X-ray emission in IllustrisTNG circum-cluster environments. II -- Possible origins of the soft X-ray excess emission

An excess of soft X-ray emission (0.2-1 keV) above the contribution from the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) has been detected in a number of galaxy clusters, including the Coma cluster. The physical origin of this emitting medium above hot ICM has not yet been determined, especially whether it be thermal or non-thermal. We aim to investigate which gas phase and gas structure more accurately reproduce the soft excess radiation from the cluster core to the outskirts, using simulations. By using the simulation TNG300, we predict the radial profile of thermodynamic properties and the Soft-X-ray surface brightness of 138 clusters within 5 $R_{200}$. Their X-ray emission is simulated for the hot ICM gas phase, the entire Warm-Hot medium, the diffuse and low-density Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). Inside clusters, the soft excess appears to be produced by substructures of the WARM gas phase which host dense warm clumps (i.e, the Warm Circum-Galactic Medium, WCGM), and in fact the inner soft excess is strongly correlated with substructure and WCGM mass fractions. Outside of the virial radius, the fraction of WHIM gas that is mostly inside filaments connected to clusters boosts the soft X-ray excess. The more diffuse the gas is, the higher the soft X-ray excess beyond the virial region. The thermal emission of WARM gas phase, in the form of WCGM clumps and WHIM diffuse filaments, reproduces well the soft excess emission that was observed up to the virial radius in Coma and in the inner regions of other massive clusters. Moreover, our analysis suggests that soft X-ray excess is a proxy of cluster dynamical state, with larger excess being observed in the most unrelaxed clusters.

Soft X-ray emission from warm gas in IllustrisTNG circum-cluster environments

Context. Whereas X-ray clusters are extensively used for cosmology, their idealistic modelling, through the hypotheses of spherical symmetry and hydrostatic equilibrium, are more and more being questioned. Along these lines, the soft X-ray emission detected in tens of clusters with ROSAT was found to be higher than what expected from the idealistic hot gas modelling, pointing to our incomplete understanding of these objects. Aims. Given that cluster environments are at the interface between the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM), warm circum-galactic medium (WCGM) and warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), we aim to explore the relative soft X-ray emission of different gas phases in circum-cluster environments. Method. By using the most massive halos in IllustrisTNG at z=0, we have predicted the hydrodynamical properties of the gas from cluster centers to their outskirts (5 R200), and modelled their X-ray radiation for various plasma phases. Results. First, we found that the radial profile of temperature, density, metallicity and clumpiness of the ICM are in good agreement with recent X-ray observations of clusters. Secondly, we have developed a method to predict the radial profile of soft X-ray emission in different bands, the column density of ions and the X-ray absorption lines (O VIII, O VII, Ne IX, and Ne IX) of warm-hot gas inside and around clusters. Conclusion. The warm gas (in the form of both WCGM and WHIM gas) is a strong emitter in soft X-ray bands, and is qualitatively consistent with the observational measurements. Our results suggest that the cluster soft excess is induced by the thermal emission of warm gas in the circum-cluster environments.

On the projected mass distribution around galaxy clusters : a Lagrangian theory of harmonic power spectra

Gravitational lensing allows to quantify the angular distribution of the convergence field around clusters of galaxies to constrain their connectivity to the cosmic web. We describe in this paper the corresponding theory in Lagrangian space where analytical results can be obtained by identifying clusters to peaks in the initial field. We derive the three-point Gaussian statistics of a two-dimensional field and its first and second derivatives. The formalism allows us to study the statistics of the field in a shell around a central peak, in particular its multipolar decomposition. The peak condition is shown to significantly remove power from the dipolar contribution and to modify the monopole and quadrupole. As expected, higher order multipoles are not significantly modified by the constraint. Analytical predictions are successfully checked against measurements in Gaussian random fields. The effect of substructures and radial weighting is shown to be small and does not change the qualitative picture. The non-linear evolution is shown to induce a non-linear bias of all multipoles proportional to the cluster mass.We predict the Gaussian and weakly non-Gaussian statistics of multipolar moments of a two-dimensional field around a peak as a proxy for the azimuthal distribution of the convergence field around a cluster of galaxies. A quantitative estimate of this multipolar decomposition of the convergence field around clusters in numerical simulations of structure formation and in observations will be presented in two forthcoming papers.
