UrbanAlign: Post-hoc Semantic Calibration for VLM-Human Preference Alignment

Vision-language models (VLMs) can describe urban scenes in rich detail, yet consistently fail to produce reliable human preference labels in domain-specific tasks such as safety assessment and aesthetic evaluation. The standard fix, fine-tuning or RLHF, requires large-scale annotations and model retraining. We ask a different question: can a frozen VLM be aligned with human preferences without modifying any weights? Our key insight is that VLMs are strong concept extractors but poor decision calibrators. We propose a three-stage post-hoc pipeline that exploits this asymmetry: (i) interpretable evaluation dimensions are automatically mined from consensus exemplars; (ii) an Observer-Debater-Judge chain extracts robust concept scores from the frozen VLM; and (iii) locally-weighted ridge regression on a hybrid manifold calibrates these scores to human ratings. Applied as UrbanAlign on Place Pulse 2.0, the framework reaches 72.2% accuracy (kappa=0.45) across six perception categories, outperforming all baselines by +11.0 pp and zero-shot VLM by +15.5 pp, with full interpretability and zero weight modification.

Towards Interpretable Geo-localization: a Concept-Aware Global Image-GPS Alignment Framework

Worldwide geo-localization involves determining the exact geographic location of images captured globally, typically guided by geographic cues such as climate, landmarks, and architectural styles. Despite advancements in geo-localization models like GeoCLIP, which leverages images and location alignment via contrastive learning for accurate predictions, the interpretability of these models remains insufficiently explored. Current concept-based interpretability methods fail to align effectively with Geo-alignment image-location embedding objectives, resulting in suboptimal interpretability and performance. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework integrating global geo-localization with concept bottlenecks. Our method inserts a Concept-Aware Alignment Module that jointly projects image and location embeddings onto a shared bank of geographic concepts (e.g., tropical climate, mountain, cathedral) and minimizes a concept-level loss, enhancing alignment in a concept-specific subspace and enabling robust interpretability. To our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce interpretability into geo-localization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach surpasses GeoCLIP in geo-localization accuracy and boosts performance across diverse geospatial prediction tasks, revealing richer semantic insights into geographic decision-making processes.

Near-real-time monitoring of global ocean carbon sink

Mitigation of climate change will highly rely on a carbon emission trajectory that achieves carbon neutrality by the 2050s. The ocean plays a critical role in modulating climate change by sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere. Relying on the multidisciplinary cutting-edge methodologies and technologies, the near-real-time monitoring of global ocean carbon sinks from January 2022 to July 2023 aims to provide the world's latest assessment of monthly and gridded global ocean carbon sinks based on machine learning and other data science technologies. The project will help us find a robust route to deal with climate change, which will significantly promote the ocean carbon sinks research and will be of great interest for policy makers, researchers, and the public. This research aims to build up an integrated machine learning framework and methodology for assessing global ocean carbon neutral process; development of near-real-time dataset; development of visualization platform; research papers published in international prestigious journals; an executive report openly accessible to policy makers and the public.
