Existence and Stability of Standing Pulses in Neural Networks : I Existence

We consider the existence of standing pulse solutions of a neural network integro-differential equation. These pulses are bistable with the zero state and may be an analogue for short term memory in the brain. The network consists of a single-layer of neurons synaptically connected by lateral inhibition. Our work extends the classic Amari result by considering a non-saturating gain function. We consider a specific connectivity function where the existence conditions for single-pulses can be reduced to the solution of an algebraic system. In addition to the two localized pulse solutions found by Amari, we find that three or more pulses can coexist. We also show the existence of nonconvex ``dimpled'' pulses and double pulses. We map out the pulse shapes and maximum firing rates for different connection weights and gain functions.

Hydrodynamics of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky Equation in Two Dimensions

The large scale properties of spatiotemporal chaos in the 2d Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation are studied using an explicit coarse graining scheme. A set of intermediate equations are obtained. They describe interactions between the small scale (e.g., cellular) structures and the hydrodynamic degrees of freedom. Possible forms of the effective large scale hydrodynamics are constructed and examined. Although a number of different universality classes are allowed by symmetry, numerical results support the simplest scenario, that being the KPZ universality class.

Frequency control in synchronized networks of inhibitory neurons

We analyze the control of frequency for a synchronized inhibitory neuronal network. The analysis is done for a reduced membrane model with a biophysically-based synaptic influence. We argue that such a reduced model can quantitatively capture the frequency behavior of a larger class of neuronal models. We show that in different parameter regimes, the network frequency depends in different ways on the intrinsic and synaptic time constants. Only in one portion of the parameter space, called `phasic', is the network period proportional to the synaptic decay time. These results are discussed in connection with previous work of the authors, which showed that for mildly heterogeneous networks, the synchrony breaks down, but coherence is preserved much more for systems in the phasic regime than in the other regimes. These results imply that for mildly heterogeneous networks, the existence of a coherent rhythm implies a linear dependence of the network period on synaptic decay time, and a much weaker dependence on the drive to the cells. We give experimental evidence for this conclusion.

Phase-locking in weakly heterogeneous neuronal networks

We examine analytically the existence and stability of phase-locked states in a weakly heterogeneous neuronal network. We consider a model of N neurons with all-to-all synaptic coupling where the heterogeneity is in the firing frequency or intrinsic drive of the neurons. We consider both inhibitory and excitatory coupling. We derive the conditions under which stable phase-locking is possible. In homogeneous networks, many different periodic phase-locked states are possible. Their stability depends on the dynamics of the neuron and the coupling. For weak heterogeneity, the phase-locked states are perturbed from the homogeneous states and can remain stable if their homogeneous conterparts are stable. For enough heterogeneity, phase-locked solutions either lose stability or are destroyed completely. We analyze the possible states the network can take when phase-locking is broken.

A Pinned Polymer Model of Posture Control

A phenomenological model of human posture control is posited. The dynamics are modelled as an elastically pinned polymer under the influence of noise. The model accurately reproduces the two-point correlation functions of experimental posture data and makes predictions for the response function of the postural control system. The physiological and clinical significance of the model is discussed.

Defect-Mediated Stability: An Effective Hydrodynamic Theory of Spatio-Temporal Chaos

Spatiotemporal chaos (STC) exhibited by the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KS) equation is investigated analytically and numerically. An effective stochastic equation belonging to the KPZ universality class is constructed by incorporating the chaotic dynamics of the small KS system in a coarse-graining procedure. The bare parameters of the effective theory are computed approximately. Stability of the system is shown to be mediated by space-time defects that are accompanied by stochasticity. The method of analysis and the mechanism of stability may be relevant to a class of STC problems.
