An algebraic criterion for the vanishing of bounded cohomology

We prove the vanishing of bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients for many groups of interest in geometry, dynamics, and algebra. These include compactly supported structure-preserving diffeomorphism groups of certain manifolds; the group of interval exchange transformations of the half line; piecewise linear and piecewise projective groups of the line, giving strong answers to questions of Calegari and Navas; direct limit linear groups of relevance in algebraic $K$-theory, thereby answering a question by Kastenholz and Sroka and a question of two of the authors and L{ö}h; and certain subgroups of big mapping class groups, such as the stable braid group and the stable mapping class group, proving a conjecture of Bowden. Moreover, we prove that in the recently introduced framework of enumerated groups, the generic group has vanishing bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients. At the heart of our approach is an elementary algebraic criterion called the commuting cyclic conjugates condition that is readily verifiable for the aforementioned large classes of groups.

Displacement techniques in bounded cohomology

Several algebraic criteria, reflecting displacement properties of transformation groups, have been used in the past years to prove vanishing of bounded cohomology and stable commutator length. Recently, the authors introduced the property of commuting cyclic conjugates, a new displacement technique that is widely applicable and provides vanishing of the bounded cohomology in all positive degrees and all dual separable coefficients. In this note we consider the most recent along with the by now classical displacement techniques and we study implications among them as well as counterexamples.

An $\ell_1$-norm-mass inequality for complete manifolds

We generalize an inequality of Besson-Courtois-Gallot about volume and simplicial volume of closed manifolds to the $\ell_1$-norm of all the homology classes of complete manifolds. The inequality involves the critical exponent of the fundamental group of the manifold and the mass of the homology classes.

Surface bundles over surfaces: new inequalities between signature, simplicial volume and Euler characteristic

We present three new inequalities tying the signature, the simplicial volume and the Euler characteristic of surface bundles over surfaces. Two of them are true for any surface bundle, while the third holds on a specific family of surface bundles, namely the ones that arise through a ramified covering. These are the main known examples of bundles with non-zero signature.

Signature Cocycles on the Mapping Class Group and Symplectic Groups

Werner Meyer constructed a cocycle in $H^2(Sp(2g, \mathbb{Z}); \mathbb{Z})$ which computes the signature of a closed oriented surface bundle over a surface, with fibre a surface of genus g. By studying properties of this cocycle, he also showed that the signature of such a surface bundle is a multiple of 4. In this paper, we study the signature cocycles both from the geometric and algebraic points of view. We present geometric constructions which are relevant to the signature cocycle and provide an alternative to Meyer's decomposition of a surface bundle. Furthermore, we discuss the precise relation between the Meyer and Wall-Maslov index. The main theorem of the paper, Theorem 6.6, provides the necessary group cohomology results to analyze the signature of a surface bundle modulo any integer N. Using these results, we are able to give a complete answer for N = 2, 4 and 8, and based on a theorem of Deligne, we show that this is the best we can hope for using this method.

Cohomology of symplectic groups and Meyer's signature theorem

Meyer showed that the signature of a closed oriented surface bundle over a surface is a multiple of $4$, and can be computed using an element of $H^2(\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z}),\mathbb{Z})$. Denoting by $1 \to \mathbb{Z} \to \widetilde{\mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})} \to \mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z}) \to 1$ the pullback of the universal cover of $\mathsf{ Sp}(2g,\mathbb{R})$, Deligne proved that every finite index subgroup of $\widetilde{\mathsf {Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})}$ contains $2\mathbb{Z}$. As a consequence, a class in the second cohomology of any finite quotient of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})$ can at most enable us to compute the signature of a surface bundle modulo $8$. We show that this is in fact possible and investigate the smallest quotient of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})$ that contains this information. This quotient $\mathfrak{H}$ is a non-split extension of $\mathsf {Sp}(2g,2)$ by an elementary abelian group of order $2^{2g+1}$. There is a central extension $1\to \mathbb{Z}/2\to\tilde{\mathfrak{H}}\to\mathfrak{H}\to 1$, and $\tilde{\mathfrak{H}}$ appears as a quotient of the metaplectic double cover $\mathsf{Mp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})=\widetilde{\mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})}/2\mathbb{Z}$. It is an extension of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g,2)$ by an almost extraspecial group of order $2^{2g+2}$, and has a faithful irreducible complex representation of dimension $2^g$. Provided $g\ge 4$, $\widetilde{\mathfrak{H}}$ is the universal central extension of $\mathfrak{H}$. Putting all this together, we provide a recipe for computing the signature modulo $8$, and indicate some consequences.

A geometric description of the homology of surface bundles

In the present note we describe geometrically the homology classes in the total space of a surface bundle over a surface in terms of the holonomy map. We treat the cases where the base surface is closed or has one boundary component. We replace the wrong theorem of the previous version by some observations on the homology of surface bundles and explain why our previous strategy failed.
