Hidden symmetries from extra dimensions

In Kaluza-Klein compactifications, some symmetries of the higher dimensional theory are preserved in lower dimensions, others are broken, and occasionally, there are symmetry enhancements. The symmetries that are enhanced by toroidal compactifications were recently shown to define a symmetry principle with constrained parameters that fixes the action before dimensional reduction. Here we show the opposite: symmetries of the higher dimensional theory that are broken in the reduction process, can actually be realized after dimensional reduction as a global symmetry principle with constrained parameters that fixes couplings in the lower dimensional theory. We implement this principle in pure gravity, half-maximal supergravity and the circle reduction of 11 dimensional supergravity to Type IIA superstring theory. As a further application, we show that it can be used to constrain the quartic Ramond-Ramond couplings in Type IIA superstring theory from the four-point $ζ(3)\, α'{}^3\, t_8 t_8 R^{(-) 4}$ interactions.

The Odd story of $α'$-corrections

The $α'$-deformed frame-like Double Field Theory (DFT) is a T-duality and gauge invariant extension of DFT in which generalized Green-Schwarz transformations provide a gauge principle that fixes the higher-derivative corrections. It includes all the first order $α'$-corrections of the bosonic and heterotic string low energy effective actions and of the Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach $α'$-geometry. Here we gauge this theory and parameterize it in terms of a frame, a two-form, a dilaton, gauge vectors and scalar fields. This leads to a unified framework that extends the previous construction by including all duality constrained interactions in generic (gauged/super)gravity effective field theories in arbitrary number of dimensions, to first order in $α'$.

Heterotic $α$'-corrections in Double Field Theory

We extend the generalized flux formulation of Double Field Theory to include all the first order bosonic contributions to the $α'$ expansion of the heterotic string low energy effective theory. The generalized tangent space and duality group are enhanced by $α'$ corrections, and the gauge symmetries are generated by the usual (gauged) generalized Lie derivative in the extended space. The generalized frame receives derivative corrections through the spin connection with torsion, which is incorporated as a new degree of freedom in the extended bein. We compute the generalized fluxes and find the Riemann curvature tensor with torsion as one of their components. All the four-derivative terms of the action, Bianchi identities and equations of motion are reproduced. Using this formalism, we obtain the first order $α'$ corrections to the heterotic Buscher rules. The relation of our results to alternative formulations in the literature is discussed and future research directions are outlined.

Double Field Theory: A Pedagogical Review

Double Field Theory (DFT) is a proposal to incorporate T-duality, a distinctive symmetry of string theory, as a symmetry of a field theory defined on a double configuration space. The aim of this review is to provide a pedagogical presentation of DFT and its applications. We first introduce some basic ideas on T-duality and supergravity in order to proceed to the construction of generalized diffeomorphisms and an invariant action on the double space. Steps towards the construction of a geometry on the double space are discussed. We then address generalized Scherk-Schwarz compactifications of DFT and their connection to gauged supergravity and flux compactifications. We also discuss U-duality extensions, and present a brief parcours on world-sheet approaches to DFT. Finally, we provide a summary of other developments and applications that are not discussed in detail in the review.

Exploring Double Field Theory

We present a flux formulation of Double Field Theory, in which geometric and non-geometric fluxes are dynamical and field-dependent. Gauge consistency imposes a set of quadratic constraints on the dynamical fluxes, which can be solved by truly double configurations. The constraints are related to generalized Bianchi Identities for (non-)geometric fluxes in the double space, sourced by (exotic) branes. Following previous constructions, we then obtain generalized connections, torsion and curvatures compatible with the consistency conditions. The strong constraint-violating terms needed to make contact with gauged supergravities containing duality orbits of non-geometric fluxes, systematically arise in this formulation.

The effective action of Double Field Theory

We perform a generalized Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction of Double Field Theory on a twisted double torus. The four dimensional effective action is shown to exactly reproduce the bosonic electric sector of gauged N = 4 supergravity. We present explicit expressions for the gaugings in terms of the twists, and analyze the associated string backgrounds. This framework provides a higher dimensional origin of the gaugings in terms of generalized fluxes.

On modular properties of the AdS3 CFT

We study modular properties of the AdS3 WZNW model. Although the Euclidean partition function is modular invariant, the characters on the Euclidean torus are ill-defined and their modular transformations are unknown. We reconsider the characters defined on the Lorentzian torus, focusing on their structure as distributions. We find a generalized S matrix, depending on the sign of the real modular parameters, which has two diagonal blocks and one off-diagonal block, mixing discrete and continuous representations, that we fully determine. We then explore the relations among the modular transformations, the fusion algebra and the boundary states. We explicitly construct Ishibashi states for the maximally symmetric D-branes and show that the generalized S matrix defines the one-point functions associated to point-like and H2 branes as well as the fusion rules of the degenerate representations of SL(2,R) appearing in the open string spectrum of the point-like D-branes, through a generalized Verlinde theorem.

Coulomb integrals for the SL(2,R) WZNW model

We review the Coulomb gas computation of three-point functions in the SL(2,R) WZNW model and obtain explicit expressions for generic states. These amplitudes have been computed in the past by this and other methods but the analytic continuation in the number of screening charges required by the Coulomb gas formalism had only been performed in particular cases. After showing that ghost contributions to the correlators can be generally expressed in terms of Schur polynomials we solve Aomoto integrals in the complex plane, a new set of multiple integrals of Dotsenko-Fateev type. We then make use of monodromy invariance to analytically continue the number of screening operators and prove that this procedure gives results in complete agreement with the amplitudes obtained from the bootstrap approach. We also compute a four-point function involving a spectral flow operator and we verify that it leads to the one unit spectral flow three-point function according to a prescription previously proposed in the literature. In addition, we present an alternative method to obtain spectral flow non-conserving n-point functions through well defined operators and we prove that it reproduces the exact correlators for n=3. Independence of the result on the insertion points of these operators suggests that it is possible to violate winding number conservation modifying the background charge.

Four Point Functions in the SL(2,R) WZW Model

We consider winding conserving four point functions in the SL(2,R) WZW model for states in arbitrary spectral flow sectors. We compute the leading order contribution to the expansion of the amplitudes in powers of the cross ratio of the four points on the worldsheet, both in the m- and x-basis, with at least one state in the spectral flow image of the highest weight discrete representation. We also perform certain consistency check on the winding conserving three point functions.

Winding Strings in AdS_3

Correlation functions of one unit spectral flowed states in string theory on AdS_3 are considered. We present the modified Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov and null vector equations to be satisfied by amplitudes containing states in winding sector one and study their solution corresponding to the four point function including one w=1 field. We compute the three point function involving two one unit spectral flowed operators and find expressions for amplitudes of three w=1 states satisfying certain particular relations among the spins of the fields. Several consistency checks are performed.

Correlators in AdS_3 string theory

The computation of two and three point functions in the Coulomb gas free field approach to string theory in the SL(2,R)/U(1) black hole background is reviewed. An interesting relation arises when comparing the results obtained using two different screening operators. The formalism is then modified to study string theory propagating in AdS$_3$ which is considered as the direct product of the SL(2)/U(1) coset times a timelike free boson. This representation allows to naturally include the spectral flow symmetry and winding number in vertex operators and correlation functions. Two and three point tachyon amplitudes are computed in this new scenario and the results coincide with previous reports in the literature. Novel expressions are found for processes violating winding number conservation.

Aspects of the free field description of string theory on AdS_3

The near boundary limit of string theory in AdS_3 is analysed using the Wakimoto free field representation of SL(2,R). The theory is considered as a direct product of the SL(2,R)/U(1) coset and a free boson. Correlation functions are constructed generalizing to the non-compact case the integral representation of conformal blocks introduced by Dotsenko in the compact SU(2) CFT. Sectors of the theory obtained by spectral flow manifestly appear. The formalism naturally leads to consider scattering processes violating winding number conservation. The consistency of the procedure is verified in the factorization limit.

Fusion Rules in N=1 Superconformal Minimal Models

The generalization to N=1 superconformal minimal models of the relation between the modular transformation matrix and the fusion rules in rational conformal field theories, the Verlinde theorem, is shown to provide complete information about the fusion rules, including their fermionic parity. The results for the superconformal Tricritical Ising and Ashkin-Teller models agree with the known rational conformal formulation. The Coulomb gas description of correlation functions in the Ramond sector of N=1 minimal models is also discussed and a previous formulation is completed.

Interaction of D-branes on orbifolds and massless particle emission

We discuss various D-brane configurations in 4-dimensional orbifold compactifications of type II superstring theory which are point-like 0-branes from the 4-dimensional space-time point of view. We analyze their interactions and compute the amplitude for the emission of a massless NSNS boson from them, in the case where the branes have a non vanishing relative velocity. In the large distance limit, we compare our computation to the expected field theory results, finding complete agreement.

Aspects of D-brane dynamics on orbifolds

We discuss D-brane dynamics in orbifold compactifications of type II superstring theory. We compute the interaction potential between two D-branes moving with constant velocities and give a field theory interpretation of it in the large distance limit.

Closed string radiation from moving D-branes

We compute the amplitude for the radiation of massless NS-NS closed string states from the interaction of two moving D-branes. We consider particle-like D-branes with reference to 4-dimensional spacetime, in toroidal and orbifold compactifications, and we work out the relevant world sheet propagators within the moving boundary state formalism. We find no on-shell axion emission. For large inter-brane separation, we compute the spacetime graviton emission amplitude and estimate the average energy radiated, whereas the spacetime dilaton amplitude is found to vanish in this limit. The possibility of emission of other massless states depends on the nature of the branes and of the compactification scheme.

Cyclic Permutations in Kazama-Suzuki String Models

Moddings by cyclic permutation symmetries are performed in 4-dimensional strings, built up from N=2 coset models of the type $CP_m=SU(m+1)/SU(m)\times U(1)$. For some exemplifying cases, the massless chiral and antichiral states of $E_6$ are computed. The extent of the equivalence between different conformal invariant theories which possess equal chiral rings is analyzed.
