The asymptotic structure of electromagnetism in higher spacetime dimensions

We investigate the asymptotic structure of electromagnetism in Minkowski space in even and odd spacetime dimensions $\geq 4$. We focus on $d>4$ since the case $d=4$ has been studied previously at length. We first consider spatial infinity where we provide explicit boundary conditions that admit the known physical solutions and make the formalism well defined (finite symplectic structure and charges). Contrary to the situation found in $d=4$ dimensions, there is no need to impose parity conditions under the antipodal map on the leading order of the fields when $d>4$. There is, however, the same need to modify the standard bulk symplectic form by a boundary term at infinity involving a surface degree of freedom. This step makes the Lorentz boosts act canonically. Because of the absence of parity conditions, the theory is found to be invariant under two independent algebras of angle-dependent $u(1)$ transformations ($d>4$). We then integrate the equations of motion in order to find the behaviour of the fields near null infinity. We exhibit the radiative and Coulomb branches, characterized by different decays and parities. The analysis yields generalized matching conditions between the past of $\mathscr{I}^+$ and the future of $\mathscr{I} ^-$.

Asymptotic structure of a massless scalar field and its dual two-form field at spatial infinity

Relativistic field theories with a power law decay in $r^{-k}$ at spatial infinity generically possess an infinite number of conserved quantities because of Lorentz invariance. Most of these are not related in any obvious way to symmetry transformations of which they would be the Noether charges. We discuss the issue in the case of a massless scalar field. By going to the dual formulation in terms of a $2$-form (as was done recently in a null infinity analysis), we relate some of the scalar charges to symmetry transformations acting on the $2$-form and on surface degrees of freedom that must be added at spatial infinity. These new degrees of freedom are necessary to get a consistent relativistic description in the dual picture, since boosts would otherwise fail to be canonical transformations. We provide explicit boundary conditions on the $2$-form and its conjugate momentum, which involves parity conditions with a twist, as in the case of electromagnetism and gravity. The symmetry group at spatial infinity is composed of `improper gauge transformations'. It is abelian and infinite-dimensional. We also briefly discuss the realization of the asymptotic symmetries, characterized by a non trivial central extension and point out vacuum degeneracy.

Hamiltonian surface charges using external sources

In this work, we interpret part of the boundary conditions as external sources in order to solve the integrability problem present in the computation of surface charges associated to gauge symmetries in the hamiltonian formalism. We start by describing the hamiltonian structure of external symmetries preserving the action up to a transformation of the external sources of the theory. We then extend these results to the computation of surface charges for field theories with non-trivial boundary conditions.

Poisson Structure of the Boundary Gravitons in 3D Gravity with Negative $Λ$

We use the hamiltonian formalism to study the asymptotic structure of 3 dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We start by defining very general fall-off conditions for the canonical variables and study the implied poisson structure of the boundary gravitons. From the allowed differentiable gauge transformations, we can extract all the possible boundary conditions on the lagrange multipliers and the associated boundary hamiltonians. In the last section, we use this general framework to describe some of the previoussly known boundary conditions.

Canonical Structure of Field Theories with Boundaries and Applications to Gauge Theories

In this paper, we present a review of the canonical structure of field theories defined on manifolds with time-like boundaries. The notion of differentiable generator is shown to be a requirement coming from the consistency of the symplectic structure. We show how this structure can be applied to classify the possible boundary conditions of a general gauge theory. We then review the definition and properties of surface charges. We show how the notion of differentiable generators allows the direct computation of the phase-space of boundary gauge degrees of freedom.

Aspects of duality in gravitational theories

This thesis is divided in two parts. The first part contains the study of some properties of the electromagnetic duality in 4 dimensions. An extended double potential formalism for linearized gravity is introduced which allows to write an action manifestly invariant under duality rotations in presence of both electric and magnetic external sources. It is also shown how, in the reduced phase-space, all higher spin gauge fields can be written as bi-hamiltonian systems. The role of the second hamiltonian is played by the electromagnetic duality generator. The second part is devoted to the study of asymptotic symmetries and their applications to holography. After a review of symmetries and classical solutions involved in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence, we apply a similar analysis to asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 3 and 4 dimensions. In particular, it is argued that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 4 dimensions should be taken as the semi-direct sum of supertranslations with infinitesimal local conformal transformations and not, as usually done, with the Lorentz algebra. The first applications are studied: an exact representation by bulk vector fields of the asymptotic symmetry algebra through the introduction of a modified Lie bracket, the derivation of how this symmetry algebra is realized on solution space and the construction of the associated centrally extended surface charge algebra.

Enhanced asymptotic symmetry algebra of AdS3

A generalization of the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions is introduced for pure gravity with negative cosmological constant in 3 dimensions. This leads to new degrees of freedom and to an enhancement of the symmetry algebra. Up to the zero modes, it consists of two copies of the semi-direct product of a Virasoro algebra with a U(1) current algebra. The associated surface charge algebra now contains three non-zero central charges: the two usual Brown-Henneaux central charges and one new quantity.

BMS charge algebra

The surface charges associated with the symmetries of asymptotically flat four dimensional spacetimes at null infinity are constructed. They realize the symmetry algebra in general only up to a field-dependent central extension that satisfies a suitably generalized cocycle condition. This extension vanishes when using the globally well defined BMS algebra. For the Kerr black hole and the enlarged BMS algebra with both supertranslations and superrotations, some of the supertranslations charges diverge whereas there are no divergences for the superrotation charges. The central extension is proportional to the rotation parameter and involves divergent integrals on the sphere.

Aspects of the BMS/CFT correspondence

After a review of symmetries and classical solutions involved in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence, we apply a similar analysis to asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 3 and 4 dimensions. In the spirit of two dimensional conformal field theory, the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 4 dimensions is taken to be the semi-direct sum of supertranslations with infinitesimal local conformal transformations and not, as usually done, with the Lorentz algebra. As a first application, we derive how the symmetry algebra is realized on solution space. In particular, we work out the behavior of Bondi's news tensor, mass and angular momentum aspects under local conformal transformations.

Symmetries of asymptotically flat 4 dimensional spacetimes at null infinity revisited

It is argued that the symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in 4 dimensions should be taken as the semi-direct sum of supertranslations with infinitesimal local conformal transformations and not, as usually done, with the Lorentz algebra. As a consequence, two dimensional conformal field theory techniques will play as fundamental a role in this context of direct physical interest as they do in three dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity.

Duality and integrability: Electromagnetism, linearized gravity and massless higher spin gauge fields as bi-Hamiltonian systems

In the reduced phase space of electromagnetism, the generator of duality rotations in the usual Poisson bracket is shown to generate Maxwell's equations in a second, much simpler Poisson bracket. This gives rise to a hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian evolution equations in the standard way. The result can be extended to linearized Yang-Mills theory, linearized gravity and massless higher spin gauge fields.

Manifest spin 2 duality with electric and magnetic sources

We extend the formulation of spin 2 fields on Minkowski space which makes the action manifestly invariant under duality rotations to the case of interactions with external electric and magnetic sources by adding suitable potentials for the longitudinal and trace parts. In this framework, the string singularity of the linearized Taub-NUT solution is resolved into a Coulomb-like solution. Suitable surface charges to measure energy-momentum and angular momentum of both electric and magnetic type are constructed.
