The Machine's Internal Clock: Do LLMs Share Human Temporal Illusions?

Human perception of time is subjective. Well-documented temporal illusions show that the brain relies on context and relational cues for judging duration instead of tracking elapsed time directly. Prior studies established these effects with visual and auditory stimuli. Existing LLM evaluations of temporal perception focus on estimating event durations or multi-step temporal reasoning. In this work, we investigate whether written narratives alone can evoke human temporal illusions, using a new benchmark of 6,684 narrative pairs spanning five illusions. We find that human readers (60 participants) prefer expected scenarios in only two of the five illusions, those where the manipulation is directly visible in text rather than requiring readers to internally simulate duration. We evaluate 14 LLMs on the same benchmark. Surprisingly, we find that models pick the literature-predicted scenario across four of the five illusions, diverging from human behavior. Reasoning traces show that ~70% of responses explicitly evoke psychology research, suggesting that this alignment is consistent with retrieval of published findings rather than human-like temporal biases.

Evaluating Bias in Phoneme-Based Automatic Speech Recognition Systems: An Analysis of IPA Transcription Models

The popularization of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems has increased exploration of the demographic biases related to race, age, gender, and accent, often formed from imbalanced training data. Most of these studies focused on standard grapheme-based ASR systems with comparatively little emphasis on phoneme-based systems, such as models that produce International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) representations. As ASR systems shift toward multilingual support and low-resource language modeling, IPA-based layers serve as a critical, language-agnostic foundation. In this study, we evaluate the performance of two state-of-the-art open-source ASR systems, WhisperIPA and ZIPA, that generate IPA transcriptions across diverse accents and language sources. Our evaluation includes existing multilingual speech corpora and demographically annotated English-language corpora. We measure model performance by comparing model-generated IPA transcriptions against grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) systems using both standard phoneme error rate (PER) and a proposed Soft PER metric that tolerates linguistically similar phoneme substitutions. Our analysis examines how performance varies across languages and demographic groups such as gender, accent, ethnicity, and age, revealing persistent disparities even after accounting for acceptable phonemic variation. These findings provide insight into potential sources of bias and inform the development of more inclusive and linguistically robust phoneme-based ASR systems. Our code and data will be made publicly available to the community.

The Empirically Grounded Adaptive Virtual Patient for Psychotherapy Training: Disclosure That Responds to Therapist Micro-Skills

Simulated patients offer a scalable way to train psychotherapy micro-skills such as empathic responding and exploratory probing, but current systems either follow fixed scripts or rely on LLMs that drift unpredictably over long sessions. We present the Adaptive Virtual Patient (AVP), which adapts its disclosure behavior -- from guarded, through moderate openness, to full disclosure -- in response to trainee skill. The AVP is grounded in a structural equation model fit to nearly 2{,}000 hours of real-world psychotherapy transcripts, which quantifies how therapist empathy and exploration shift a patient's openness over time. An LLM generates the AVP's utterances conditioned on a disclosure level that the dynamics module updates each turn. In an evaluation with 20 clinicians and trainees over 80 sessions (1{,}033 turns), the AVP's disclosure rises in response to therapist empathy and exploration, while a prompt-only baseline stays flat; ablations confirm that the empirically motivated parameterization outperforms alternatives, with exploration carrying most of the adaptive signal.

Simulating Couple Conflict: Designing A Multi-Agent System for Therapy Training and Practice

Couples therapy requires managing complex, evolving emotional dynamics between partners, but traditional training methods for therapists, like role-play, lack realism, consistency, and control. We present a multi-modal simulation that models therapy as a controlled, multi-agent dynamical system with structured interaction stages. Therapists practice with a pair of client-agents who go through six evolving stages that respond to therapist actions. This simulation enables practice with demand-withdraw conflict patterns in a closed-loop environment. The simulation uses a sense-plan-act architecture: it detects the therapist's input, updates agents' interaction states based on psychotherapy theory and transcript analysis, and generates realistic verbal and emotional responses. In an experiment with 21 licensed U.S. therapists, participants more accurately identified state transitions and rated the system as more realistic and responsive than a prompt-based baseline, demonstrating the value of stateful, interpretable simulation for therapist training.
