Scalar Field as a Bose-Einstein Condensate?

We discuss the analogy between a classical scalar field with a self-interacting potential, in a curved spacetime described by a quasi--bounded state, and a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. In this context, we compare the Klein-Gordon equation with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Moreover, the introduction of a curved background spacetime endows, in a natural way, an equivalence to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an explicit confinement potential. The curvature also induces a position dependent self-interaction parameter. We exploit this analogy by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation, commonly used to describe the Bose-Einstein condensate, in order to analyze the quasi bound scalar field distribution surrounding a black hole.

Nonparametric reconstruction of the cosmic expansion with local regression smoothing and simulation extrapolation

In this work we present a nonparametric approach, which works on minimal assumptions, to reconstruct the cosmic expansion of the Universe. We propose to combine a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing method and a simulation-extrapolation method. The first one (Loess) is a nonparametric approach that allows to obtain smoothed curves with no prior knowledge of the functional relationship between variables nor of the cosmological quantities. The second one (Simex) takes into account the effect of measurement errors on a variable via a simulation process. For the reconstructions we use as raw data the Union2.1 Type Ia Supernovae compilation, as well as recent Hubble parameter measurements. This work aims to illustrate the approach, which turns out to be a self-sufficient technique in the sense we do not have to choose anything by hand. We examine the details of the method, among them the amount of observational data needed to perform the locally weighted fit which will define the robustness of our reconstruction. In view of our results, we believe that our proposal offers a promising alternative for reconstructing global trends of cosmological data when there is little intuition on the relationship between the variables and we also think it even presents good prospects to generate reliable mock data points where the original sample is poor.

BAO cosmography

Cosmography provides a model-independent way to map the expansion history of the Universe. In this paper we simulate a Euclid-like survey and explore cosmographic constraints from future Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) observations. We derive general expressions for the BAO transverse and radial modes and discuss the optimal order of the cosmographic expansion that provide reliable cosmological constraints. Through constraints on the deceleration and jerk parameters, we show that future BAO data have the potential to provide a model-independent check of the cosmic acceleration as well as a discrimination between the standard $Λ$CDM model and alternative mechanisms of cosmic acceleration.

Interacting closed string tachyon with modified Chaplygin gas and its stability

In this paper, we have considered closed string tachyon model with a constant dilaton field and interacted it with Chaplygin gas for evaluating cosmology parameters. The model has been studied in $26$-dimensional that its $22$-dimensional is related to compactification on an internal non-flat space and its other $4$-dimensions is related to FLRW metric. By taking the internal curvature as a negative constant, we obtained the closed string tachyon potential as a quartic equation. The tachyon field and the scale factor have been achieved as functional of time evolution and geometry of curved space where the behaviour of the scale factor describes an accelerated expansion of the universe. Next, we discussed the stability of our model by introducing a sound speed factor, which one must be, in our case, a positive function. By drawing sound speed against time evolution we investigated stability conditions for non-flat universe in its three stages: early, late and future time. As a result we shall see that in these cases remains an instability at early time and a stability point at late time.

The rise of a tensor instability in Eddington-inspired gravity

In this work an extension to Eddington's gravitational action is analyzed. We consider the tensor perturbations of a FLRW space-time in the Eddington regime in where the tensor mode is linearly unstable deep and the resulting modifications to Einstein regime are quite strong.

The Closed String Tachyon and its relationship with the evolution of the Universe

We present a cosmological landscape where the classical closed string tachyon field plays an important role in the framework of a critical bosonic compactification. Our cosmological solutions for a universe with constant curvature describes an finite inflationary stage which expands till a maximum value before undergoes a big crunch as the tachyon reaches the minimum of its potential.

A tensor instability in the Eddington inspired Born-Infeld Theory of Gravity

In this paper we consider an extension to Eddington's proposal for the gravitational action. We study tensor perturbations of a homogeneous and isotropic space-time in the Eddington regime, where modifications to Einstein gravity are strong. We find that the tensor mode is linearly unstable deep in the Eddington regime and discuss its cosmological implications.

Closed String Tachyon: Inflation and Cosmological Collapse

By compactifying a critical bosonic string theory on an internal non-flat space with a constant volume, we study the role played by the closed string tachyon in the cosmology of the effective four-dimensional space-time. The effective tachyon potential consists on a negative constant related to the internal curvature space and a polynomial with only quadratic and quartic terms of the tachyon field. Based on it, we present a solution for the tachyon field and the scale factor, which describes an accelerated universe which expands to a maximum value before collapsing. At early times, the closed string tachyon potential behaves as a cosmological constant driving the Universe to an expansion. The value of the cosmological constant is determined by the curvature of the internal space which also fixes the value of the vacuum energy. As time evolves, inflation is present in our models, and it finishes long before the collapsing. At late times, we show that the collapse of the Universe starts as soon as the tachyon field condensates. We also comment on the consistency of our solution at early times at which quantum aspects become important under the perspective of quantum cosmology. Finally we briefly mention the relation among the curvature of the internal space and the value of the energy vacuum in a non-constant internal volume scenario.

Tension between SN and BAO: current status and future forecasts

Using real and synthetic Type Ia SNe (SNeIa) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) data representing current observations forecasts, this paper investigates the tension between those probes in the dark energy equation of state (EoS) reconstruction considering the well known CPL model and Wang's low correlation reformulation. In particular, here we present simulations of BAO data from both the the radial and transverse directions. We also explore the influence of priors on Omega_m and Omega_b on the tension issue, by considering 1-sigma deviations in either one or both of them. Our results indicate that for some priors there is no tension between a single dataset (either SNeIa or BAO) and their combination (SNeIa+BAO). Our criterion to discern the existence of tension (sigma-distance) is also useful to establish which is the dataset with most constraining power; in this respect SNeIa and BAO data switch roles when current and future data are considered, as forecasts predict and spectacular quality improvement on BAO data. We also find that the results on the tension are blind to the way the CPL model is addressed: there is a perfect match between the original formulation and that by the low correlation optimized, but the errors on the parameters are much narrower in all cases of our exhaustive exploration, thus serving the purpose of stressing the convenience of this reparametrization.

Supersymmetric classical cosmology

In this work a supersymmetric cosmological model is analyzed in which we consider a general superfield action of a homogeneous scalar field supermultiplet interacting with the scale factor in a supersymmetric FRW model. There appear fermionic superpartners associated with both the scale factor and the scalar field, and classical equations of motion are obtained from the super-Wheeler-DeWitt equation through the usual WKB method. The resulting supersymmetric Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations contain extra radiation and stiff matter terms, and we study their solutions in flat space for different scalar field potentials. The solutions are compared to the standard case, in particular those corresponding to the exponential potential, and their implications for the dynamics of the early Universe are discussed in turn.

Unveiling the tachyon dynamics in the Carrollian limit

We briefly study the dynamics at classical level of the Carrollian limit, with vanishing speed of light and no possible propagation of signals, for a simply effective action in a flat space with a open string tachyon as scalar field. The canonical analysis of the theory indicates that the equation of motion is of Dirac type contrary to non-relativistic case where the equation is of Schrodinger type. The ultimate intention is to analize the latter case with electromagnetic fluxes finding that in this case the open string tachyon cannot be interpreted as time.
