Extension of a theorem of Wschebor to free and matrix Brownian motions

In 1992, M. Wschebor proved a theorem on the convergence of small increments of the Brownian motion. Since then, it has been extended to various processes. We prove a version of this theorem for the Hermitian Brownian motion and the free Brownian motion. Since these theorems deal with a convergence to a deterministic limit, we prove also the convergence in distribution of the corresponding fluctuations.

Non universality of fluctuations of outlier eigenvectors for block diagonal deformations of Wigner matrices

In this paper, we investigate the fluctuations of a unit eigenvector associated to an outlier in the spectrum of a spiked $N\times N$ complex Deformed Wigner matrix $M_N$: $M_N =W_N/\sqrt{N} + A_N$ where $W_N$ is an $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrix whose entries have a law $μ$ satisfying a Poincaré inequality and the matrix $A_N$ is a block diagonal matrix, with an eigenvalue $θ$ of multiplicity one, generating an outlier in the spectrum of $M_N$. We prove that the fluctuations of the norm of the projection of a unit eigenvector corresponding to the outlier of $M_N$ onto a unit eigenvector corresponding to $θ$ are not universal.

Convergence to Equilibrium in the Free Fokker-Planck Equation With a Double-Well Potential

We consider the one-dimensional free Fokker-Planck equation $\frac{\partial μ\_t}{\partial t} = \frac{\partial}{\partial x} \left[ μ\_t \left( \frac12 V' - Hμ\_t \right) \right]$, where $H$ denotes the Hilbert transform and $V$ is a particular double-well quartic potential, namely $V(x) = \frac14 x^4 + \frac{c}{2} x^2$, with $-2 \le c < 0$. We prove that the solution $(μ\_t)\_{t \ge 0}$ of this PDE converges to the equilibrium measure $μ\_V$ as $t$ goes to infinity, which provides a first result of convergence in a non-convex setting. The proof involves free probability and complex analysis techniques.

Large deviations for near-extreme eigenvalues in the beta-ensembles

For beta ensembles with convex poynomial potentials, we prove a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral distribution seen from the rightmost particle. This modified spectral distribution was introduced by Perret and Schehr (J. Stat. Phys. 2014) to study the crowding near the maximal eigenvalue, in the case of the GUE. We prove also convergence of fluctuations.

Bridges and random truncations of random matrices

We continue to study the squared Frobenius norm of a submatrix of a $n \times n$ random unitary matrix. When the choice of the submatrix is deterministic and its size is $[ns] \times [nt]$, we proved in a previous paper that, after centering and without any rescaling, the two-parameter process converges in distribution to a bivariate Brownian bridge. Here, we consider Bernoulli independent choices of rows and columns with respective parameters $s$ and $t$. We prove by subordination that after centering and rescaling by $n^{-1/2}$, the process converges to another Gaussian process.

Random truncations of Haar distributed matrices and bridges

Let $U$ be a Haar distributed matrix in $\mathbb U(n)$ or $\mathbb O (n)$. In a previous paper, we proved that after centering, the two-parameter process \[T^{(n)} (s,t) = \sum_{i \leq \lfloor ns \rfloor, j \leq \lfloor nt\rfloor} |U_{ij}|^2\] converges in distribution to the bivariate tied-down Brownian bridge. In the present paper, we replace the deterministic truncation of $U$ by a random one, where each row (resp. column) is chosen with probability $s$ (resp. $t$) independently. We prove that the corresponding two-parameter process, after centering and normalization by $n^{-1/2}$ converges to a Gaussian process. On the way we meet other interesting convergences.

Truncations of Haar distributed matrices, traces and bivariate Brownian bridges

Let U be a Haar distributed unitary matrix in U(n)or O(n). We show that after centering the double index process $$ W^{(n)} (s,t) = \sum_{i \leq \lfloor ns \rfloor, j \leq \lfloor nt\rfloor} |U_{ij}|^2 $$ converges in distribution to the bivariate tied-down Brownian bridge. The proof relies on the notion of second order freeness.

Free convolution with a semi-circular distribution and eigenvalues of spiked deformations of Wigner matrices

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of spiked perturbations of Wigner matrices when the dimension goes to infinity. The entries of the Hermitian Wigner matrix have a distribution which is symmetric and satisfies a Poincaré inequality. The perturbation matrix is a deterministic Hermitian matrix whose spectral measure converges to some probability measure with compact support. We assume that this perturbation matrix has a fixed number of fixed eigenvalues (spikes) outside the support of its limiting spectral measure whereas the distance between the other eigenvalues and this support uniformly goes to zero as the dimension goes to infinity. We establish that only a particular subset of the spikes will generate some eigenvalues of the deformed model which will converge to some limiting points outside the support of the limiting spectral measure. This phenomenon can be fully described in terms of free probability involving the subordination function related to the additive free convolution of the limiting spectral measure of the perturbation matrix by a semi-circular distribution. Note that up to now only finite rank perturbations had been considered (even in the deformed GUE case).

Central limit theorems for eigenvalues of deformations of Wigner matrices

In this paper, we explain the dependance of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of a Deformed Wigner model with respect to the eigenvectors of the perturbation matrix. We exhibit quite general situations that will give rise to universality or non universality of the fluctuations.

The largest eigenvalues of finite rank deformation of large Wigner matrices: convergence and nonuniversality of the fluctuations

In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic spectrum of complex or real Deformed Wigner matrices $(M_N)_N$ defined by $M_N=W_N/\sqrt{N}+A_N$ where $W_N$ is an $N\times N$ Hermitian (resp., symmetric) Wigner matrix whose entries have a symmetric law satisfying a Poincaré inequality. The matrix $A_N$ is Hermitian (resp., symmetric) and deterministic with all but finitely many eigenvalues equal to zero. We first show that, as soon as the first largest or last smallest eigenvalues of $A_N$ are sufficiently far from zero, the corresponding eigenvalues of $M_N$ almost surely exit the limiting semicircle compact support as the size $N$ becomes large. The corresponding limits are universal in the sense that they only involve the variance of the entries of $W_N$. On the other hand, when $A_N$ is diagonal with a sole simple nonnull eigenvalue large enough, we prove that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue are not universal and vary with the particular distribution of the entries of $W_N$.

Further examples of explicit Krein representations of certain subordinators

In a previous paper, we have shown that the gamma subordinators may be represented as inverse local times of certain diffusions. In the present paper, we give such representations for other subordinators whose Lévy densities are of the form $ \frac{\mathcal{C}}{(\sinh(y))^γ}$, $0 < γ< 2$, and the more general family obtained from those by exponential tilting.

Strong asymptotic freeness for Wigner and Wishart matrices

We prove that any non commutative polynomial of r independent copies of Wigner matrices converges a.s. towards the polynomial of r free semicircular variables in operator norm. This result extends a previous work of Haagerup and Thorbjornsen where GUE matrices are considered, as well as the classical asymptotic freeness for Wigner matrices (i.e. convergence of the moments) proved by Dykema. We also study the Wishart case.

Large deviations for Wishart processes

Let $X^{(δ)}$ be a Wishart process of dimension $δ$, with values in the set of positive matrices of size $m$. We are interested in the large deviations for a family of matrix-valued processes $\{δ^{-1} X_t^{(δ)}, t \leq 1 \}$ as $δ$ tends to infinity. The process $X^{(δ)}$ is a solution of a stochastic differential equation with a degenerate diffusion coefficient. Our approach is based upon the introduction of exponential martingales. We give some applications to large deviations for functionals of the Wishart processes, for example the set of eigenvalues.
