A Symbolic Summation Approach to Find Optimal Nested Sum Representations

We consider the following problem: Given a nested sum expression, find a sum representation such that the nested depth is minimal. We obtain a symbolic summation framework that solves this problem for sums defined, e.g., over hypergeometric, $q$-hypergeometric or mixed hypergeometric expressions. Recently, our methods have found applications in quantum field theory.

Parameterized Telescoping Proves Algebraic Independence of Sums

Usually creative telescoping is used to derive recurrences for sums. In this article we show that the non-existence of a creative telescoping solution, and more generally, of a parameterized telescoping solution, proves algebraic independence of certain types of sums. Combining this fact with summation-theory shows transcendence of whole classes of sums. Moreover, this result throws new light on the question why, e.g., Zeilberger's algorithm fails to find a recurrence with minimal order.

A Refined Difference Field Theory for Symbolic Summation

In this article we present a refined summation theory based on Karr's difference field approach. The resulting algorithms find sum representations with optimal nested depth. For instance, the algorithms have been applied successively to evaluate Feynman integrals from Perturbative Quantum Field Theory.

Two--Loop Massive Operator Matrix Elements for Unpolarized Heavy Flavor Production to $O(ε)

We calculate the $O(α_s^2)$ massive operator matrix elements for the twist--2 operators, which contribute to the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients in unpolarized deeply inelastic scattering in the region $Q^2 \gg m^2$, up to the $O(ε)$ contributions. These terms contribute through the renormalization of the $O(α_s^3)$ heavy flavor Wilson coefficients of the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$. The calculation has been performed using light--cone expansion techniques without using the integration-by-parts method. We represent the individual Feynman diagrams by generalized hypergeometric structures, the $ε$--expansion of which leads to infinite sums depending on the Mellin variable $N$. These sums are finally expressed in terms of nested harmonic sums using the general summation techniques implemented in the {\tt Sigma} package.

Gaussian hypergeometric series and supercongruences

Let p be an odd prime. In 1984, Greene introduced the notion of hypergeometric functions over finite fields. Special values of these functions have been of interest as they are related to the number of F_p points on algebraic varieties and to Fourier coefficients of modular forms. In this paper, we explicitly determine these functions modulo higher powers of p and discuss an application to supercongruences. This application uses two non-trivial generalized Harmonic sum identities discovered using the computer summation package Sigma. We illustrate the usage of Sigma in the discovery and proof of these two identities.

Strangeness in the Scalar Form Factor of the Nucleon

The scalar form factor of the nucleon and related physical quantities are investigated in the framework of the semibosonized SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio soliton model. We take into account the rotational $1/N_c$ corrections and linear $m_s$ corrections. The strangeness content of the nucleon in the scalar form factor is discussed in detail. In particular, it is found that the $m_s$ corrections play an essential role of reducing the $\langle N | \bar{s} s | N \rangle$ arising from the leading order and rotational $1/N_c$ contributions. We obtain the $σ_{πN} (0)=40.80\;\mbox{MeV}$, $Δσ= σ_{πN} (2m^{2}_π)-σ_{πN} (0) = 18.18\;\mbox{MeV}$ and $\langle r^2\rangle^{S}_{N} = 1.50\;\mbox{fm}^2$. The results are in a remarkable agreement with empirical data analyzed by Gasser, Leutwyler, and Sainio~\cite{gls}.
