Schrödinger operators with non-integer power-law potentials and Lie-Rinehart algebras

We study Schrödinger operators $H:= -Δ+ V$ with potentials $V$ that have power-law growth (not necessarily polynomial) at 0 and at $\infty$ using methods of Lie theory (Lie-Rinehart algebras) and microlocal analysis. More precisely, we show that $H$ is ''generated'' in a certain sense by an explicit Lie-Rinehart algebra. This allows then to construct a suitable (microlocal) calculus of pseudodifferential operators that provides further properties of $H$. Classically, this microlocal analysis method was used to study $H$ when the power-laws describing the potential $V$ have integer exponents. Thus, the main point of this paper is that this integrality condition on the exponents is not really necessary for the microlocal analysis method to work. While we consider potentials following (possibly non-integer) power-laws both at the origin and at infinity, our results extend right away to potentials having power-law singularities at several points. The extension of the classical microlocal analysis results to potentials with non-integer power-laws is achieved by considering the setting of Lie-Rinehart algebras and of the continuous family groupoids integrating them. (The classical case relies instead on Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids.)

Analysis on noncompact manifolds and Index Theory: Fredholm conditions and Pseudodifferential operators

We provide Fredholm conditions for compatible differential operators on certain Lie manifolds (that is, on certain possibly non-compact manifolds with nice ends). We discuss in more detail the case of manifolds with cylindrical, hyperbolic, and Euclidean ends, which are all covered by particular instances of our results. We also discuss applications to Schrödinger operators with singularities of the form r^{-2γ}$, $γ\in \RR_+$.

The complexity of quantified constraints: collapsibility, switchability and the algebraic formulation

Let A be an idempotent algebra on a finite domain. By mediating between results of Chen and Zhuk, we argue that if A satisfies the polynomially generated powers property (PGP) and B is a constraint language invariant under A (that is, in Inv(A)), then QCSP(B) is in NP. In doing this we study the special forms of PGP, switchability and collapsibility, in detail, both algebraically and logically, addressing various questions such as decidability on the way. We then prove a complexity-theoretic converse in the case of infinite constraint languages encoded in propositional logic, that if Inv(A) satisfies the exponentially generated powers property (EGP), then QCSP(Inv(A)) is co-NP-hard. Since Zhuk proved that only PGP and EGP are possible, we derive a full dichotomy for the QCSP, justifying what we term the Revised Chen Conjecture. This result becomes more significant now the original Chen Conjecture is known to be false. Switchability was introduced by Chen as a generalisation of the already-known collapsibility. For three-element domain algebras A that are switchable and omit a G-set, we prove that, for every finite subset D of Inv(A), Pol(D) is collapsible. The significance of this is that, for QCSP on finite structures (over a three-element domain), all QCSP tractability (in P) explained by switchability is already explained by collapsibility.

The lattice and semigroup structure of multipermutations

We study the algebraic properties of binary relations whose underlying digraph is smooth, that is has no source or sink. Such objects have been studied as surjective hyper-operations (shops) on the corresponding vertex set, and as binary relations that are defined everywhere and whose inverse is also defined everywhere. In the latter formulation, they have been called multipermutations. We study the lattice structure of sets (monoids) of multipermutations over an n-element domain. Through a Galois connection, these monoids form the algebraic counterparts to sets of relations closed under definability in positive first-order logic without equality. The first side of this Galois connection has been elaborated previously, we show the other side here. We study the property of inverse on multipermutations and how it connects our monoids to groups. We use our results to give a simple dichotomy theorem for the evaluation problem of positive first-order logic without equality on the class of structures whose preserving multipermutations form a monoid closed under inverse. These problems turn out either to be in Logspace or to be Pspace-complete. We go on to study the monoid of all multipermutations on an n-element domain, under usual composition of relations. We characterise its Green relations, regular elements and show that it does not admit a generating set that is polynomial on n.

Gluing action groupoids: Fredholm conditions and layer potentials

This paper is a merge of arXiv:1807.05418 and arXiv:1808.01442. We introduce a new class of groupoids, called "boundary action groupoids", which are obtained by gluing reductions of action groupoids. We show that such groupoids model the analysis on many singular spaces, and we give several examples. Under some conditions on the action of the groupoid, we obtain Fredholm criteria for the pseudodifferential operators generated by boundary action groupoids. Moreover, we show that layer potential groupoids for conical domains constructed in an earlier paper (Carvalho-Qiao, Central European J. Math., 2013) are both Fredholm groupoids and boundary action groupoids, which enables us to deal with many analysis problems on singular spaces in a unified way. As an application, we obtain Fredholm criteria for operators on layer potential groupoids.

The complexity of quantified constraints using the algebraic formulation

Let A be an idempotent algebra on a finite domain. We combine results of Chen, Zhuk and Carvalho et al. to argue that if A satisfies the polynomially generated powers property (PGP), then QCSP(Inv(A)) is in NP. We then use the result of Zhuk to prove a converse, that if QCSP(Inv(A)) satisfies the exponentially generated powers property (EGP), then QCSP(Inv(A)) is co-NP-hard. Since Zhuk proved that only PGP and EGP are possible, we derive a full dichotomy for the QCSP, justifying the moral correctness of what we term the Chen Conjecture. We examine in closer detail the situation for domains of size three. Over any finite domain, the only type of PGP that can occur is switchability. Switchability was introduced by Chen as a generalisation of the already-known Collapsibility. For three-element domain algebras A that are Switchable, we prove that for every finite subset Delta of Inv(A), Pol(Delta) is Collapsible. The significance of this is that, for QCSP on finite structures (over three-element domain), all QCSP tractability explained by Switchability is already explained by Collapsibility. Finally, we present a three-element domain complexity classification vignette, using known as well as derived results.

Fredholm conditions on non-compact manifolds: theory and examples

We give explicit Fredholm conditions for classes of pseudodifferential operators on suitable singular and non-compact spaces. In particular, we include a "user's guide" to Fredholm conditions on particular classes of manifolds including asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, asymptotically Euclidean (or conic) manifolds, and manifolds with poly-cylindrical ends. The reader interested in applications should be able read right away the results related to those examples, beginning with Section 5. Our general, theoretical results are that an operator adapted to the geometry is Fredholm if, and only if, it is elliptic and all its limit operators, in a sense to be made precise, are invertible. Central to our theoretical results is the concept of a Fredholm groupoid, which is the class of groupoids for which this characterization of the Fredholm condition is valid. We use the notions of exhaustive and strictly spectral families of representations to obtain a general characterization of Fredholm groupoids. In particular, we introduce the class of the so-called groupoids with Exel's property as the groupoids for which the regular representations are exhaustive. We show that the class of "stratified submersion groupoids" has Exel's property, where stratified submersion groupoids are defined by glueing fibered pull-backs of bundles of Lie groups. We prove that a stratified submersion groupoid is Fredholm whenever its isotropy groups are amenable. Many groupoids, and hence many pseudodifferential operators appearing in practice, fit into this framework. This fact is explored to yield Fredholm conditions not only in the above mentioned classes, but also on manifolds that are obtained by desingularization or by blow-up of singular sets.

On Algebras with many symmetric operations

We show that, for each finite algebra A, either it has symmetric term operations of all arities or else some finite algebra in the variety generated by A has two automorphisms without a common fixed point. We also show this two-automorphism condition cannot be replaced by a single fixed-point- free automorphism.

Regularity for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators

We prove a regularity result in weighted Sobolev spaces (or Babuska--Kondratiev spaces) for the eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator. More precisely, let K_{a}^{m}(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) be the weighted Sobolev space obtained by blowing up the set of singular points of the Coulomb type potential V(x) = \sum_{1 \le j \le N} \frac{b_j}{|x_j|} + \sum_{1 \le i < j \le N} \frac{c_{ij}}{|x_i-x_j|}, x in \mathbb{R}^{3N}, b_j, c_{ij} in \mathbb{R}. If u in L^2(\mathbb{R}^{3N}) satisfies (-Δ+ V) u = λu in distribution sense, then u belongs to K_{a}^{m} for all m \in \mathbb{Z}_+ and all a \le 0. Our result extends to the case when b_j and c_{ij} are suitable bounded functions on the blown-up space. In the single-electron, multi-nuclei case, we obtain the same result for all a<3/2.

From complexity to algebra and back: digraph classes, collapsibility and the PGP

Inspired by computational complexity results for the quantified constraint satisfaction problem, we study the clones of idempotent polymorphisms of certain digraph classes. Our first results are two algebraic dichotomy, even "gap", theorems. Building on and extending [Martin CP'11], we prove that partially reflexive paths bequeath a set of idempotent polymorphisms whose associated clone algebra has: either the polynomially generated powers property (PGP); or the exponentially generated powers property (EGP). Similarly, we build on [DaMM ICALP'14] to prove that semicomplete digraphs have the same property. These gap theorems are further motivated by new evidence that PGP could be the algebraic explanation that a QCSP is in NP even for unbounded alternation. Along the way we also effect a study of a concrete form of PGP known as collapsibility, tying together the algebraic and structural threads from [Chen Sicomp'08], and show that collapsibility is equivalent to its $Π_2$-restriction. We also give a decision procedure for $k$-collapsibility from a singleton source of a finite structure (a form of collapsibility which covers all known examples of PGP for finite structures). Finally, we present a new QCSP trichotomy result, for partially reflexive paths with constants. Without constants it is known these QCSPs are either in NL or Pspace-complete [Martin CP'11], but we prove that with constants they attain the three complexities NL, NP-complete and Pspace-complete.

An index formula for perturbed Dirac operators on Lie manifolds

We give an index formula for a class of Dirac operators coupled with unbounded potentials. More precisely, we study operators of the form P := D+ V, where D is a Dirac operators and V is an unbounded potential at infinity on a possibly non-compact manifold M_0. We assume that M_0 is a Lie manifold with compactification denoted M. Examples of Lie manifolds are provided by asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic spaces. The potential V is required to be invertible outside a compact set K and V^{-1} extends to a smooth function on M\K that vanishes on all faces of M in a controlled way. Using tools from analysis on non-compact Riemannian manifolds, we show that the computation of the index of P reduces to the computation of the index of an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of order zero on M_0 that is a multiplication operator at infinity. The index formula for P can then be obtained from earlier results. The proof also yields similar index formulas for Callias-type pseudodifferential operators coupled with bounded potentials that are invertible at infinity on asymptotically commutative Lie manifolds, a class of manifolds that includes the scattering and double-edge calculi.

Layer potentials C*-algebras of domains with conical points

To a domain with conical points Ω, we associate a natural C*-algebra that is motivated by the study of boundary value problems on Ω, especially using the method of layer potentials. In two dimensions, we allow Ωto be a domain with ramified cracks. We construct an explicit groupoid associated to the boundary of Ωand use the theory of pseudodifferential operators on groupoids and its representations to obtain our layer potentials C*-algebra. We study its structure, compute the associated K-groups, and prove Fredholm conditions for the natural pseudodifferential operators affiliated to this C*-algebra.

Cobordism invariance of the family index

We give a K-theory proof of the invariance under cobordism of the family index. We consider elliptic pseudodifferential families on a continuous fibre bundle with smooth fibres over a compact base space B, and define a notion of cobordant families using K^1-groups on fibrations with boundary. We show that the index of two such families is the same using properties of the push-forward map in K-theory to reduce it to families on B x R^n.

CD(4) has bounded width

We prove that the constraint languages invariant under a short sequence of Jónsson terms (containing at most three non-trivial ternary terms) are tractable by showing that they have bounded width. This improves the previous result by Kiss and Valeriote and presents some evidence that the Larose-Zadori conjecture holds in the congruence-distributive case.

A K-Theory Proof of the Cobordism Invariance of the Index

We give a proof of the cobordism invariance of the index of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on sigma-compact manifolds, where, in the non-compact case, the operators are assumed to be multiplication outside a compact set. We show that, if the principal symbol class of such an elliptic operator on the boundary of a manifold X has a suitable extension to K^1(TX), then its index is zero. This condition is incorporated into the definition of a cobordism group for non-compact manifolds, called here ``cobordism of symbols''. Our proof is topological, in that we use properties of the push-forward map in K-theory defined by Atiyah and Singer, to reduce it to R^n. In particular, we generalize the invariance of the index with respect to the push-forward map to the non-compact case, and obtain an extension of the K-theoretical index formula of Atiyah and Singer to operators that are multiplication outside a compact set. Our results hold also for G-equivariant operators, where G is a compact Lie group.
