Noise of a chargeless Fermi liquid

We construct a Fermi liquid theory to describe transport in a superconductor-quantum dot- normal metal junction close to the singlet-doublet (parity changing) transition of the dot. Though quasiparticles do not have a definite charge in this chargeless Fermi liquid, in case of particle-hole symmetry, a mapping to the Anderson model unveils a hidden U(1) symmetry and a corresponding pseudo-charge. In contrast to other correlated Fermi-liquids, the back scattering noise reveals an effective charge equal to the charge of Cooper pairs, $e^* = 2e$. In addition,we find a strong suppression of noise when the linear conductance is unitary, even for its non-linear part.

Wigner crystal phases in confined carbon nanotubes

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of the Wigner crystal states in confined semiconducting carbon nanotubes. We show by robust scaling arguments as well as by detailed semi-microscopic calculations that the effective exchange interaction has an SU(4) symmetry, and can reach values even as large as $J\sim 100 {\rm \,K}$ in weakly screened, small diameter nanotubes, close to the Wigner crystal - electron liquid crossover. Modeling the nanotube carefully and analyzing the magnetic structure of the inhomogeneous electron crystal, we recover the experimentally observed 'phase boundaries' of Deshpande and Bockrath [V. V. Deshpande and M. Bockrath, Nature Physics $\mathbf 4$, 314 (2008)]. Spin-orbit coupling only slightly modifies these phase boundaries, but breaks the spin symmetry down to SU(2)$\times$SU(2), and in Wigner molecules it gives rise to interesting excitation spectra, reflecting the underlying SU(4) as well as the residual SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetries.

Fingerprints of Majorana fermions in spin-resolved subgap spectroscopy

When a strongly correlated quantum dot is tunnel-coupled to a superconductor, it leads to the formation of Shiba bound states inside the superconducting gap. They have been measured experimentally in a superconductor-quantum dot-normal lead setup. Side coupling the quantum dot to a topological superconducting wire that supports Majorana bound states at its ends, drastically affects the structure of the Shiba states and induces supplementary in-gap states. The anomalous coupling between the Majorana bound states and the quantum dot gives rise to a characteristic imbalance in the spin resolved spectral functions for the dot operators. These are clear fingerprints for the existence of Majorana fermions and they can be detected experimentally in transport measurements. In terms of methods employed, we have used analytical approaches combined with the numerical renormalization group approach.

Transmission of a microwave cavity coupled to localized Shiba states

We consider a strongly correlated quantum dot, tunnel coupled to two superconducting leads and capacitively coupled to a single mode microwave cavity. When the superconducting gap is the largest energy scale, multiple Shiba states are formed inside the gap. The competition of these states for the ground state signals a quantum phase transition. We demonstrate that photonic measurements can be used to probe such localized Shiba states. Moreover, the quantum phase transition can be pinpointed exactly from the sudden change in the transmission signal. Calculations were performed using the numerical renormalization group approach.

Fermi-liquid theory for the single-impurity Anderson model

We generalize Nozières' Fermi-liquid theory for the low-energy behavior of the Kondo model to that of the single-impurity Anderson model. In addition to the electrons' phase shift at the Fermi energy, the low-energy Fermi-liquid theory is characterized by four Fermi-liquid parameters: the two given by Nozières that enter to first order in the excitation energy, and two additional ones that enter to second order and are needed away from particle-hole symmetry. We express all four parameters in terms of zero-temperature physical observables, namely the local charge and spin susceptibilities and their derivatives with respect to the local level position. We determine these in terms of the bare parameters of the Anderson model using Bethe Ansatz and Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) calculations. Our low-energy Fermi-liquid theory applies throughout the crossover from the strong-coupling Kondo regime via the mixed-valence regime to the empty-orbital regime. From the Fermi-liquid theory, we determine the conductance through a quantum dot symmetrically coupled to two leads in the regime of small magnetic field, low temperature and small bias voltage, and compute the coefficients of the $\sim B^2$, $\sim T^2$, and $\sim V^2$ terms \textit{exactly} in terms of the Fermi-liquid parameters. The coefficients of $T^2$, $V^2$ and $B^2$ are found to change sign during the Kondo to empty-orbital crossover. The crossover becomes universal in the limit that the local interaction is much larger than the level width. For completeness, we also compute the shot noise and discuss the resulting Fano factor.

Kondo effect in a carbon nanotube with spin-orbit interaction and valley mixing: A DM-NRG study

We investigate the effects of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and valley mixing on the transport and dynamical properties of a carbon nanotube (CNT) quantum dot in the Kondo regime. As these perturbations break the pseudo-spin symmetry in the CNT spectrum but preserve time-reversal symmetry, they induce a finite splitting $Δ$ between formerly degenerate Kramers pairs. Correspondingly, a crossover from the SU(4) to the SU(2)-Kondo effect occurs as the strength of these symmetry breaking parameters is varied. Clear signatures of the crossover are discussed both at the level of the spectral function as well as of the conductance. In particular, we demonstrate numerically and support with scaling arguments, that the Kondo temperature scales inversely with the splitting $Δ$ in the crossover regime. In presence of a finite magnetic field, time reversal symmetry is also broken. We investigate the effects of both parallel and perpendicular fields (with respect to the tube's axis), and discuss the conditions under which Kondo revivals may be achieved.

Transport in a hybrid normal-topological superconductor Kondo model

We investigate the equilibrium and non-equilibrium transport through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime, embedded between a normal metal and a topological superconductor supporting Majorana bound states at its end points. We find that the Kondo physics is significantly modified by the presence of the Majorana modes. When the Majorana modes are coupled, aside from the Kondo scale $T_K$, a new energy scale $T^*\ll T_K$ emerges, that controls the low energy physics of the system. At low temperatures, the ac-conductance is suppressed for frequencies below $T^*$, while the noise spectrum acquires a $\sim ω^3$ dependence. At high temperatures, $T \gg T_K$, the regular logarithmic dependence in the differential conductance is also affected. Under non-equilibrium conditions, and in particular in the $\{T, B\}\to 0$ limit, the differential conductance becomes negative. These findings indicate that the changes in transport may serve as clues for detecting the Majorana bound states in such systems. In terms of methods used, we characterize the transport by using a combination of perturbative and renormalization group approaches.

The Kondo Temperature of SU(4) Symmetric Quantum Dots

A path integral approach is used to derive a closed analytical expression for the Kondo temperature of the SU(4) symmetrical Anderson model. In contrast to the SU(2) case, the prefactor of the Kondo temperature is found to display a peculiar orbital energy (gate voltage) dependence, reflecting the presence of various SU(4) mixed valence fixed points. Our analytical expressions are tested against and confirmed by numerical renormalization group computations.

Finite-frequency-dependent noise of a quantum dot in a magnetic field

We present a detailed study for the finite-frequency current noise of a Kondo quantum dot in presence of a magnetic field by using a recently developed real time functional renormalization group approach [Phys. Rev. B $\mathbf{83}$, 201303(R) (2011)]. The scaling equations are modified in an external magnetic field; the couplings and non-local current vertices become strongly anisotropic, and develop new singularities. Consequently, in addition to the natural emission threshold frequency, $\hbarω= |eV|$, a corresponding singular behavior is found to emerge in the noise spectrum at frequencies $\hbar ω\approx |eV\pm B|$. The predicted singularities are measurable with present-day experimental techniques.

Finite-frequency thermoelectric response in strongly correlated quantum dots

We investigate the finite-frequency thermal transport through a quantum dot subject to strong interactions, by providing an exact, nonperturbative formalism that allows us to carry out a systematic analysis of the thermopower at any frequency. Special emphasis is put on the dc and high-frequency limits. We demonstrate that, in the Kondo regime, the ac thermopower is characterized by a universal function that we determine numerically.

Probing the Rashba effect via the induced magnetization around a Kondo impurity

When a single magnetic adatom is deposited on a surface of a metal, it affects the charge and spin texture of the electron gas surrounding it. The screening of the local moment by conduction electrons gives rise to the Kondo effect. Here we investigate the effect of the Rashba spin orbit coupling on the local magnetization density of states (LMDOS) around a Cobalt impurity on a Au(111) surface in a magnetic field. We show that the in-plane component of the LMDOS is exclusively associated with the Rashba spin orbit interaction. This observation can be experimentally exploited to confirm the presence of the Rashba effect on surfaces, such as Au(111), by performing spin-polarized STM measurements around the Kondo impurity.

SU(3) Anderson impurity model: A numerical renormalization group approach exploiting non-Abelian symmetries

We show how the density-matrix numerical renormalization group (DM-NRG) method can be used in combination with non-Abelian symmetries such as SU(N), where the decomposition of the direct product of two irreducible representations requires the use of a so-called outer multiplicity label. We apply this scheme to the SU(3) symmetrical Anderson model, for which we analyze the finite size spectrum, determine local fermionic, spin, superconducting, and trion spectral functions, and also compute the temperature dependence of the conductance. Our calculations reveal a rich Fermi liquid structure.

Quantum phase transition in a gapped Anderson model: A numerical renormalization group study

We use the numerical renormalization group method to investigate the spectral properties of a single-impurity Anderson model with a gap δ across the Fermi level in the conduction-electron spectrum. For any finite δ > 0, at half filling the ground state of the system is always a doublet. Away from half filling a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs as function of the gap value δ, and the system evolves from the strong-coupling (SC) Kondo-type state, corresponding to δ <δ_C toward a localized moment (LM) regime for δ > δ_C. The opening of the gap leads to the formation of one (two) bound states when the system is in the SC (LM) regime. The evolution across the QPT of their positions and the corresponding weights together with the dynamic properties of the model are investigated.

Spin-resolved spectra of Shiba multiplets from Mn impurities in MgB_2

We study the effect of magnetic Mn ions on the two-band superconductor MgB_2, and compute both the total and spin resolved scanning tunneling spectrum in the vicinity of the magnetic impurity. We show that when the internal structure of the Mn ion's d-shell is taken into account, multiple Shiba states appear in the spectrum. The presence of these multiplets could alter significantly the overall interpretation of local tunneling spectra for a wide range of superconducting hosts and magnetic impurities.

Longitudinal and spin-Hall conductance of a two-dimensional Rashba system with arbitrary disorder

We calculate the longitudinal and spin-Hall conductances in four-lead bridges with Rashba - Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. Numerical results are obtained both within Landauer-Buttiker formalism and by the direct evaluation of the Kubo formula. The microscopic Hamiltonian is obtained in the tight-binding approximation in terms of the neareast-neighbor hopping integral $t$, the Rashba spin-orbit coupling $V_R$, the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling $V_D$ and an Anderson-like, on-site disorder energy strength $W$. We reconfirm that below a critical disorder threshold, the spin-Hall effect is present. Further, we study the effect on the two conductivities of the Fermi energy, Rashba/Dresselhaus coefficient ratio, and system size.

Scaling theory of magneto-resistance in disordered local moment ferromagnets

We present a scaling theory of magneto-transport in Anderson-localized disordered ferromagnets. Within our framework a pronounced magnetic-field-sensitive resistance peak emerges naturally for temperatures near the magnetic phase transition. We find that the resistance anomaly is a direct consequence of the change in localization length caused by the magnetic transition. For increasing values of the external magnetic field, the resistance peak is gradually depleted and pushed towards higher temperatures. Our results are in good agreement with magneto-resistance measurements on a variety of disordered magnets.

Shiba multiplets due to Mn impurities in MgB_2

We study the effect of magnetic Mn ions on the two-band superconductor MgB_2, and compute both the total and spin resolved scanning tunneling spectrum in the vicinity of the magnetic impurity. We show that when the internal structure of the Mn ion's $d$-shell is taken into account, multiple Shiba states appear in the spectrum. These multiplets were missed by previous calculations based on simplistic models, and their presence could alter significantly the overall interpretation of local tunneling spectra for a wide range of superconducting hosts and magnetic impurities

Non-Fermi Behavior of the Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

(1) The temperature dependence of the specific heat for a marginal Fermi liquid has been calculated. (2) We calculated the self-energy at T=0 for a two dimensional fermionic system with hyperbolic dispersion. The existence of the saddle points in the energy gives rise to a marginal behavior. (3) We showed that the two-dimensional fermionic system with the energy $ε_{\mathbf{k}}=k_xk_y$ has a non-Fermi behavior. (4) The electronic self-energy due to the electron-spin interaction is calculated for a two dimensional system. (5) We study the influence of the amplitude fluctuations of a non-Fermi superconductor on the energy spectrum of the two-dimensional Anderson non-Fermi system. (6) Using the field-theoretical methods we studied the evolution from BCS theory to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) for a non-Fermi system. (7) Using the renormalization group approach proposed by Millis we calculated the specific heat coefficient $γ(T)$ for the magnetic fluctuations with susceptibility $χ^{-1}\sim δ^α+| ω| ^α+f(q)$ near a Lifshitz point.
