Classes of contractions and Harnack domination

Several properties of the Harnack domination of linear operators acting on Hilbert space with norm less or equal than one are studied. Thus, the maximal elements for this relation are identified as precisely the singular unitary operators, while the minimal elements are shown to be the isometries and the adjoints of isometries. We also show how a large range of properties (e.g. convergence of iterates, peripheral spectrum, ergodic properties) are transfered from a contraction to one that Harnack dominates it.

Ritt operators and convergence in the method of alternating projections

Given $N\ge2$ closed subspaces $M_1,\dotsc, M_N$ of a Hilbert space $X$, let $P_k$ denote the orthogonal projection onto $M_k$, $1\le k\le N$. It is known that the sequence $(x_n)$, defined recursively by $x_0=x$ and $x_{n+1}=P_N\cdots P_1x_n$ for $n\ge0$, converges in norm to $P_Mx$ as $n\to\infty$ for all $x\in X$, where $P_M$ denotes the orthogonal projection onto $M=M_1\cap\dotsc\cap M_N$. Moreover, the rate of convergence is either exponentially fast for all $x\in X$ or as slow as one likes for appropriately chosen initial vectors $x\in X$. We give a new estimate in terms of natural geometric quantities on the rate of convergence in the case when it is known to be exponentially fast. More importantly, we then show that even when the rate of convergence is arbitrarily slow there exists, for each real number $α>0$, a dense subset $X_α$ of $X$ such that $\|x_n-P_Mx\|=o(n^{-α})$ as $n\to\infty$ for all $x\in X_α$. Furthermore, there exists another dense subset $X_\infty$ of $X$ such that, if $x\in X_\infty$, then $\|x_n-P_Mx\|=o(n^{-α})$ as $n\to\infty$ for all $α>0$. These latter results are obtained as consequences of general properties of Ritt operators. As a by-product, we also strengthen the unquantified convergence result by showing that $P_M x$ is in fact the limit of a series which converges unconditionally.

Spectral Sets

This is a survey about spectral sets, to appear in the second edition of Handbook of Linear Algebra (L. Hogben, ed.). Spectral sets and K-spectral sets, introduced by John von Neumann, offer a possibility to estimate the norm of functions of matrices in terms of the sup-norm of the function. Examples of such spectral sets include the numerical range or the pseudospectrum of a matrix, discussed in Chapters 16 and 18. Estimating the norm of functions of matrices is an essential task in numerous fields of pure and applied mathematics, such as (numerical) linear algebra, functional analysis, and numerical analysis. More specific examples include probability, semi-groups and existence results for operator-valued differential equations, the study of numerical schemes for the time discretization of evolution equations, or the convergence rate of GMRES (Section 41.7). The notion of spectral sets involves many deep connections between linear algebra, operator theory, approximation theory, and complex analysis.

Numerical radius and distance from unitary operators

Denote by w(A) the numerical radius of a bounded linear operator A acting on Hilbert space. Suppose that A is invertible and that the numerical radius of A and of its inverse are no greater than 1+e for some non-negative e. It is shown that the distance of A from unitary operators is less or equal than a constant times $e^{1/4}$. This generalizes a result due to J.G. Stampfli, which is obtained for e = 0. An example is given showing that the exponent 1/4 is optimal. The more general case of the operator $ρ$-radius is discussed for $ρ$ between 1 and 2.

Geometric, spectral and asymptotic properties of averaged products of projections in Banach spaces

According to the von Neumann-Halperin and Lapidus theorems, in a Hilbert space the iterates of products or, respectively, of convex combinations of orthoprojections are strongly convergent. We extend these results to the iterates of convex combinations of products of some projections in a complex Banach space. The latter is assumed uniformly convex or uniformly smooth for the orthoprojections, or reflexive for more special projections, in particular, for the hermitian ones. In all cases the proof of convergence is based on a known criterion in terms of the boundary spectrum.

The rate of convergence in the method of alternating projections

A generalization of the cosine of the Friedrichs angle between two subspaces to a parameter associated to several closed subspaces of a Hilbert space is given. This parameter is used to analyze the rate of convergence in the von Neumann-Halperin method of cyclic alternating projections. General dichotomy theorems are proved, in the Hilbert or Banach space situation, providing conditions under which the alternative QUC/ASC (quick uniform convergence versus arbitrarily slow convergence) holds. Several meanings for ASC are proposed.

Intersections of several disks of the Riemann sphere as K-spectral sets

We prove that if $n$ closed disks $D_1, D_2, ..., D_n$, of the Riemann sphere are spectral sets for a bounded linear operator $A$ on a Hilbert space, then their intersection $D_1\cap D_2...\cap D_n$ is a complete $K$-spectral set for $A$, with $K\leq n+n(n-1)/\sqrt3$. When $n=2$ and the intersection $X_1\cap X_2$ is an annulus, this result gives a positive answer to a question of A.L. Shields (1974).

K-spectral sets and intersections of disks of the Riemann sphere

We prove that if two closed disks X_1 and X_2 of the Riemann sphere are spectral sets for a bounded linear operator A on a Hilbert space, then the intersection X_1\cap X_2 is a complete (2+2/\sqrt{3})-spectral set for A. When the intersection of X_1 and X_2 is an annulus, this result gives a positive answer to a question of A.L. Shields (1974).

Growth conditions and inverse producing extensions

We study the invertibility of Banach algebras elements in their extensions, and invertible extensions of Banach and Hilbert space operators with prescribed growth conditions for the norm of inverses. As applications, the solutions of two open problems are obtained. In the first one we give a characterization of E(T)-subscalar operators in terms of growth conditions. In the second one we show that operators satisfying a Beurling-type growth condition possess Bishop's property beta. Other applications are also given.

Convex domains and K-spectral sets

Let $Ω$ be an open convex domain of the complex plane. We study constants K such that $Ω$ is K-spectral or complete K-spectral for each continuous linear Hilbert space operator with numerical range included in $Ω$. Several approaches are discussed.

Schur multipliers and operator-valued Foguel-Hankel operators

We show that some matrices are Schur multipliers and this is applied to obtain classes of operator-valued Foguel-Hankel operators similar to contractions. This provides partial answers to a problem of K. Davidson and the second author concerning CAR-valued Foguel-Hankel operators.

Perturbations of operators similar to contractions and the commutator equation

Let $T$ and $V$ be two Hilbert space contractions and let $X$ be a linear bounded operator. It was proved by C. Foias and J.P. Williams that in certain cases the operator block matrix $R(X;T,V)$ (defined in the text) is similar to a contraction if and only if the commutator equation $X = TZ-ZV$ has a bounded solution $Z$. We characterize here the similarity to contractions of some operator matrices $R(X;T,V)$ in terms of growth conditions or of perturbations of $R(0;T,V)=T\oplus V$.

Constrained von Neumann inequalities

An equivalent formulation of the von Neumann inequality states that the backward shift $S^*$ on $\ell_{2}$ is extremal, in the sense that if $T$ is a Hilbert space contraction, then $\|p(T)\| \leq \|p(S^*)\|$ for each polynomial $p$. We discuss several results of the following type : if $T$ is a Hilbert space contraction satisfying some constraints, then $S^*$ restricted to a suitable invariant subspace is an extremal operator. Several operator radii are used instead of the operator norm. Applications to inequalities of coefficients of rational functions positive on the torus are given.

Generalized inverses and the maximal radius of regularity of a Fredholm operator

Operators possessing analytic generalized inverses satisfying the resolvent identity are studied. Several characterizations and necessary conditions are obtained. The maximal radius of regularity for a Fredholm operator T is computed in terms of the spectral radius of a generalized inverse of T. This provides a partial answer to a conjecture of J. Zemánek.
