Uniform stability and chaotic dynamics in nonhomogeneous linear dissipative scalar ordinary differential equations

The paper analyzes the structure and the inner long-term dynamics of the invariant compact sets for the skewproduct flow induced by a family of time-dependent ordinary differential equations of nonhomogeneous linear dissipative type. The main assumptions are made on the dissipative term and on the homogeneous linear term of the equations. The rich casuistic includes the uniform stability of the invariant compact sets, as well as the presence of Li-Yorke chaos and Auslander-Yorke chaos inside the attractor.

Non-Atkinson perturbations of nonautonomous linear hamiltonian systems: exponential dichotomy and nonoscillation

We analyze the presence of exponential dichotomy (ED) and of global existence of Weyl functions $M^\pm$ for one-parametric families of finite-dimensional nonautonomous linear Hamiltonian systems defined along the orbits of a compact metric space, which are perturbed from an initial one in a direction which does not satisfy the classical Atkinson condition: either they do not have ED for any value of the parameter; or they have it for at least all the nonreal values, in which case the Weyl functions exist and are Herglotz. When the parameter varies in the real line, and if the unperturbed family satisfies the properties of exponential dichotomy and global existence of $M^+$, then these two properties persist in a neighborhood of 0 which agrees either with the whole real line or with an open negative half-line; and in this last case, the ED fails at the right end value. The properties of ED and of global existence of $M^+$ are fundamental to guarantee the solvability of classical minimization problems given by linear-quadratic control processes.

Probing the String Winding Sector

We probe a slice of the massive winding sector of bosonic string theory from toroidal compactifications of Double Field Theory (DFT). This string subsector corresponds to states containing one left and one right moving oscillators. We perform a generalized Kaluza Klein compactification of DFT on generic $2n$-dimensional toroidal constant backgrounds and show that, up to third order in fluctuations, the theory coincides with the corresponding effective theory of the bosonic string compactified on $n$-dimensional toroidal constant backgrounds, obtained from three-point amplitudes. The comparison between both theories is facilitated by noticing that generalized diffeomorphisms in DFT allow to fix generalized harmonic gauge conditions that help in identifying the physical degrees of freedom. These conditions manifest as conformal anomaly cancellation requirements on the string theory side. The explicit expression for the gauge invariant effective action containing the physical massless sector (gravity+antisymmetric+gauge+ scalar fields) coupled to towers of generalized Kaluza Klein massive states (corresponding to compact momentum and winding modes) is found. The action acquires a very compact form when written in terms of fields carrying $O(n,n)$ indices, and is explicitly T-duality invariant. The global algebra associated to the generalized Kaluza Klein compactification is discussed.
