All-optical coherent population trapping with defect spin ensembles in silicon carbide

Divacancy defects in silicon carbide have long-lived electronic spin states and sharp optical transitions, with properties that are similar to the nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond. We report experiments on 4H-SiC that investigate all-optical addressing of spin states with the zero-phonon-line transitions. Our magneto-spectroscopy results identify the spin $S=1$ structure of the ground and excited state, and a role for decay via intersystem crossing. We use these results for demonstrating coherent population trapping of spin states with divacancy ensembles that have particular orientations in the SiC crystal.

Two-laser dynamic nuclear polarization with semiconductor electrons: feedback, suppressed fluctuations, and bistability near two-photon resonance

We present how optical coherent population trapping (CPT) of the spin of localized semiconductor electrons stabilizes the surrounding nuclear spin bath via the hyperfine interaction, resulting in a state which is more ordered than the thermal equilibrium state. We find distinct control regimes for different signs of laser detuning and examine the transition from an unpolarized, narrowed state to a polarized state possessing a bistability. The narrowing of the state yields slower electron spin dephasing and self-improving CPT. Our analysis is relevant for a variety of solid state systems where hyperfine-induced dephasing is a limitation for using electron spin coherence.

Capacitive coupling of atomic systems to mesoscopic conductors

We describe a technique that enables a strong, coherent coupling between isolated neutral atoms and mesoscopic conductors. The coupling is achieved by exciting atoms trapped above the surface of a superconducting transmission line into Rydberg states with large electric dipole moments, that induce voltage fluctuations in the transmission line. Using a mechanism analogous to cavity quantum electrodynamics an atomic state can be transferred to a long-lived mode of the fluctuating voltage, atoms separated by millimeters can be entangled, or the quantum state of a solid state device can be mapped onto atomic or photonic states.

Engineering decoherence in Josephson persistent-current qubits

We discuss the relaxation and dephasing rates that result from the control and the measurement setup itself in experiments on Josephson persistent-current qubits. For control and measurement of the qubit state, the qubit is inductively coupled to electromagnetic circuitry. We show how this system can be mapped on the spin-boson model, and how the spectral density of the bosonic bath can be derived from the electromagnetic impedance that is coupled to the qubit. Part of the electromagnetic environment is a measurement apparatus (DC-SQUID), that is permanently coupled to the single quantum system that is studied. Since there is an obvious conflict between long coherence times and an efficient measurement scheme, the measurement process is analyzed in detail for different measurement schemes. We show, that the coupling of the measurement apparatus to the qubit can be controlled in situ. Parameters that can be realized in experiments today are used for a quantitative evaluation, and it is shown that the relaxation and dephasing rates that are induced by the measurement setup can be made low enough for a time-resolved study of the quantum dynamics of Josephson persistent-current qubits. Our results can be generalized as engineering rules for the read-out of related qubit systems.

Decoherence of the Superconducting Persistent Current Qubit

Decoherence of a solid state based qubit can be caused by coupling to microscopic degrees of freedom in the solid. We lay out a simple theory and use it to estimate decoherence for a recently proposed superconducting persistent current design. All considered sources of decoherence are found to be quite weak, leading to a high quality factor for this qubit.

A Superconducting Persistent Current Qubit

We present the design of a superconducting qubit that has circulating currents of opposite sign as its two states. The circuit consists of three nano-scale aluminum Josephson junctions connected in a superconducting loop and controlled by magnetic fields. The advantages of this qubit are that it can be made insensitive to background charges in the substrate, the flux in the two states can be detected with a SQUID, and the states can be manipulated with magnetic fields. Coupled systems of qubits are also discussed as well as sources of decoherence.
