Beyond Effectiveness: A Multi-Criteria Framework for Comparing Practical Socio-Technical Interventions

Designers and policymakers in sociotechnical domains like content moderation, privacy interfaces, recommender systems and beyond, must choose among a growing menu of proposed interventions, but typically lack a principled basis for comparing them. Prior work tends to evaluate interventions individually and mostly along the effectiveness criteria, while implementation constraints such as cost, effort and feasibility are often considered separately. We present a multi-criteria framework for evaluating sociotechnical interventions. This framework is instantiated through the case of misinformation, a domain of intense focus for proposed countermeasures. We survey $N=39$ researchers on 40 operationalized interventions across five evaluative criteria: political feasibility, effectiveness, user acceptance, cost, and implementation effort. We find that the interventions that experts judge to be the most effective are not always the most acceptable to the public or the most feasible to implement. We also discuss how this tension has implications for the design of sociotechnical interventions beyond misinformation, and offer a decision framework for practitioners navigating the trade-offs of sociotechnical interventions.

User-Reported Misinformation Exposure Across Social Media Platforms

In this study, we surveyed users for their perception of misinformation exposure across social media platforms. Such perceived exposure is important because individuals' beliefs about how often they encounter false information can shape their trust in institutions, platforms, and even their friends. In a survey of 1,010 United States residents, we found that perceived exposure to misinformation varies substantially across platforms and is only moderately correlated with the frequency of platform use. A much larger percentage of participants also reported being exposed to misinformation from the public feed than from known contacts. Based on these results, we propose governance strategies across three categories of platform types: discovery, interpersonal, and discourse. This work offers insight into users' perceptions of social media misinformation and a corresponding research agenda for governance.

A deep learning framework for glomeruli segmentation with boundary attention

Accurate detection and segmentation of glomeruli in kidney tissue are essential for diagnostic applications. Traditional deep learning methods primarily rely on semantic segmentation, which often fails to precisely delineate adjacent glomeruli. To address this challenge, we propose a novel glomerulus detection and segmentation model that emphasises boundary separation. Leveraging pathology foundation models, the proposed U-Net-based architecture incorporates a specialised attention decoder designed to highlight critical regions and improve instancelevel segmentation. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that our approach surpasses state-of-the-art methods in both Dice score and Intersection over Union, indicating superior performance in glomerular delineation.

CORE -- A Cell-Level Coarse-to-Fine Image Registration Engine for Multi-stain Image Alignment

Accurate and efficient registration of whole slide images (WSIs) is essential for high-resolution, nuclei-level analysis in multi-stained tissue slides. We propose a novel coarse-to-fine framework CORE for accurate nuclei-level registration across diverse multimodal whole-slide image (WSI) datasets. The coarse registration stage leverages prompt-based tissue mask extraction to effectively filter out artefacts and non-tissue regions, followed by global alignment using tissue morphology and accelerated dense feature matching with a pre-trained feature extractor. From the coarsely aligned slides, nuclei centroids are detected and subjected to fine-grained rigid registration using a custom, shape-aware point-set registration model. Finally, non-rigid alignment at the cellular level is achieved by estimating a non-linear displacement field using Coherent Point Drift (CPD). Our approach benefits from automatically generated nuclei that enhance the accuracy of deformable registration and ensure precise nuclei-level correspondence across modalities. The proposed model is evaluated on three publicly available WSI registration datasets, and two private datasets. We show that CORE outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in terms of generalisability, precision, and robustness in bright-field and immunofluorescence microscopy WSIs

Public support for misinformation interventions depends on perceived fairness, effectiveness, and intrusiveness

The proliferation of misinformation on social media has concerning possible consequences, such as the degradation of democratic norms. While recent research on countering misinformation has largely focused on analyzing the effectiveness of interventions, the factors associated with public support for these interventions have received little attention. We asked 1,010 American social media users to rate their support for and perceptions of ten misinformation interventions implemented by the government or social media companies. Our results indicate that the perceived fairness of the intervention is the most important factor associated with support, followed by the perceived effectiveness of that intervention and then the intrusiveness. Interventions that supported user agency and transparency, such as labeling content or fact-checking ads, were more popular than those that involved moderating or removing content or accounts. We found some demographic differences in support levels, with Democrats and women supporting interventions more and rating them as more fair, more effective, and less intrusive than Republicans and men do, respectively. It is critical to understand which interventions are supported and how they are perceived, as public opinion can play a key role in the rollout and effectiveness of policies.
