Modular2Simple: A Tool for Modular Scenario Creation Based on the OpenSCENARIO Format

The rapid advancement of autonomous driving systems (ADS) has introduced significant challenges, particularly in the creation of realistic and complex scenarios for testing and validation. This paper introduces Modular2Simple, a tool designed to address these challenges by simplifying and enhancing the process of creating complex ADS scenarios. Modular2Simple seamlessly integrates with the CARLA simulator and is applicable to any software that supports the OpenSCENARIO format. By leveraging existing simple scenarios in the OpenSCENARIO format, the tool enables developers to create easily customizable modular scenarios through the combination of multiple simple or modular scenarios, significantly simplifying the scenario creation process while maintaining flexibility in scenario design. This approach not only facilitates the development of complex scenarios, reducing both development time and effort, but also promotes scenario reuse and customization, which leads to a significant reduction in code complexity and enhanced efficiency in scenario design and testing compared to traditional scenario development methods.

Efficient Analysis of Unambiguous Automata Using Matrix Semigroup Techniques

We introduce a novel technique to analyse unambiguous Büchi automata quantitatively, and apply this to the model checking problem. It is based on linear-algebra arguments that originate from the analysis of matrix semigroups with constant spectral radius. This method can replace a combinatorial procedure that dominates the computational complexity of the existing procedure by Baier et al. We analyse the complexity in detail, showing that, in terms of the set $Q$ of states of the automaton, the new algorithm runs in time $O(|Q|^4)$, improving on an efficient implementation of the combinatorial algorithm by a factor of $|Q|$.

ISS-Scenario: Scenario-based Testing in CARLA

The rapidly evolving field of autonomous driving systems (ADSs) is full of promise. However, in order to fulfil these promises, ADSs need to be safe in all circumstances. This paper introduces ISS-Scenario, an autonomous driving testing framework in the paradigm of scenario-based testing. ISS-Scenario is designed for batch testing, exploration of test cases (e.g., potentially dangerous scenarios), and performance evaluation of autonomous vehicles (AVs). ISS-Scenario includes a diverse simulation scenario library with parametrized design. Furthermore, ISS-Scenario integrates two testing methods within the framework: random sampling and optimized search by means of a genetic algorithm. Finally, ISS-Scenario provides an accident replay feature, saving a log file for each test case which allows developers to replay and dissect scenarios where the ADS showed problematic behavior.

Dimensionality Reduction for General KDE Mode Finding

Finding the mode of a high dimensional probability distribution $D$ is a fundamental algorithmic problem in statistics and data analysis. There has been particular interest in efficient methods for solving the problem when $D$ is represented as a mixture model or kernel density estimate, although few algorithmic results with worst-case approximation and runtime guarantees are known. In this work, we significantly generalize a result of (LeeLiMusco:2021) on mode approximation for Gaussian mixture models. We develop randomized dimensionality reduction methods for mixtures involving a broader class of kernels, including the popular logistic, sigmoid, and generalized Gaussian kernels. As in Lee et al.'s work, our dimensionality reduction results yield quasi-polynomial algorithms for mode finding with multiplicative accuracy $(1-ε)$ for any $ε> 0$. Moreover, when combined with gradient descent, they yield efficient practical heuristics for the problem. In addition to our positive results, we prove a hardness result for box kernels, showing that there is no polynomial time algorithm for finding the mode of a kernel density estimate, unless $\mathit{P} = \mathit{NP}$. Obtaining similar hardness results for kernels used in practice (like Gaussian or logistic kernels) is an interesting future direction.

Image-Binary Automata

We introduce a certain restriction of weighted automata over the rationals, called image-binary automata. We show that such automata accept the regular languages, can be exponentially more succinct than corresponding NFAs, and allow for polynomial complementation, union, and intersection. This compares favourably with unambiguous automata whose complementation requires a superpolynomial state blowup. We also study an infinite-word version, image-binary Büchi automata. We show that such automata are amenable to probabilistic model checking, similarly to unambiguous Büchi automata. We provide algorithms to translate $k$-ambiguous Büchi automata to image-binary Büchi automata, leading to model-checking algorithms with optimal computational complexity.

Linear-Time Model Checking Branching Processes

(Multi-type) branching processes are a natural and well-studied model for generating random infinite trees. Branching processes feature both nondeterministic and probabilistic branching, generalizing both transition systems and Markov chains (but not generally Markov decision processes). We study the complexity of model checking branching processes against linear-time omega-regular specifications: is it the case almost surely that every branch of a tree randomly generated by the branching process satisfies the omega-regular specification? The main result is that for LTL specifications this problem is in PSPACE, subsuming classical results for transition systems and Markov chains, respectively. The underlying general model-checking algorithm is based on the automata-theoretic approach, using unambiguous Büchi automata.
