On the variety of solutions of 1-dimensional nonlinear eigenvalue problems

Second order nonlinear eigenvalue problems are considered for which the spectrum is an interval. The boundary conditions are of Robin and Dirichlet type. The shape and the number of solutions are discussed by means of a phase plane analysis. A new type of asymmetric solutions are discovered. Some numerical illustrations are given.

Positive solutions of semilinear elliptic problems with a Hardy potential

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ be a bounded domain and $δ(x)$ be the distance of a point $x\in Ω$ to the boundary. We study the positive solutions of the problem $Δu +\fracμ{δ(x)^2}u=u^p$ in $Ω$, where $p>0, \,p\ne 1$ and $μ\in \mathbb{R},\,μ\ne 0$ is smaller then the Hardy constant. The interplay between the singular potential and the nonlinearity leads to interesting structures of the solution sets. In this paper we first give the complete picture of the radial solutions in balls. In particular we establish for $p>1$ the existence of a unique large solution behaving like $δ^{- \frac2{p-1}}$ at the boundary. In general domains we extend results of arXiv:arch-ive/1407.0288 and show that there exists a unique singular solutions $u$ such that $u/δ^{β_-}\to c$ on the boundary for an arbitrary positive function $c \in C^{2+γ}(\partialΩ) \, (γ\in (0,1)), c \ge 0$. Here $β_-$ is the smaller root of $β(β-1)+μ=0$.

Reaction-diffusion problems on time-dependent Riemannian manifolds: stability of periodic solutions

We investigate the stability of time-periodic solutions of semilinear parabolic problems with Neumann boundary conditions. Such problems are posed on compact submanifolds evolving periodically in time. The discussion is based on the principal eigenvalue of periodic parabolic operators. The study is motivated by biological models on the effect of growth and curvature on patterns formation. The Ricci curvature plays an important role.

Boundary singularities of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in the half-space with a Hardy potential

We study a nonlinear equation in the half-space $\{x_1>0\}$ with a Hardy potential, specifically \[-Δu -\fracμ{x_1^2}u+u^p=0\quad\text{in}\quad \mathbb R^n_+,\] where $p>1$ and $-\infty<μ<1/4$. The admissible boundary behavior of the positive solutions is either $O(x_1^{-2/(p-1)})$ as $x_1\to 0$, or is determined by the solutions of the linear problem $-Δh -\fracμ{x_1^2}h=0$. In the first part we study in full detail the separable solutions of the linear equations for the whole range of $μ$. In the second part, by means of sub and supersolutions we construct separable solutions of the nonlinear problem which behave like $O(x_1^{-2/(p-1)})$ near the origin and which, away from the origin have exactly the same asymptotic behavior as the separable solutions of the linear problem. In the last part we construct solutions that behave like $O(x_1^{-2/(p-1)})$ at some prescribed parts of the boundary, while at the rest of the boundary the solutions decay or blowup at a slower rate determined by the linear part of the equation.

Shape optimization for an elliptic operator with infinitely many positive and negative eigenvalues

The paper deals with an eigenvalue problems possessing infinitely many positive and negative eigenvalues. Inequalities for the smallest positive and the largest negative eigenvalues, which have the same properties as the fundamental frequency, are derived. The main question is whether or not the classical isoperimetric inequalities for the fundamental frequency of membranes hold in this case. The arguments are based on the harmonic transplantation for the global results and the shape derivatives (domain variations) for nearly circular domain.

A nonlocal diffusion problem on manifolds

In this paper we study a nonlocal diffusion problem on a manifold. These kind of equations can model diffusions when there are long range effects and have been widely studied in Euclidean space. We first prove existence and uniqueness of solutions and a comparison principle. Then, for a convenient rescaling we prove that the operator under consideration converges to a multiple of the usual Heat-Beltrami operator on the manifold. Next, we look at the long time behavior on compact manifolds by studying the spectral properties of the operator. Finally, for the model case of hyperbolic space we study the long time asymptotics and find a different and interesting behavior.

On the stability of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations with Robin boundary conditions on Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and nonexistence of stationary stable nonconstant solutions, i.e. patterns, of semilinear parabolic problems in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds satisfying Robin boundary conditions. These problems arise in several models in applications, in particular in Mathematical Biology. We point out the role both of the nonlinearity and of geometric objects such as the Ricci curvature of the manifold, the second fundamental form of the boundary of the domain and its mean curvature. Special attention is devoted to surfaces of revolution and to spherically symmetric manifolds, where we prove refined results.

Second variation of domain functionals and applications to problems with Robin boundary conditions

In this paper the first and second domain variation for functionals related to elliptic boundary and eigenvalue problems with Robin boundary conditions is computed. Minimality and maximality properties of the ball among nearly circular domains of given volume are derived. The discussion leads to the investigation of the eigenvalues of a Steklov eigenvalue problem. As a byproduct a general characterization of the optimal shapes is obtained.

Domain perturbations for elliptic problems with Robin boundary conditions of opposite sign

We consider the energy of the torsion problem with Robin boundary conditions in the case where the solution is not a minimizer. Its dependence on the volume of the domain and the surface area of the boundary is discussed. In contrast to the case of positive elasticity constants, the ball does not provide a minimum. For nearly spherical domains and elasticity constants close to zero the energy is largest for the ball. This result is true for general domains in the plane under an additional condition on the first non-trivial Steklov eigenvalue. For more general elasticity constants the situation is more involved and it is strongly related to the particular domain perturbation. The methods used in this paper are the series representation of the solution in terms of Steklov eigenfunctions, the first and second shape derivatives and an isoperimetric inequality of Payne and Weinberger \cite{PaWe61} for the torsional rigidity.

Sublinear elliptic problems with a Hardy potential

In this paper we study the positive solutions of sub linear elliptic equations with a Hardy potential which is singular at the boundary. By means of ODE techniques a fairly complete picture of the class of radial solutions is given. Local solutions with a prescribed growth at the boundary are constructed by means of contraction operators. Some of those radial solutions are then used to construct ordered upper and lower solutions in general domains. By standard iteration arguments the existence of positive solutions is proved. An important tool is the Hardy constant.

Large solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential and exponential nonlinearity

On a bounded smooth domain we study solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with an exponential nonlinearity and a Hardy potential depending on the distance to the boundary of the domain. We derive global a priori bounds of the Keller-Osserman type. Using a Phragmen-Lindelof alternative for generalized sub and super-harmonic functions we discuss existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of so-called large solutions, i.e., solutions which tend to infinity at the boundary. The approach develops the one used by the same authors for a problem with a power nonlinearity instead of the exponential nonlinearity.

"Boundary blowup" type sub-solutions to semilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential

Semilinear elliptic equations which give rise to solutions blowing up at the boundary are perturbed by a Hardy potential. The size of this potential effects the existence of a certain type of solutions (large solutions): if the potential is too small, then no large solution exists. The presence of the Hardy potential requires a new definition of large solutions, following the pattern of the associated linear problem. Nonexistence and existence results for different types of solutions will be given. Our considerations are based on a Phragmen-Lindelof type theorem which enables us to classify the solutions and sub-solutions according to their behavior near the boundary. Nonexistence follows from this principle together with the Keller-Osserman upper bound. The existence proofs rely on sub- and super-solution techniques and on estimates for the Hardy constant derived in Marcus, Mizel and Pinchover.
