Geometry of polarised varieties

In this paper we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $ε$-lc singularities for $ε>0$, and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_X$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,ε$. This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessarily nef) on a klt Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$. It also gives new proofs of some known results, for example, if $X$ is an $ε$-lc Fano variety of dimension $d$ then taking $N=-K_X$ we recover birationality of $|-mK_X|$ for bounded $m$. We prove similar birational boundedness results for nef and big Weil divisors $N$ on projective klt varieties $X$ when both $K_X$ and $N-K_X$ are pseudo-effective (here $X$ is not assumed $ε$-lc). Using the above, we show boundedness of polarised varieties under some natural conditions. We extend these to boundedness of semi-log canonical Calabi-Yau pairs polarised by effective ample Weil divisors not containing lc centres. We will briefly discuss applications to existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of such polarised Calabi-Yau pairs.

Boundedness of Fano type fibrations

In this paper, we prove various results on boundedness and singularities of Fano fibrations and of Fano type fibrations. A Fano fibration is a projective morphism $X\to Z$ of algebraic varieties with connected fibres such that $X$ is Fano over $Z$, that is, $X$ has "good" singularities and $-K_X$ is ample over $Z$. A Fano type fibration is similarly defined where $X$ is assumed to be close to being Fano over $Z$. This class includes many central ingredients of birational geometry such as Fano varieties, Mori fibre spaces, flipping and divisorial contractions, crepant models, germs of singularities, etc. We develop the theory in the more general framework of log Calabi-Yau fibrations.

On connectedness of non-klt loci of singularities of pairs

We study the non-klt locus of singularities of pairs. We show that given a pair $(X,B)$ and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ with connected fibres such that $-(K_X+B)$ is nef over $Z$, the non-klt locus of $(X,B)$ has at most two connected components near each fibre of $X\to Z$. This was conjectured by Hacon and Han. In a different direction we answer a question of Mark Gross on connectedness of the non-klt loci of certain pairs. This is motivated by constructions in Mirror Symmetry.

Bounding non-rationality of divisors on 3-fold Fano fibrations

In this paper we investigate non-rationality of divisors on 3-fold log Fano fibrations $(X,B)\to Z$ under mild conditions. We show that if $D$ is a component of $B$ with coefficient $\ge t>0$ which is contracted to a point on $Z$, then $D$ is birational to $\mathbb{P}^1\times C$ where $C$ is a smooth projective curve with gonality bounded depending only on $t$. Moreover, if $t>\frac{1}{2}$, then genus of $C$ is bounded depending only on $t$.

Variations of generalised pairs

In this paper we investigate various properties of generalised pairs in families, especially boundedness of several kinds. We show that many statements for usual pairs do not hold for generalised pairs. In particular, we construct an unexpected counter-example to boundedness of generalised lc models with fixed appropriate invariants. We also show that the DCC of Iitaka volumes and existence of nef reduction maps fail in families of generalised pairs. In a positive direction we show boundedness of bases of log Calabi-Yau fibrations with their induced generalised pair structure under natural assumptions. Roughly speaking we prove this boundedness for fibrations whose general fibres belong to a bounded family and whose Iitaka volume is fixed.

Singularities of linear systems and boundedness of Fano varieties

We study log canonical thresholds (also called global log canonical threshold or $α$-invariant) of $\mathbb{R}$-linear systems. We prove existence of positive lower bounds in different settings, in particular, proving a conjecture of Ambro. We then show that the Borisov-Alexeev-Borisov conjecture holds, that is, given a natural number $d$ and a positive real number $ε$, the set of Fano varieties of dimension $d$ with $ε$-log canonical singularities forms a bounded family. This implies that birational automorphism groups of rationally connected varieties are Jordan which in particular answers a question of Serre. Next we show that if the log canonical threshold of the anti-canonical system of a Fano variety is at most one, then it is computed by some divisor, answering a question of Tian in this case.

Singularities on toric fibrations

In this paper we investigate singularities on toric fibrations. In this context we study a conjecture of Shokurov (a special case of which is due to M$^\rm{c}$Kernan) which roughly says that if $(X,B)\to Z$ is an $ε$-lc Fano type log Calabi-Yau fibration, then the singularities of the log base $(Z,B_Z+M_Z)$ are bounded in terms of $ε$ and $\dim X$ where $B_Z,M_Z$ are the discriminant and moduli divisors of the canonical bundle formula. A corollary of our main result says that if $X\to Z$ is a toric Fano fibration with $X$ being $ε$-lc, then the multiplicities of the fibres over codimension one points are bounded depending only on $ε$ and $\dim X$.

Generalised pairs in birational geometry

In this note we introduce generalised pairs from the perspective of the evolution of the notion of space in birational algebraic geometry. We describe some applications of generalised pairs in recent years and then mention a few open problems.

Anti-pluricanonical systems on Fano varieties

In this paper, we study the linear systems $|-mK_X|$ on Fano varieties $X$ with klt singularities. In a given dimension $d$, we prove $|-mK_X|$ is non-empty and contains an element with "good singularities" for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$; if in addition $X$ is $ε$-lc for some $ε>0$, then we show that we can choose $m$ depending only on $d$ and $ε$ so that $|-mK_X|$ defines a birational map. Further, we prove Shokurov's conjecture on boundedness of complements, and show that certain classes of Fano varieties form bounded families.

Log Calabi-Yau fibrations

In this paper we study boundedness properties and singularities of log Calabi-Yau fibrations, particularly those admitting Fano type structures. A log Calabi-Yau fibration roughly consists of a pair $(X,B)$ with good singularities and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ such that $K_X+B$ is numerically trivial over $Z$. This class includes many central ingredients of birational geometry such as Calabi-Yau and Fano varieties and also fibre spaces of such varieties, flipping and divisorial contractions, crepant models, germs of singularities, etc.

Effectivity of Iitaka fibrations and pluricanonical systems of polarized pairs

For every smooth complex projective variety $W$ of dimension $d$ and nonnegative Kodaira dimension, we show the existence of a universal constant $m$ depending only on $d$ and two natural invariants of the very general fibres of an Iitaka fibration of $W$ such that the pluricanonical system $|mK_W|$ defines an Iitaka fibration. This is a consequence of a more general result on polarized adjoint divisors. In order to prove these results we develop a generalized theory of pairs, singularities, log canonical thresholds, adjunction, etc.

Iitaka's $C_{n,m}$ conjecture for 3-folds over finite fields

We prove Iitaka's $C_{n,m}$ conjecture for $3$-folds over the algebraic closure of finite fields. Along the way we prove some results on the birational geometry of log surfaces over nonclosed fields and apply these to existence of relative good minimal models of $3$-folds.

Existence of flips and minimal models for 3-folds in char p

We will prove the following results for $3$-fold pairs $(X,B)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>5$: log flips exist for $\Q$-factorial dlt pairs $(X,B)$; log minimal models exist for projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ with pseudo-effective $K_X+B$; the log canonical ring $R(K_X+B)$ is finitely generated for projective klt pairs $(X,B)$ when $K_X+B$ is a big $\Q$-divisor; semi-ampleness holds for a nef and big $\Q$-divisor $D$ if $D-(K_X+B)$ is nef and big and $(X,B)$ is projective klt; $\Q$-factorial dlt models exist for lc pairs $(X,B)$; terminal models exist for klt pairs $(X,B)$; ACC holds for lc thresholds; etc.

The augmented base locus of real divisors over arbitrary fields

We show that the augmented base locus coincides with the exceptional locus (i.e. null locus) for any nef $\mathbb{R}$-Cartier divisor on any scheme projective over a field (of any characteristic). Next we prove a semi-ampleness criterion in terms of the augmented base locus generalizing a result of Keel. We also study nef divisors with positive top intersection number, and discuss some problems related to augmented base loci of log divisors.
