip using integrated photonics. We use a single ion to map the optical potential landscape over many periods of the standing-wave field. For a single ion sitting in the centre of the lattice we observe a state-dependent trap-frequency shift of $2π\times 3.33(4)$ kHz, corresponding to a bare optical potential of $2π\times 76.8(5)$ kHz for the electronic ground state. We extend this to two ions, measuring state-dependent shifts of both axial modes. Additionally, using the internal-state dependence of the interaction, we perform a direct measurement of the energy distribution of the motion of a single ion using carrier spectroscopy. Improvements to the setup would allow to increase the state-dependent curvature by more than 50 times, providing a tool which can be utilised for motional state control, and multi-ion gates using optical potentials produced in a scalable fashion.

Low-excitation transport and separation of high-mass-ratio mixed-species ion chains

We demonstrate low-excitation transport and separation of two-ion crystals consisting of one beryllium and one calcium ion, with a high mass ratio of $4.4$. The full separation involves transport of the mixed-species chain, splitting each ion into separate potential wells, and then transport of each ion prior to detection. We find the high mass ratio makes the protocol sensitive to mode crossings between axial and radial modes, as well as to uncontrolled radial electric fields that induce mass-dependent twists of the ion chain. By controlling these stages, we achieve excitation as low as $\bar{n}=1.40 \pm 0.08$ phonons for the calcium ion and $\bar{n}=1.44 \pm 0.09$ phonons for the beryllium ion. Separation and transport of mixed-species chains are key elements of the QCCD architecture, and may also be applicable to quantum-logic-based spectroscopy of exotic species.

Control of an atomic quadrupole transition in a phase-stable standing wave

Using a single calcium ion confined in a surface-electrode trap, we study the interaction of electric quadrupole transitions with a passively phase-stable optical standing wave field sourced by photonics integrated within the trap. We characterize the optical fields through spatial mapping of the Rabi frequencies of both carrier and motional sideband transitions as well as AC Stark shifts. Our measurements demonstrate the ability to engineer favorable combinations of sideband and carrier Rabi frequency as well as AC Stark shifts for specific tasks in quantum state control and metrology.

Quantum-torque-induced breaking of magnetic interfaces in ultracold gases

A rich variety of physical effects in spin dynamics arises at the interface between different magnetic materials. Engineered systems with interlaced magnetic structures have been used to implement spin transistors, memories and other spintronic devices. However, experiments in solid state systems can be difficult to interpret because of disorder and losses. Here, we realize analogues of magnetic junctions using a coherently-coupled mixture of ultracold bosonic gases. The spatial inhomogeneity of the atomic gas makes the system change its behavior from regions with oscillating magnetization -- resembling a magnetic material in the presence of an external transverse field -- to regions with a defined magnetization, as in magnetic materials with a ferromagnetic anisotropy stronger than external fields. Starting from a far-from-equilibrium fully polarized state, magnetic interfaces rapidly form. At the interfaces, we observe the formation of short-wavelength magnetic waves. They are generated by a quantum torque contribution to the spin current and produce strong spatial anticorrelations in the magnetization. Our results establish ultracold gases as a platform for the study of far-from-equilibrium spin dynamics in regimes that are not easily accessible in solid-state systems.

Optical visibility and core structure of vortex filaments in a bosonic superfluid

We use optical images of a superfluid consisting of a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms to investigate the structure of quantized three-dimensional vortex filaments. We find that the measured optical contrast and the width of the vortex core quantitatively agree with the predictions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Production of large Bose-Einstein condensates in a magnetic-shield-compatible hybrid trap

We describe the production of large ${}^{23} \mathrm{Na}$ Bose-Einstein condensates in a hybrid trap characterized by a weak magnetic field quadrupole and a tightly focused infrared beam. The use of small magnetic field gradients makes the trap compatible with the state-of-the-art magnetic shields. By taking advantage of the deep cooling and high efficiency of gray molasses to improve the initial trap loading conditions, we produce condensates composed of as much as $7$ million atoms in less than $30 \; \mathrm{s}$.

Spin-Dipole Oscillation and Polarizability of a Binary Bose-Einstein Condensate near the Miscible-Immiscible Phase Transition

We report on the measurement of the spin-dipole (SD) polarizability and of the frequency of the SD oscillation of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms occupying the $|3^2S_{1/2}, F=1, m_F=\pm1\rangle$ hyperfine states. This binary spin-mixture presents the important properties of being, at the same time, fully miscible and rid of the limit set by buoyancy. It is also characterized by a huge enhancement of the SD polarizability and by the consequent softening of the frequency of the SD oscillation, due to the vicinity to the transition to the immiscible phase. The experimental data are successfully compared with the predictions of theory.
