CMB-S4: Iterative Internal Delensing and $r$ Constraints

The tightest constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can only be obtained after removing a substantial fraction of the lensing $B$-mode sample variance. The planned CMB-S4 experiment will remove the lensing $B$-mode signal internally by reconstructing the gravitational lenses from high-resolution observations. We document here a first lensing reconstruction pipeline able to achieve this optimally for arbitrary sky coverage. We make it part of a map-based framework to test CMB-S4 delensing performance and its constraining power on $r$, including inhomogeneous noise and two non-Gaussian Galactic polarized foreground models. The framework performs component-separation of the high-resolution maps, followed by the construction of lensing $B$-mode templates, which are then included in a parametric small-aperture maps cross-spectra-based likelihood for $r$. We find that the lensing reconstruction and framework achieve the expected performance, compatible with the target $σ(r) \simeq 5\cdot 10^{-4}$ in the absence of a tensor signal, after an effective removal of $92\%$ to $93\%$ of the lensing $B$-mode variance, depending on the simulation set. The code for the lensing reconstruction can also be used for cross-correlation studies with large-scale structures, lensing spectrum reconstruction, cluster lensing, or other CMB lensing-related purposes. As part of our tests we also demonstrate joint optimal reconstruction of the lensing potential with the lensing curl potential mode, second-order in the density fluctuations.

Plastic Laminate Antireflective Coatings for Millimeter-wave Optics in BICEP Array

The BICEP/Keck series of experiments target the Cosmic Microwave Background at degree-scale resolution from the South Pole. Over the next few years, the "Stage-3" BICEP Array (BA) telescope will improve the program's frequency coverage and sensitivity to primordial B-mode polarization by an order of magnitude. The first receiver in the array, BA1, began observing at 30/40 GHz in early 2020. The next two receivers, BA2 and BA3, are currently being assembled and will map the southern sky at frequencies ranging from 95 GHz to 150 GHz. Common to all BA receivers is a refractive, on-axis, cryogenic optical design that focuses microwave radiation onto a focal plane populated with antenna-coupled bolometers. High-performance antireflective coatings up to 760 mm in aperture are needed for each element in the optical chain, and must withstand repeated thermal cycles down to 4 K. Here we present the design and fabrication of the 30/40 GHz anti-reflection coatings for the recently deployed BA1 receiver, then discuss laboratory measurements of their reflectance. We review the lamination method for these single- and dual-layer plastic coatings with indices matched to various polyethylene, nylon and alumina optics. We also describe ongoing efforts to optimize coatings for the next BA cryostats, which may inform technological choices for future Small-Aperture Telescopes of the CMB "Stage 4" experiment.

Scalar-tensor theories of gravity, neutrino physics, and the $H_0$ tension

We use $Planck$ 2018 data to constrain the simplest models of scalar-tensor theories characterized by a coupling to the Ricci scalar of the type $F(σ) R$ with $F(σ) = N_{pl}^2 + ξσ^2$. We update our results with previous $Planck$ and BAO data releases obtaining the tightest constraints to date on the coupling parameters, that is $ξ< 5.5 \times 10^{-4}$ for $N_{pl}=0$ (induced gravity or equivalently extended Jordan-Brans-Dicke) and $(N_{pl} \sqrt{8 πG})-1 < 1.8 \times 10^{-5}$ for $ξ= -1/6$ (conformal coupling), both at 95% CL. Because of a modified expansion history after radiation-matter equality compared to the $Λ$CDM model, all these dynamical models accommodate a higher value for $H_0$ and therefore alleviate the tension between $Planck$/BAO and distance-ladder measurement from SNe Ia data from $4.4σ$ at best to $2.3σ$. We show that all these results are robust to changes in the neutrino physics. In comparison to the $Λ$CDM model, partial degeneracies between neutrino physics and the coupling to the Ricci scalar allow for smaller values $N_{\rm eff} \sim 2.8$, $1σ$ lower compared to the standard $N_{\rm eff} = 3.046$, and relax the upper limit on the neutrino mass up to 40%.

Testing extended Jordan-Brans-Dicke theories with future cosmological observations

The extended Jordan-Brans-Dicke (eJBD) theory of gravity is constrained by a host of astrophysical and cosmological observations spanning a wide range of scales. The current cosmological constraints on the first post-Newtonian parameter in these simplest eJBD models in which the recent acceleration of the Universe is connected with the variation of the effective gravitational strength are consistent, but approximately two order of magnitude larger than the time-delay test within the Solar System. We forecast the capabilities of future galaxy surveys in combination with current and future CMB anisotropies measurements to further constrain the simplest dark energy models within eJBD theory of gravity. By considering two cases of a monomial potential (a quartic potential or a cosmological constant), we show how Euclid-like galaxy clustering and weak lensing data in combination with BOSS and future CMB observations have the potential to reach constraints on the first post-Newtonian parameter $γ_{\rm PN}$ comparable to those from the Solar System.

Cosmological constraints on induced gravity dark energy models

We study induced gravity dark energy models coupled with a simple monomial potential $\propto σ^n$ and a positive exponent $n$. These simple potentials lead to viable dark energy models with a weak dependence on the exponent, which characterizes the accelerated expansion of the cosmological model in the asymptotic attractor, when ordinary matter becomes negligible. We use recent cosmological data to constrain the coupling $γ$ to the Ricci curvature, under the assumptions that the scalar field starts at rest deep in the radiation era and that the gravitational constant in the Einstein equations is compatible with the one measured in a Cavendish-like experiment. By using $Planck$ 2015 data only, we obtain the 95 % CL bound $γ< 0.0017$ for $n=4$, which is further tightened to $γ< 0.00075$ by adding Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data. This latter bound improves by $\sim 30$ % the limit obtained with the $Planck$ 2013 data and the same compilation of BAO data. We discuss the dependence of the $γ$ and $\dot G_N/G_N (z=0)$ on $n$.

CMB and BAO constraints for an induced gravity dark energy model with a quartic potential

We study the predictions for structure formation in an induced gravity dark energy model with a quartic potential. By developing a dedicated Einstein-Boltzmann code, we study self-consistently the dynamics of homogeneous cosmology and of linear perturbations without using any parametrization. By evolving linear perturbations with initial conditions in the radiation era, we accurately recover the quasi-static analytic approximation in the matter dominated era. We use Planck 2013 data and a compilation of baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) data to constrain the coupling $γ$ to the Ricci curvature and the other cosmological parameters. By connecting the gravitational constant in the Einstein equation to the one measured in a Cavendish-like experiment, we find $γ< 0.0012$ at 95% CL with Planck 2013 and BAO data. This is the tightest cosmological constraint on $γ$ and on the corresponding derived post-Newtonian parameters. Because of a degeneracy between $γ$ and the Hubble constant $H_0$, we show how larger values for $γ$ are allowed, but not preferred at a significant statistical level, when local measurements of $H_0$ are combined in the analysis with Planck 2013 data.
