Exact diagonalization study of the trionic crossover and the trion liquid in the attractive three-component Hubbard model

We investigate the trion formation and the effective trionic properties in the attractive Hubbard model with three fermionic colors using exact diagonalization. The crossover to the trionic regime with colorless compound fermions upon increasing strength of the onsite attraction parameter U features smoothly evolving ground state properties and exhibits clear similarities to the BCS/BEC-crossover for two colors. In the excitation spectrum, there is a clear gap opening between a band of well-defined trions and excitations of broken-up trions at U_c ~ 1.8t. This picture remains the same away from the SU(3)-symmetric point. The spatial pairing correlations for colored Cooper pairs are compatible with a power-law at small attractions and change to an exponential decay above the trionic crossover. Furthermore, we show that the effective trionic liquid for U > U_c can be well modeled with spinless 'heavy' fermions interacting with a strong nearest neighbor repulsion.

Effective low-energy Hamiltonians for interacting nanostructures

We present a functional renormalization group (fRG) treatment of trigonal graphene nanodiscs and composites thereof, modeled by finite-size Hubbard-like Hamiltonians with honeycomb lattice structure. At half filling, the noninteracting spectrum of these structures contains a certain number of half-filled states at the Fermi level. For the case of trigonal nanodiscs, including interactions between these degenerate states was argued to lead to a large ground state spin with potential spintronics applications. Here we perform a systematic fRG flow where the excited single-particle states are integrated out with a decreasing energy cutoff, yielding a renormalized low-energy Hamiltonian for the zero-energy states that includes effects of the excited levels. The numerical implementation corroborates the results obtained with a simpler Hartree-Fock treatment of the interaction effects within the zero-energy states only. In particular, for trigonal nanodiscs the degeneracy of the one-particle-states with zero-energy turns out to be very robust against influences of the higher levels. As an explanation, we give a general argument that within this fRG scheme the zero-energy degeneracy remains unsplit under quite general conditions and for any size of the trigonal nanodisc. We furthermore discuss the differences in the effective Hamiltonian and their ground states of single nanodiscs and composite bow-tie-shaped systems.

Doping-dependent pairing symmetry in the Iron-Pnictides

We use the functional renormalization group method to analyze the phase diagram of a 4-band model for the iron-pnictides subject to band interactions with certain A_{1g} momentum dependence. We determine the parameter regimes where an extended s-wave pairing instability with and without nodes emerges. On the electron-doped side, the parameter regime in which a nodal gap appears is found to be much narrower than recently predicted in arXiv:0903.5547. On the hole-doped side, the extended s-wave pairing never becomes nodal: above a critical strength of the intra-band repulsion, the system favors an exotic extended d-wave instability on the enlarged hole pockets at much lower T_c. At half filling, we find that a strong momentum dependence of inter-band pair hopping yields an extended s-wave instability instead of spin-density wave (SDW) ordering. These results demonstrate that an interaction anisotropy around the Fermi surfaces generally leads to a pronounced sensitivity of the pairing state on the system parameters.

Pairing in the iron arsenides: a functional RG treatment

We study the phase diagram of a microscopic model for the superconducting iron arsenides by means of a functional renormalization group. Our treatment establishes a connection between a strongly simplified two-patch model by Chubukov et al. and a five-band- analysis by Wang et al.. For a wide parameter range, the dominant pairing instability occurs in the extended s-wave channel. The results clearly show the relevance of pair scattering between electron and hole pockets. We also give arguments that the phase transition between the antiferromagnetic phase for the undoped system and the superconducting phase may be first order.

Density waves and Cooper pairing on the honeycomb lattice

Motivated by the surge in research activities on graphene, we investigate instabilities of electrons on the honeycomb lattice, interacting by onsite and nearest-neighbor terms, using a renormalization group scheme. Near half band-filling, critical minimal interaction strengths are required for instabilities toward antiferromagnetic or charge-density wave order. Away from half filling, f-wave triplet pairing and d+id singlet pairing instabilities are found to emerge out of density-wave regimes.

Color Superfluidity and "Baryon" Formation in Ultracold Fermions

We study fermionic atoms of three different internal quantum states (colors) in an optical lattice, which are interacting through attractive on site interactions, U<0. Using a variational calculation for equal color densities and small couplings, |U| < |U_C|, a color superfluid state emerges with a tendency to domain formation. For |U| > |U_C|, triplets of atoms with different colors form singlet fermions (trions). These phases are the analogies of the color superconducting and baryonic phases in QCD. In ultracold fermions, this transition is found to be of second order. Our results demonstrate that quantum simulations with ultracold gases may shed light on outstanding problems in quantum field theory.

Plaquette bond order wave in the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice

An extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor repulsion and antiferromagnetic spin exchange) is investigated on the frustrated checkerboard lattice, a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice. Combining Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field (MF) calculations, exact diagonalization (ED) techniques, and a weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) analysis we provide strong evidence for a crystalline valence bond plaquette phase at quarter-filling. The ground state is twofold degenerate and breaks translation symmetry. The bond energies show a staggering while the charge distribution remains uniform.

Phonons and d-wave pairing in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We analyze the influence of phonons on the d-wave pairing instability in the Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice at weak to moderate interaction U, using a functional renormalization group scheme with frequency-dependent interaction vertices. As measured by the pairing scale, the B1g buckling mode enhances the pairing, while other phonon modes decrease the pairing. When various phonon modes are included together, the net effect on the scale is small. However, in situations where d-wave superconductivity and other tendencies, e.g. antiferromagnetism, are closely competing, the combined effect of different phonons may be able to tip the balance towards pairing.

Fermionic renormalization group flow into phases with broken discrete symmetry: charge-density wave mean-field model

We generalize the application of the functional renormalization group (fRG) method for the fermionic flow into the symmetry-broken phase to finite temperatures. We apply the scheme to the case of a broken discrete symmetry: the charge-density wave (CDW) mean-field model at half filling. We show how an arbitrarily small initial CDW order parameter starts to grow at the CDW instability and how it flows to the correct final value, suppressing the divergence of the effective interaction in the fRG flow. The effective interaction peaks at the instability and saturates at low energy scales or temperatures. The relation to the mean-field treatment, differences compared to the flow for a broken continuous symmetry, and the prospects of the new method are discussed.

Renormalization Group Study of the Electron-phonon Interaction in the High Tc Cuprates

We generalize the numerical renormalization group scheme to study the phonon-mediated retarded interactions in the high Tc cuprates. We find that three sets of phonon-mediated retarded quasiparticle scatterings grow under RG flow. These scatterings share the following common features: 1) the initial and final quasiparticle momenta are in the antinodal regions, and 2) the scattering amplitudes have a $x^2-y^2$ symmetry. All three sets of retarded interaction are driven to strong coupling by the magnetic fluctuations around $(π,π)$. After growing strong, these retarded interaction will trigger density wave orders with d-wave symmetry. However, due to the d-wave form factor they will leave the nodal quasiparticle unaffected. We conclude that the main effect of electron-phonon coupling in the cuprates is to promote these density wave orders.

Charge instabilities at the metamagnetic transition

We investigate instabilities in the charge channel in the vicinity of (meta-)magnetic transitions of itinerant electron systems. Based on a weak coupling analysis we argue that in a one-band $t$-$t'$ Hubbard model near the van Hove filling and dominant ferromagnetic fluctuations it is difficult to account for a microscopic mechanism for a d-wave Pomeranchuk deformation of the Fermi surface. A similar deformation has been considered for the metamagnetic transition in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. As an alternative we discuss the possibility of charge inhomogeneity on the nano scale. This extends the analogy of the metamagnetic transition to a liquid-gas transition.

Eliashberg equations derived from the functional renormalization group

We describe how the fermionic functional renormalization group (fRG) flow of a Cooper+forward scattering problem can be continued into the superconducting state. This allows us to reproduce from the fRG flow the fundamental equations of the Eliashberg theory for superconductivity at all temperatures including the symmetry-broken phase. We discuss possible extensions of this approach like the inclusion of vertex corrections.

Functional renormalization group in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We review recent developments in functional renormalization group (RG) methods for interacting fermions. These approaches aim at obtaining an unbiased picture of competing Fermi liquid instabilities in the low-dimensional models like the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We discuss how these instabilities can be approached from various sides and how the fermionic RG flow can be continued into phases with broken symmetry.

Renormalization group flows into phases with broken symmetry

We describe a way to continue the fermionic renormalization group flow into phases with broken global symmetry. The method does not require a Hubbard-Stratonovich decoupling of the interaction. Instead an infinitesimally small symmetry-breaking component is inserted in the initial action, as an initial condition for the flow of the selfenergy. Its flow is driven by the interaction and at low scales it saturates at a nonzero value if there is a tendency for spontaneous symmetry breaking in the corresponding channel. For the reduced BCS model we show how a small initial gap amplitude flows to the value given by the exact solution of the model. We also discuss the emergence of the Goldstone boson in this approach.

Interaction flow method for many-fermion systems

We propose an interaction flow scheme that sums up the perturbation expansion of many-particle systems by successively increasing the interaction strength. It combines the unbiasedness of renormalization group methods with the simplicity of straight-forward perturbation theory. Applying the scheme to fermions in one dimension and to the two-dimensional Hubbard model we find that at one-loop level and low temperatures there is ample agreement with previous one-loop renormalization group approaches. We furthermore present results for the momentum-dependence of spin, charge and pairing interactions in the two-dimensional Hubbard model.

BCS pairing in Fermi systems with several flavors

Motivated by the prospect of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in cold fermionic gases we analyze the superfluid phase of 3 fermionic flavors in the attractive Hubbard model. We show that there are several low--lying collective pairing modes and investigate their damping due to the partially gapless nature of the single-particle spectrum. Furthermore we analyze how these modes show up in the density response of the system. Apart from the Anderson-Bogoliubov phase mode of the pairing between two flavors, the dynamical structure factor contains signatures of the gapless third flavor. This picture is found to be robust against perturbations that break the global SU(3)-symmetry of the Hamiltonian.

Staggered flux vortices and the superconducting transition in the layered cuprates

We propose an effective model for the superconducting transition in the high-T_c cuprates motivated by the SU(2) gauge theory approach. In addition to variations of the superconducting phase we allow for local admixture of staggered flux order. This leads to an unbinding transition of vortices with staggered flux core that are energetically preferable to conventional vortices. Based on parameter estimates for the two-dimensional t-J model we argue that the staggered flux vortices provide a way to understand a phase with a moderate density of mobile vortices over a large temperature range above T_c that yet exhibits otherwise normal transport properties. This picture is consistent with the large Nernst signal observed in this region.

Ultracold fermions and the SU(N) Hubbard model

We investigate the fermionic SU(N) Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice for weak to moderate interaction strengths using one-loop renormalization group and mean-field methods. For the repulsive case U>0 at half filling and small N the dominant tendency is towards breaking of the SU(N) symmetry. For N>6 staggered flux order takes over as the dominant instability, in agreement with the large-N limit. Away from half filling for N=3 the system rearranges the particle densities such that two flavors remain half filled by cannibalizing the third flavor. In the attractive case and odd N a full Fermi surface coexists with a superconductor in the ground state. These results may be relevant to future experiments with cold fermionic atoms in optical lattices.
