Periodic metal resonator chains for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)

A periodic arrangement of chains of gold discs shows pronounced plasmonic grating resonances. These have a clear impact on the Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)-signal from 4-methylbenzenethiol molecules which form self-assembled monolayers on the gold surface: Besides a clear polarisation dependence the SERS-spectra also exhibit a maximum when the excitation laser wavelength matches the plamonic grating resonance. These features are explained by a combined near and far field coupling of the individual plasmonic dipoles allowing the design of optimized nanostructures for effective SERS-substrates in the future.

Surface Plasmon Assisted Gentle Ablation of Nanostructures by Femtosecond Oscillator

We experimentally demonstrate the use of subwavelength optical nanoantennae to assist the gentle ablation of nanostructures directly using ultralow fluence from a Ti: sapphire oscillator through the excitation of surface plasmon waves. We show that this ablation mechanism is the same for metal and dielectric. The analytical solutions of ablation threshold are in excellent agreement with the experiment estimations. Surface plasmon assisted locally enhanced ablation at nanoscale provides a method for nanomachining, manipulation and modification the nanostructures without collateral thermal damage to the materials. It is also shown that this ablation can deposit low-density high quality thin nano film.

Photonic bandgap plasmonic waveguides

A novel type of a plasmonic waveguide has been proposed featuring an "open" design that is easy to manufacture, simple to excite and that offers a convenient access to a plasmonic mode. Optical properties of photonic bandgap (PBG) plasmonic waveguides are investigated experimentally by leakage radiation microscopy and numerically using the finite element method confirming photonic bandgap guidance in a broad spectral range. Propagation and localization characteristics of a PBG plasmonic waveguide have been discussed as a function of the wavelength of operation, waveguide core size and the number of ridges in the periodic reflector for fundamental and higher order plasmonic modes of the waveguide.
