Metric projections, zeros of optimal polynomial approximants, and some extremal problems in Hardy spaces

The well-known proof of Beurling's Theorem in the Hardy space $H^2$, which describes all shift-invariant subspaces, rests on calculating the orthogonal projection of the unit constant function onto the subspace in question. Extensions to other Hardy spaces $H^p$ for $0 < p < \infty$ are usually obtained by reduction to the $H^2$ case via inner-outer factorization of $H^p$ functions. In this paper, we instead explicitly calculate the metric projection of the unit constant function onto a shift-invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^p$ when $1<p<\infty$. This problem is equivalent to finding the best approximation in $H^p$ of the conjugate of an inner function. In $H^2$, this approximation is always a constant, but in $H^p$, when $p\neq 2$, this approximation turns out to be zero or a non-constant outer function. Further, we determine the exact distance between the unit constant and any shift-invariant subspace and propose some open problems. Our results use the notion of Birkhoff-James orthogonality and Pythagorean Inequalities, along with an associated dual extremal problem, which leads to some interesting inequalities. Further consequences shed light on the lattice of shift-invariant subspaces of $H^p$, as well as the behavior of the zeros of optimal polynomial approximants in $H^p$.

A counterexample to the weak Shanks conjecture

We give an example of a function $f$ non-vanishing in the closed bidisk and the affine polynomial minimizing the norm of $1-pf$ in the Hardy space of the bidisk among all affine polynomials $p$. We show that this polynomial vanishes inside the bidisk. This provides a counterexample to the weakest form of a conjecture due to Shanks that has been open since 1980, with applications that arose from digital filter design. This counterexample has a simple form and follows naturally from [7], where the phenomenon of zeros seeping into the unit disk was already observed for similar minimization problems in one variable.

A survey of optimal polynomial approximants, applications to digital filter design, and related open problems

In the last few years, the notion of optimal polynomial approximant has appeared in the mathematics literature in connection with Hilbert spaces of analytic functions of one or more variables. In the 70s, researchers in engineering and applied mathematics introduced least-squares inverses in the context of digital filters in signal processing. It turns out that in the Hardy space $H^2$ these objects are identical. This paper is a survey of known results about optimal polynomial approximants. In particular, we will examine their connections with orthogonal polynomials and reproducing kernels in weighted spaces and digital filter design. We will also describe what is known about the zeros of optimal polynomial approximants, their rates of decay, and convergence results. Throughout the paper, we state many open questions that may be of interest.

Boundary behavior of optimal polynomial approximants

In this paper, we provide an efficient method for computing the Taylor coefficients of $1-p_n f$, where $p_n$ denotes the optimal polynomial approximant of degree $n$ to $1/f$ in a Hilbert space $H^2_ω$ of analytic functions over the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$, and $f$ is a polynomial of degree $d$ with $d$ simple zeros. As a consequence, we show that in many of the spaces $H^2_ω$, the sequence $\{1-p_nf\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ is uniformly bounded on the closed unit disc and, if $f$ has no zeros inside $\mathbb{D}$, the sequence $\{1-p_nf \}$ converges uniformly to 0 on compact subsets of the complement of the zeros of $f$ in $\bar{\mathbb{D}}, $ and we obtain precise estimates on the rate of convergence on compacta. We also treat the previously unknown case of a single zero with higher multiplicity.

Simultaneous zero-free approximation and universal optimal polynomial approximants

Let $E$ be a closed subset of the unit circle of measure zero. Recently, Beise and Müller showed the existence of a function in the Hardy space $H^2$ for which the partial sums of its Taylor series approximate any continuous function on $E$. In this paper, we establish an analogue of this result in a non-linear setting where we consider optimal polynomial approximants of reciprocals of functions in $H^2$ instead of Taylor polynomials. The proof uses a new result on simultaneous zero-free approximation of independent interest. Our results extend to Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathcal{D}_α$ for $α\in [0,1]$.

On the concept of inner function in Hardy and Bergman spaces in multiply connected domains

We discuss the notion of an inner function for spaces of analytic functions in multiply connected domains in $\mathbb{C}$, giving a historical overview and comparing several possible definitions. We explore connections between inner functions, zero-divisors for Hardy spaces and Bergman spaces, and weighted reproducing kernels. After recording some obstructions and negative results, we suggest avenues for further research and point out several open problems.

Remarks on Inner Functions and Optimal Approximants

We discuss the concept of inner function in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces with an orthogonal basis of monomials and examine connections between inner functions and optimal polynomial approximants to $1/f$, where $f$ is a function in the space. We revisit some classical examples from this perspective, and show how a construction of Shapiro and Shields can be modified to produce inner functions.

Zeros of optimal polynomial approximants: Jacobi matrices and Jentzsch-type theorems

We study the structure of the zeros of optimal polynomial approximants to reciprocals of functions in Hilbert spaces of analytic functions in the unit disk. In many instances, we find the minimum possible modulus of occurring zeros via a nonlinear extremal problem associated with norms of Jacobi matrices. We examine global properties of these zeros and prove Jentzsch-type theorems describing where they accumulate. As a consequence, we obtain detailed information regarding zeros of reproducing kernels in weighted spaces of analytic functions.

Orthogonal polynomials, reproducing kernels, and zeros of optimal approximants

We study connections between orthogonal polynomials, reproducing kernel functions, and polynomials $p$ minimizing Dirichlet-type norms $\|pf-1\|_α$ for a given function $f$. For $α\in [0,1]$ (which includes the Hardy and Dirichlet spaces of the disk) and general $f$, we show that such extremal polynomials are non-vanishing in the closed unit disk. For negative $α$, the weighted Bergman space case, the extremal polynomials are non-vanishing on a disk of strictly smaller radius, and zeros can move inside the unit disk. We also explain how $\mathrm{dist}_{D_α}(1,f\cdot \mathcal{P}_n)$, where $\mathcal{P}_n$ is the space of polynomials of degree at most $n$, can be expressed in terms of quantities associated with orthogonal polynomials and kernels, and we discuss methods for computing the quantities in question.

Cyclic polynomials in two variables

We give a complete characterization of polynomials in two complex variables that are cyclic with respect to the coordinate shifts acting on Dirichlet-type spaces in the bidisk, which include the Hardy space and the Dirichlet space of the bidisk. The cyclicity of a polynomial depends on both the size and nature of the zero set of the polynomial on the distinguished boundary. The techniques in the proof come from real analytic function theory, determinantal representations for stable polynomials, and harmonic analysis on curves

Cyclicity in Dirichlet-type spaces and extremal polynomials II: functions on the bidisk

We study Dirichlet-type spaces $\mathfrak{D}_α$ of analytic functions in the unit bidisk and their cyclic elements. These are the functions $f$ for which there exists a sequence $(p_n)_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of polynomials in two variables such that $\|p_nf-1\|_α\to 0$ as $n\to \infty$. We obtain a number of conditions that imply cyclicity, and obtain sharp estimates on the best possible rate of decay of the norms $\|p_nf-1\|_α$, in terms of the degree of $p_n$, for certain classes of functions using results concerning Hilbert spaces of functions of one complex variable and comparisons between norms in one and two variables. We give examples of polynomials with no zeros on the bidisk that are not cyclic in $\mathfrak{D}_α$ for $α>1/2$ (including the Dirichlet space); this is in contrast with the one-variable case where all non-vanishing polynomials are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces that are not algebras ($α\le 1$). Further, we point out the necessity of a capacity zero condition on zero sets (in an appropriate sense) for cyclicity in the setting of the bidisk, and conclude by stating some open problems.

Cyclicity in Dirichlet-type spaces and extremal polynomials

For functions $f$ in Dirichlet-type spaces we study how to determine constructively optimal polynomials $p_n$ that minimize $\|p f-1\|_α$ among all polynomials $p$ of degree at most $n$. Then we give upper and lower bounds for the rate of decay of $\|p_{n}f-1\|_α$ as $n$ approaches $\infty$. Further, we study a generalization of a weak version of the Brown-Shields conjecture and some computational phenomena about the zeros of optimal polynomials.
